  10/29/22 - QB Dematrius DavisrJr/2026, Transfer, 5-11, 193 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Dematrius Davis found Jeremiah Hixon with a 23-yard touchdown pass with two minutes left in the game to earn Alabama State a come-from-behind, 24-17 win over Alabama A&M in the 81st Magic City Classic Saturday, claiming HBCU bragging rights in the state for the first time since 2017. The Hornets (5-3, 3-2 Southwestern Conference) took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter when Jayden John kicked a career-long 49-yard field goal, but Alabama A&M (3-5, 3-2) stormed back to take a 14-3 lead at intermission on a Quincy Casey touchdown pass to Isiah Cox and Jamal Irby's six-yard pick-six. Davis hit Kisean Johnson from nine yards out and Jacory Merritt scored on a four-yard run to give Alabama State a 17-14 lead. Victor Barbosa kicked 37-yard field goal with 6:06 left to pull the Bulldogs into a 17-17 tie before Davis engineered a six-play, 81-yard game-winning drive. Casey finished 16 of 21 for 217 yards and a touchdown and Xavier Lankford was 4 of 7 for 22 yards as the Alabama A&M passing game generated 239 yards but managed just one score. Davis finished 11 of 25 passing for 140 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. - Alabama State/AP College Football

  09/03/22 - QB Dematrius DavisrJr/2026, Transfer, 5-11, 193 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Dematrius Davis and Myles Crawley threw touchdown passes in the first quarter and Alabama State held on to defeat Division II Miles College 21-13 on Saturday night. Stanto Dunn scored late in the first quarter to make it 21-0 but couldn't muster any more against the Golden Bears. Jayce Melock capped a two-play, 59-yard drive early in the first by catching a 14-yard slant pass to open the scoring, a play set up by a 45-yard completion on a wide receiver reverse pass. Crawley threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Darius Edmonds on his first throw of the game to make it 14-0. Dunn capped the scoring for the Hornets (2-0), whose drives covered 59, 56 and 51 yards. After a pair of field goals Miles got back in the game on a 15-yard pass from Jacob Millhouse to Collin Woods with 2:54 to go. A turnover at the Miles 12-yard line with 1:10 left gave the Golden Bears, who were down to their third-string quarterback, a final chance but they couldn't get out of their end before time ran out during a multiple lateral razzle-dazzle play. - AP College Football

  08/28/22 - QB Dematrius DavisrJr/2026, Transfer, 5-11, 193 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Freshman Dematrius Davis directed touchdown drives in each of the first three quarters to lead Alabama State to a 23-13 victory over Howard University in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff on Saturday. Davis led the Hornets on a five-play, 55-yard drive for a 6-3 lead on their second possession, culminating with Ja'Won Howell's 3-yard TD run. The two-point try failed. The lead grew to 13-3 in the second quarter when Davis took the Hornets 77 yards in seven plays, connecting with Isaiah Scott from 11 yards out for the score.

Alabama State turned the Bison over on downs in the third period and Davis took the Hornets 99 yards for a TD. Jacory Merritt ended the nine-play drive with a 21-yard TD run. Backup QB Myles Crawley hit Scott for a 61-yard gain on the drive. It was his only pass. Dylan West kicked two field goals for Howard and Jarett Hunter added a 9-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Davis completed 17 of 24 passes for 186 yards with an interception for the Hornets. Freshman Nathanial Eichner kicked a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. - AP College Football

  04/21/22 - QB Dematrius DavisrJr/2026, Transfer, 5-11, 193 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Dematrius Davis won't be going far to continue his football career, as the former Auburn quarterback announced Monday that he'd be continuing his college career at Alabama State in Montgomery. Davis, who entered the transfer portal on March 23, spent a season in Auburn, signing with the Tigers in December 2020 - between the firing of former coach Gus Malzahn and hiring of Bryan Harsin.

Recruited by Malzahn, Davis never saw the field during Harsin's first year. Davis was a four-star recruit out of North Shore High School in Texas, where he won two state titles. He chose the Tigers over offers from Baylor, Arkansas and LSU, among others. The second-year player was splitting reps with quarterbacks TJ Finley and Robby Ashford in spring practice prior to his departure, and was expected to take part in a four-man competition between Finley, Ashford, Zach Calzada and himself for Auburn's QB1 spot. Alabama State competes in Division I FCS. - Opelika-Auburn News
