Lloyd Cushenberry handed Joe Burrow the ball for every LSU record the star quarterback set in his Tigers career. On Friday Cushenberry was the one making a bit of history. The Denver Broncos selected Cushenberry in the third round of the NFL draft at No. 83 overall. With the pick he became the ninth Tigers player taken in the 2020 draft, tying the program record for any draft. They'd need just three more picks over the final four rounds of the draft to tie the SEC record of 12 set by Alabama in 2018. Cu shenberry was the fourth LSU player picked on Friday. Safety Grant Delpit landed at No. 44 overall in the second round, cornerback Kristian Fulton went in the third round at No. 61 overall, followed shortly by former LSU guard Damien Lewis at No. 69 over all. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Lloyd Cushenberry III has never been a guy who chased stars. The fact that he became one in his own right while helping LSU win a national championship in January is, in his own words, "a blessing." Up next for Cushenberry is the NFL draft that begins Th ursday. It is the chance of a lifetime and the second-team All-America center is again betting on himself by leaving a year of college eligibility behind. "What it came down to was this - I felt like everything I wanted to accomplish at LSU I did. I grad uated, I helped win a national championship and became a leader," Cushenberry said. "I felt like I owed it to myself to come on this (NFL) level and try to make a name for myself."The former Dutchtown High standout has heard from naysayers many ti mes before. Cushenberry never offers lip service in return - he sets out to prove them wrong. When he received the NFL draft grade of "return to college" not long after LSU ousted Clemson in the title game, it was a challenge, not a deterrent. The 6-foot -3, 312-pound Cushenberry has been overlooked and underestimated often. But he has always made the most of every opportunity along the way. There were doubts before Cushenberry took over as LSU's starting center in 2018 and started 28 straight games. Cri tics thought he was undersized. Being the first LSU lineman chosen for LSU's No. 18 jersey honor cemented his status as a team leader prior to the 2019 season. Lloyd Cushenberry's want-to level was displayed before he stepped on LSU's campus. An offensive tackle in high school, he was recruited to play guard or center. Once he signed with the Tigers in February 2016, the work began. "I found some videos on YouT ube and basically taught myself to snap," Cushenberry said at the scouting combine. "And then once I got to campus, I actually took one of the footballs from the equipment room and I would just snap to my roommate. I got the rhythm." Cushenberry never lo st the rhythm, finishing his LSU career with 28 consecutive starts at center (25-3 record) and a national championship.Cushenberry declared for the draft a year early and is being mentioned with Temple's Matt Hennessy, Michigan's Cesar Ruiz and Wa shington's Nick Harris as the top available centers. The Broncos need a center after allowing Connor McGovern to sign with the New York Jets. The Broncos have three third-round picks, which could be the range for Cushenberry. If he is playing right away with veterans like right guard Graham Glasgow and right tackle Ja'Wuan James, Cushenberry said he will be comfortable leading vocally. "I'm not really vocal off the field, but on the field, I'm completely different," he said. "I made a lot of the calls, I was the main communicator and I got used to it. Now I love it. 2019 PRESEASON RIMINGTON TROPHY CANDIDATE: Lloyd Cushenberry III, LSU,...Cushenberry, a junior from Dutchtown High School in Geismar, started every game at center last year, helping the Tigers to a 10-3 record and a No. 6 final ranking. Cushenberry was o ne of just two offensive linemen - the other was guard Damien Lewis - to start every game for the Tigers in 2018. Cushenberry, in his first year as LSU's starting center, finished second on the team among offensive linemen in total snaps with 973. He played every offensive snap in 11 of LSU's 13 games, including all 96 plays in the seven-overtime contest against Texas A&M and 86 snaps in the Tigers' win over UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. He also helped pave the way for 1,000-yard rusher Nick Brossette. Former Tiger All-America Ben Wilkerson was the recipient of the Rimington Trophy in 2004 after being a finalist for the award in 2003. - LSU Football
