Montrell Johnson Jr., Florida, Player News

  11/12/22 - RB Montrell Johnson Jr.Sr/2025, Florida, 5-11, 215 (DS#6 RB) + More +

Montrell Johnson Jr. ran for a career-high 161 yards and a touchdown, Anthony Richardson accounted for three scores in what might have been his final home game at Florida and the Gators steamrolled South Carolina 38-6 on Saturday. Florida (6-4, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) avenged an ugly loss to the Gamecocks last season, won consecutive league games for the first time in nearly two years and became bowl eligible in coach Billy Napier's first season. The Gators dominated from the start, scoring on their first four drives and leading 24-0 before South Carolina (6-4, 3-4) crossed midfield. Richardson opened the drubbing with a 3-yard run and doubled the lead with a 15-yard strike to Ricky Pearsall. Freshman Trevor Etienne had the play of the game: an 85-yard TD run that made it 21-0 late in the first quarter.

South Carolina's third quarter was somehow worse than its first. Coach Shane Beamer's team fumbled three times in its first four snaps out of the locker room, gift-wrapping three short fields for Florida that resulted in a missed field goal, a touchdown and a turnover on downs. Florida's defense played its best game of the season, with the highlight coming when 415-pound defensive tackle Desmond Watson ripped the ball out of Jaheim Bell's arms and rambled 8 yards the other way. Watson was so tired that he barely celebrated when he reached teammates eagerly awaiting his arrival on the sideline. Nonetheless, it was just the start of an hours-long party for the Gators, who finished with 374 yards rushing. Richardson completed 11 of 23 passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 96 yards and a score. Etienne finished with 100 yards on the ground. At one point, Florida had three guys with at least 100 yards rushing - a feat last accomplished by the Gators in 1984. But Richardson lost 6 yards on a sack in the fourth before heading to the bench. Little went right for South Carolina, which played without running back MarShawn Lloyd (thigh bruise). - AP College Football

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Running back Montrell Johnson followed new Florida coach Billy Napier from Louisiana-Lafayette and was a bright spot during spring practice.   After a freshman season that many desire yet few experience, Montrell Johnson made the difficult decision to leave Louisiana - though he insists he didn't initially intend to follow his coach in 2021, Billy Napier, to the Florida football program. "I was still focusing on our bowl game and trying to win that. I was focused on ending the season right," Johnson recalled. "After the season, I didn't really think about it as much." With his first spring at Florida in the books, Johnson has set the record straight on his arrival in Gainesville with Napier: they weren't a package deal in any sense.

During his freshman season, he rushed for 838 yards along with 12 rushing touchdowns and was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, but Johnson already was focused on tougher competition. "I knew that I could play at a higher level," he said. "I knew that Florida could be one of those places I could be at." Not that his freshman season altered his thinking in any way. He may have had a three-star designation as a prospect by 247Sports coming out of De La Salle in New Orleans, but Johnson didn't think of himself as a middle-of-the-pack player. His perception of his ability didn't lead to a wave of offers from Southeastern Conference programs, however, with only Tennessee and Vanderbilt extending scholarship offers. Nearby LSU didn't think he had what it took to compete weekly against the nation's best collegiate talent. "It was a huge chip on my shoulder. I felt like I was very under-recruited in high school," Johnson said. "I wanted to come in and show what I can do." - Gainesville Sun

2021 ALL-SUN BELT SECOND TEAM (COACHES): RB - Montrell Johnson, Louisiana (Fr., RB - New Orleans, La.),...Johnson has been stellar as a rookie, boasting 776 rushing yards on 135 carries and a team-best 11 rushing touchdowns. He is the fourth player in program history to be named the league's Freshman of the Year, joining Tyrell Fenroy (2005), Alonzo Harris (2011) and Elijah McGuire (2013). The freshman's 11 scores are the third most on the ground in the Sun Belt this season and are the second-most by a Louisiana freshman since 2000 behind Fenroy's 12 scores in 2005. He also owns a 99-yard rushing touchdown, which he recorded against Arkansas State on Oct. 21, making him one of 13 players in NCAA history to accomplish the feat. - Louisiana Football

Montrell Johnson had two fourth-quarter touchdown runs and No. 24 Louisiana-Lafayette scored all its points on its final three possessions to rally for a 21-17 victory over Georgia State on Thursday night. The Ragin' Cajuns (8-1, 6-0 Sun Belt) locked up the conference West Division title for the fourth straight season and won their eighth straight game after a season-opening loss at Texas. Louisiana-Lafayette also qualified for the Sun Belt championship game. Johnson ran for 98 yards, with scoring runs of 3 and 13 yards, the second with 2:32 left to cap a winning 71-yard drive. Louisiana-Lafayette held the Panthers on downs at midfield in the final minute.

Georgia State (4-5, 3-2), winless against the Cajuns in five meetings, took a 17-14 lead with 5:25 left on Tucker Gregg's 1-yard run. The Cajuns were shut out for most of the first three quarters by the two-touchdown-underdog Panthers, who took a 10-0 third-quarter lead on Darren Grainger's 37-yard scoring pass to tight end Roger Carter. Louisiana-Lafayette had scoring chances, driving inside the 10 twice in the first half, but failed on two fourth-down tries. Levi Lewis threw incomplete in the end zone on fourth down on Louisiana-Lafayette's first possession, and was sacked for a 6-yard loss on fourth down from the 6 just before halftime. - Louisiana-Lafayette/AP College Football

The first was Ohio quarterback Armani Rogers, who covered that distance against Buffalo. Before those two runs, no one had gone 99 yards on a rushing attempt since Abdul Adams of Oklahoma against Baylor in 2017. - AP College Football
