  01/09/23 - DE J.J. WeaverrSr/2025, Kentucky, 6-5, 244 (DS#16 DE) + More +

Kentucky football's defense got a lift Sunday afternoon. Fourth-year junior linebacker JJ Weaver announced on social media he'll return for his senior season. "This what's best for me!!" his tweet said in part. A third-team All-Southeastern Conference pick and team captain in 2022, Weaver finished with 47 tackles (six for loss), three sacks and two forced fumbles for a Wildcats defense that ranked 11th in the nation before the Music City Bowl.

Arguably his best game came in the regular-season finale against Louisville, when he posted seven tackles, a TFL, a sack, a forced fumble and a pass breakup in a 26-13 win. Weaver went through senior day festivities but hadn't announced his intentions at the time. Weaver started a career-high nine games (out of 11 played) in 2022 and has started 16 of 35 games in his career. He had six sacks in 2021, a career high, after tearing his ACL in November 2020. - Courier Journal

Louisville native J.J. Weaver could be back on the field for Kentucky football faster than expected this fall. "J.J. is doing very good," UK coach Mark Stoops said during Kentucky's appearance at SEC Media Days Tuesday. "He's definitely ahead of schedule, working extremely hard." Weaver, a former star at Moore High School, was in the midst of a breakout season when he tore the ACL in his right knee in a Nov. 28 game against Florida. He finished the season with 33 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and one-half sack in nine games. Weaver was voted to the SEC's All-Freshman team by the league coaches.

"He's working his tail off," UK defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Brad White said when asked about Weaver's rehabilitation during spring practice. "That's all I can ask for: A guy that puts in the time and he grinds. ... Right now, it's big on the mental piece. ... When he steps back, he may not be able to physically execute them but at least if we can have it all mentally locked in then we're further ahead in the process. OK, when you come back, let's physically put those things into action and go from there. "He's done a great job. He's up all the time watching film. He's asking questions. He's getting all his rehab sessions in, pushing harder. 'OK, can I come up after, let's do some individual stuff.' He's in every meeting. So, really pleased with that. Trying to get as much squeezed out of that as we can." - Courier Journal

Louisville native J.J. Weaver's season is finished for Kentucky football after tearing his ACL in his first career start at Florida. Weaver's mother, Stacey Sherrell, confirmed the news in a Facebook post, noting surgery will be scheduled for later in the week. The injury came just days after Weaver had been elevated to the starting spot at Kentucky's "Jack" linebacker position. He recorded six tackles in Saturday's loss. On the season, Weaver has totaled 33 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and one-half sack.

"I'm excited about his future, excited to watch him play this week, excited to see what he can do in there early in the game," defensive coordinator Brad White said before the game. "We're going to see. It's going to be a big game in a big environment. I think he can handle it. "What he's doing right now is he's playing strong, he's playing violent. He's not overthinking. He's letting his natural ability shine. Again, it's not perfect technique-wise. There are things we're still cleaning up, even assignment-wise, but every week has been better. He looks more and more comfortable every time he steps on the field." Rehabilitation for a torn ACL can take up to a year, putting Weaver's status for the 2021 season in jeopardy. - Courier Journal

Moving Josh Paschal to defensive end accomplished two goals for Kentucky. Now fully recovered from his immunotherapy treatments after a malignant melanoma diagnosis, Paschal has regained the weight that makes him an excellent fit for a pass-rushing lineman. Also, the move to one of the open defensive line starting spots allows for more reps at his old position, "Jack" linebacker, for Jordan Wright and J.J. Weaver. Wright is projected to open the season as the starter, but Weaver was already pushing for a larger role down the stretch during his 2019 redshirt season and has apparently built on that success throughout the offseason.

"J.J. is ready to take a step," defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Brad White said. "...The fact that he's just a redshirt freshman, he's had a really solid camp thus far. He's really done a great job in terms of shaping his body. He's already had really good length, but his flexibility, his twitch have improved. His weight and his mass have improved, and his understanding of the game is improved." With Boogie Watson, Paschal, Wright and Weaver, Kentucky should have no shortage of pass rushing options this season. He seems ready to contribute now, but the season could be particularly important for Weaver positioning himself to take over Watson's starting outside linebacker spot in 2021. "He's really started to take a step there," White said. "Really excited about the potential that he has in him and how much more there still is to tap into." - Courier Journal
