Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee is leaving school to enter the NFL draft. McKee announced his decision on Thursday after a disappointing junior season on an overmatched Stanford team. McKee completed 62% of his passes for 2,947 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions this season as Stanford went 3-9 for a second straight year. Stanford will undergoing an overhaul with coach David Shaw stepping down after 12 seasons and several players expected to transfer. - AP College Football

  11/27/22 - QB *Tanner McKeeJr/2023, Stanford, 6-6, 231 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Stanford coach David Shaw resigned Saturday night after finishing his 12th season at his alma mater with a 36-25 loss to BYU that dropped the Cardinal to 3-9. Shaw, 50, led Stanford to five double-digit win seasons, with three Pac-12 titles and Rose Bowl appearances in his first six years as head coach. He finished with more wins than any coach in program history with a 96-54 record, and was considered one of the most respected coaches in the country. Shaw arrived unusually late to his postgame news conference and said his decision only came in the last few days. "A week ago, 10 days ago, I was gung-ho to be the person to lead us there, and over the last few days I realized it was time," Shaw said. "It was time for me to step aside, time for the next group to come in, and hopefully whoever they hire next wins more games than I do. That would be awesome." The falloff in recent years has been drastic. The Cardinal are 14-28 over the last four seasons as the program has struggled to keep up in a rapidly changing college football landscape with players transferring more freely and earning money for name, image and likeness.

Stanford is 3-16 in Pac-12 play the past two seasons, including consecutive losses to rival California. "There are a lot of people that think this program is down. That's what our record says," Shaw said. "But I look at the components. I look at the people here, the support that I'm hearing coming from our athletic director, from our university president, the people that are behind the scenes. We're not that far away." Shaw, a California native who played receiver for Stanford in the early 1990s, replaced Jim Harbaugh as head coach in 2011. He had been offensive coordinator for Harbaugh from 2007-10. Shaw spent nine seasons as an NFL assistant before joining Harbaugh's staff at the University of San Diego and then following him to Stanford. - AP College Football

  10/16/22 - QB *Tanner McKeeJr/2023, Stanford, 6-6, 231 (DS#6 QB) + More +

Tanner McKee passed for 288 yards, Casey Filkins scored a touchdown and Joshua Karty kicked three field goals as Stanford ended an 11-game losing streak against FBS opponents, beating Notre Dame 16-14 on Saturday night. The Cardinal (2-4), who blew a two-touchdown lead against Oregon State a week earlier, put the game away when Stanford safety Jonathan McGill broke up a pass by Drew Pyne on fourth-and-7 from the Notre Dame 25-yard line with 1:04 left. It was Stanford's first win against an FBS opponent since beating then-No. 3 Oregon 31-24 in overtime on Oct. 2, 2021. After the game, the Cardinal ran to the end of the field where their fans were and celebrated. It's the second embarrassing home loss of the season for the Irish (3-3). The Irish were beaten 26-21 by Marshall in the second game of the season, but had won three straight since. The Irish offense couldn't get much going against a Stanford defense that entered the game 111th in scoring defense, giving up 32.6 points a game.

Notre Dame scored touchdowns on back-to-back possessions in the second half, but fumbled the ball away on their next possession. Stanford scored its lone touchdown on its first possession, driving 66 yards in eight plays, capped by a 2-yard run by Filkins. Karty then kicked field goals of 45, 43 and 43 yards. McKee was 26-of-38 passing for 288 yards and the Cardinal had a 385 yards to 311 yards advantage in total offense. Pyne was 13-of-27 passing for 151 yards for the Irish with a fumble. He threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Tobias Merriweather and Audric Estime had a 10-yard scoring run as Notre Dame overcame a 13-0 deficit to take a 14-13 lead, but couldn't hold on. It appeared the Irish might have a short field to work with when officials ruled McKee had fumbled, but the call was overturned when replay showed his knee was down. The Cardinal took a 16-14 lead on a 43-yard field goal by Karty with 10:20 left. The Irish were driving on their next possession, but Estime fumbled at the Stanford 25-yard line on a hit by Kendall Williamson and Jonathan McGill recovered at the 21. - Stanford/AP College Football

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 12. Tanner McKee, Jr, QB, Stanford, 6-5, 230, 1,...Faced with an athletic and aggressive USC defense, Tanner McKee actually looked better than the numbers on the stats sheet -- 20 of 35 for 220 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. His first interception was tipped at the line and on the second his receiver lost a jump-ball in the end zone. McKee ran eight times, not always by choice, for minus 15 yards. Previous week, No. 14: McKee threw two touchdown passes to Michael Wilson and Stanford routed FCS Colgate 41-10 in a season opener. McKee completed 22 of 27 for 308 yards, the two touchdowns and one interception. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Stanford coach David Shaw spends part of his offseason each year studying up for his side gig as a draft analyst so he knows very well what NFL teams are looking for in a quarterback. When the Cardinal (1-0) host No. 10 Southern California (1-0) on Saturday in the Pac-12 opener this season, Shaw sees a pair of potential NFL prospects in the Trojans' dynamic dual-threat quarterback Caleb Williams and his own more traditional passer, Tanner McKee. "I don't know that these aren't the top two quarterbacks in our conference going head to head," Shaw said. "As pure passers, they're both exceptional. As a runner, Tanner is underappreciated but at the same time Caleb is special there. You're talking about two guys, when you watch them play, you're looking at two NFL quarterbacks. It will be fun to watch." Williams was outstanding in his debut for the Trojans after following coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma to USC as a transfer this offseason.

Williams completed 19 of 22 passes against Rice for 249 yards and two TDs. He also ran for 68 yards on six carries. "He's a special kid and he can do it all," Riley said. "He can literally do it all. He can pass, he can paint your back porch, he can walk your dog, and he can run the ball. He's a great player." McKee was also sharp last week against lesser competition, going 22 for 37 for 308 yards and two TDs against FCS-level Colgate. McKee made his first career start last year against the Trojans when he threw for 234 yards and two TDs in a 42-28 win at the Los Angeles Coliseum, where he used to go as a kid cheering for USC. - AP College Football

2022 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD WATCH LIST: Tanner Mckee, Stanford,...After a Mormon mission in Brazil for almost two years, quarterback Tanner McKee finally into full-time campus and football life last year. Stanford's online media page keeps referencing his 2021 football accomplishments as those of a "freshman" although it is listed as his sophomore season and he did play in 2020 (3 for 7, 62 yards), which would have been his freshman season. Right? But perhaps there is some Covid math in there and the folks at Stanford think on a different level, so the rest of us struggle to understand. Regardless, as a 6-6, 226 pound quarterback, probably a sophomore, in 2021, McKee started nine games, making 10 appearances on the season. He threw for 2,327 off 206-of-315 (65.4%), scored 19 total touchdowns. Became the 13th FBS quarterback since 2012 to beat a ranked opponent on the road in a first career start at No. 14 USC . . . went 16-of-23 for 234 yards, with two passing touchdowns, no interceptions, and one rushing touchdown . . . three total touchdowns are tied with Kevin Hogan (2012) for the most total touchdowns by a Stanford quarterback in their first career starts. His size, arm-strength and football IQ make him a strong NFL prospect. - Stanford Football and Frank Cooney/Draft Scout Commentary

We envision McKee as one of the top quarterbacks in the conference - and a potential high-round draft pick - but cannot ignore his skinny frame, lack of mobility, wobbly offensive line and the potential for injury. Patu attempted just 16 passes in his rookie season. The Cardinal stands as a classic QBCQ case study: It has no reason to worry about its quarterback play, unless it has reason to panic. - Oakland Tribune

The best pure passer in the conference since Stanford's Davis Mills in 2020, the 6-foot-6 McKee has the pocket skills necessary to become a Day One pick. He's not as mobile as Mills, which could limit his NFL value and seemingly increases the chances of injury given Stanford's likely reliance upon the passing game. But if he stays healthy and slings it as we expect, the scouts will rave. - Denver Post

Stanford's comeback victory that stunned Oregon was enough of a roller-coaster that coach David Shaw felt the need to apologize to his parents and any other fans older than 70 for the emotional toll. The Cardinal overcame a blown lead and had their banged-up quarterback stage an improbable rally before finally prevailing over the third-ranked Ducks. Tanner McKee threw a TD pass on an untimed down at the end of regulation to tie the game and another on the opening possession of overtime to lead Stanford to a 31-24 victory. McKee came back after leaving for a play on the final drive of regulation with injured ribs to tie it on a 2-yard pass to Elijah Higgins after a holding penalty by Oregon in the end zone extended the game one play. - AP College Football

Tanner McKee threw a TD pass on an untimed down at the end of regulation to tie the game and another on the opening possession of overtime to lead Stanford to a 31-24 victory over No. 3 Oregon on Saturday. McKee came back after leaving for a play on the final drive of regulation with an injury to tie it on a 2-yard pass to Elijah Higgins after a holding penalty by Oregon (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) in the end zone extended the game one play. McKee then gave the Cardinal (3-2, 2-1) the lead with a 14-yarder to John Humphreys in overtime. Stanford then forced Anthony Brown to throw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-8 to seal its fourth win against an Oregon team ranked in the top 10 since 2009.

The Ducks were appeared poised for their first 5-0 start in eight years when they rallied from 10 points down at halftime to take a 24-17 lead early in the fourth quarter on Brown's second TD run of the game. But then McKee delivered the big plays late and the Cardinal capitalized on three Oregon penalties on the game-tying 87-yard drive in the final 1:59 of regulation. McKee left the game for one play on the drive after being hit by Kayvon Thibodeaux on a play ruled targeting. Oregon was then called for another roughing the passer penalty and the holding penalty in the end zone on what appeared to be the final play. The Cardinal got the untimed down and McKee delivered with the pass to Higgins. Coach David Shaw opted for the extra point and the game went to OT. - Stanford/AP College Football

The Stanford Cardinal finally are heading home to play in front of fans in their own stadium, and they're taking a two-game winning streak with them. Tanner McKee ran for a touchdown and threw for two more as Stanford beat Vanderbilt 41-23 Saturday night in the first meeting between the programs best known for their academics. Stanford (2-1) started the season playing the first three games on the road, the only Power Five program this season to even play its first two straight games away from home.

That's after playing the final four games of the 2020 season away from home because of the pandemic. "It's been a long time," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "Was kind of being facetious at the end of the game. We have to give the guys a map to the game day locker room. We haven't been there in so long. We're excited. We're excited to finally be able to go home. It's been a long road trip." Vanderbilt (1-2) lost its eighth straight at home. The Commodores' last home win was Nov. 23, 2019. Stanford took control scoring 13 points in the final 1:53 of the second quarter. The Cardinal then scored on the first possession of the third quarter for 20 points. "It was fast," Shaw said. "A lot of stuff happened." - Stanford/AP College Football

After Nathaniel Peat broke a tackle and turned the corner, the Coliseum collectively gasped as the speedy Stanford tailback sprinted all the way down his sideline. "I just saw green grass, and I had to put the wheels on," Peat said with a grin. When he finally stopped, his 87-yard touchdown run had given the Cardinal a whole lot more than their first seven points in an impressive 42-28 upset of No. 14 Southern California on Saturday night. "Guys saw Nate take off, and there were great blocks down the field," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "It just gave us a lift, and then we got a stop, and we said, ‘Hey, you know, we can play with these guys. And not only can we play with them, we can dominate." The Cardinal did just that in a victory that dramatically altered the early season trajectories of two longtime Pac-12 rivals.

Tanner McKee passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another score in his first collegiate start as Stanford (1-1, 1-0 Pac-12) rebounded from a rough 24-7 loss to Kansas State last week in which the Cardinal didn't even score until the final minutes. Peat racked up a career-high 115 yards, and Kyu Blu Kelly returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown in Shaw's 63rd conference victory at Stanford, moving him past Pete Carroll for ninth-most in Pac-12 history. "It shows who we are as a team," Peat said. "We have a lot of playmakers and a lot of potential. Last week, we really didn't show who we were." McKee went 16 of 23 for 234 yards, and he hit Elijah Higgins and Brycen Tremayne for TDs as Stanford rolled to a 29-point lead in the fourth quarter of its ninth victory over USC in the California rivals' last 14 meetings. - Stanford/AP College Football
