  07/29/21 - FS Deontai WilliamsrSr/2022, Nebraska, 5-11, 203 (DS#19 FS) + More +

Deontai Williams walks into the Nebraska football locker room, and suddenly he's sitting in a rocking chair and telling all those young kids about the good old days. This is hard to do when you're just 24 years old. "I'm like a grandpa to be honest with you," Williams said with a laugh last week at Big Ten Media Days. "Walking in the locker room, seeing that you're the oldest person on the team... I'm young, but it makes me feel like I'm older than I am." Williams would rather stay at home nowadays. He's got a son who will be 2 years old before too long. He was always a quiet guy anyway, he said. When Nebraska's younger players come to him with their stories of the most recent party, Williams just smiles and shakes his head. "I'm like, I already did that," NU's sixth-year defensive back said.

Yeah, life is different now than it was six years ago when Williams first started his college football journey. The quiet guy who NU coach Scott Frost struggled to get a word out of when he first got to campus in 2018 after two years at Jones County (Miss.) Community College. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety is coming off a season in which he started seven of eight games and had a career-high 51 tackles while earning honorable mention all-Big Ten honors. After that COVID-19 affected season ended in December, Williams announced in January he was coming back for one more ride with the Huskers, setting off a chain reaction of sixth-year players returning to Lincoln. - Lincoln Journal Star

Three veteran Nebraska football players, including two stalwarts from a defense with ample returning experience, will represent the program next week during Big Ten Media Days in Indianapolis. Junior tight end Austin Allen, the team's second-leading receiver in 2020, will represent the offense, while seniors Ben Stille (22-game starter) and Deontai Williams (nine) will represent the defense. The media-oriented event, canceled last year due to COVID-19, will be Thursday and Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The gathering is typically held in Chicago, just a short drive from the conference's headquarters in Rosemont, Illinois, but changed locations due to coronavirus restrictions still in place in Chicago. - Lincoln Journal Star

Nebraska's senior safety pair will be back together again in 2021. A couple of hours after Deontai Williams announced he was going to return for the 2021 season on Wednesday morning, his starting mate, Marquel Dismuke, did the same. The duo returning for the NCAA's extra season of eligibility fortifies a position group that otherwise would have been quite young this fall and all but ensures that defensive coordinator Erik Chinander will again oversee a veteran unit in 2021. Williams played in all eight games for the Huskers in 2020 and made seven starts after missing nearly the entire 2019 season due to a shoulder injury. - Lincoln Journal Star

2021 SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST: Deontai Williams, Nebraska,...Williams earned the start and made two early tackles in the season opener with South Alabama before leaving the game in the first half with an injury. The injury proved to be season-ending, as Williams appeared in only one game as a junior in 2019. - Nebraska Football

  07/15/19 - FS Deontai WilliamsrSr/2022, Nebraska, 5-11, 203 (DS#19 FS) + More +

Nebraska secondary coach Travis Fisher said during the spring that Williams realistically could've been a starter last season. For one thing, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Williams was "probably the most athletic safety I had last year." But there was at least one significant challenge that helps explain why Williams started only one game: He had to master the playbook. A mid-year enrollee in January 2018, Williams grasped enough to be on the field at times - he finished with 23 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles - but often freelanced too much, according to his coaches.

"He's always played with speed and violence," defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said in the spring. "The difference for him right now is he really understands what we want to get done. It's not just renegade football. It's not intramural football anymore. It's running stuff within the scheme of the defense, playing within the scheme of the defense, but still playing with that same violence and intensity that he had when he kind of didn't know what he was doing." - Lincoln Journal Star
