Things are looking up at UCF, on the roster and on the coaching staff. Former Florida wide receiver Trent Whittemore is staying in-state and is transferring to UCF, he announced via social media Saturday morning. Dan Mullen originally brought the Florida native to Gainesville, but struggled to find his footing under the leadership of new head coach Billy Napier, only having four receptions for 87 yards in 2022. Whittemore saw more success when Mullen was in charge, having 29 catches for 338 yards and two touchdowns during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

New UCF offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw signed a two-year deal that pays him $600,000 annually, according to documents obtained by the Orlando Sentinel. Additionally, new UCF defensive coordinator Addison Williams, who was promoted from assistant head coach and defensive backs coach, signed a two-year contract that included a $450,000 annual raise in pay, documents show. Williams originally signed a two-year deal that paid him $250,000 per year when he was hired by UCF coach Gus Malzahn in February 2021 but now he'll make $700,000 as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. - Orlando Sun Sentinel

Trent Whittemore has shown steady progress at receiver in each of his first three seasons with the Florida football team. Whittemore could carve out a bigger role in the offense for the Gators this upcoming season. He's been consistent throughout camp and is emerging as one of the leaders in a position group that will look to make more big plays under first-year coach Billy Napier. "We have a lot of good leadership in the room," Whittemore said. "Guys who have played some ball. (Justin) Shorter and Xzavier Henderson are guys that provide great leadership … along with myself in that room. I think we'll be ready to surprise some people during the season." Whittemore played mostly in the slot the last two seasons under former head coach Dan Mullen. In 29 games over the last two seasons, Whittemore has posted 29 catches for 338 yards and 2 TDs.

The 6-foot-3, 206-pound Whittemore is preparing this fall camp to play any of the three receiver spots on the field. "Coach Napier is going to put everybody in the right spot to make optimal plays," Whittemore said. "So I don't want to limit myself to any direct spot on the field. I just go wherever I'm placed that week as far as game plan goes. And like I said, Coach Napier is a great offensive mind and I think he'll change up some looks throughout the year and that will be to our benefit." Rather than focus on anything specific, Whittemore said his offseason development consisted of working on his all-around game. He's caught most targets thrown to him in individual drills, including some nifty one-handed catches on sideline routes. - Gainesville Sun

With his health back and an opening in the slot, Trent Whittemore is primed to play a more prominent role in Florida's receiving corps this season. After redshirting in 2019, the Gainesville native appeared in seven games last fall and had one of the best catches of the year vs. South Carolina. He also hauled in his first career touchdown against the Gamecocks and finished 2020 with 10 receptions for 128 yards. Best of all, he learned behind first-round pick Kadarius Toney, who produced the most single-season receiving yards (984) by a Gator since Riley Cooper in 2009.

"I was in a bit of a backup role to KT and it was just unbelievable to watch him every day in practice and in games. His poise, skill, obviously, and just gain from his experience," Whittemore said. "It was just great to be in that rotation, to get experienced for myself, catching balls from Kyle [Trask]. "I made a couple plays early in the year that were great for my confidence. It was a great experience to be out there on the field in big games, and it's something I can draw on in the years to come." Whittemore would have made more plays if not for the broken rib and punctured lung he suffered against Arkansas. He returned for the regular season finale after missing five games, but it took him longer to fully recover from the injury. - The Gainesville Sun

Kyle Trask's pass may have been high, but that didn't mean it was out of Trent Whittemore's reach. The Florida wide receiver made a leaping two-handed reception on a crossing route that split the Gamecocks coverage and set up UF's second touchdown of the afternoon in the process. The 26-yard snag elicited praise from spectators and teammates alike, the latter of which have seen the Gainesville native diligently work his way into the wide receiver rotation this season. "Oh yeah, just a play that we've been repping in practice all week and I got man coverage and Kyle (Trask) just put it in a great spot. I praise the Lord I was able to come down with it," Whittemore said. "I just credit Kyle for a great throw, putting it in a spot where it was going to me or nobody. So, credit to him and praise the Lord I was able to come down with it."

And that display of athleticism? It was hardly a surprise to those who have been closely following his ascension. The son of Buchholz High football coach Mark Whittmore, and the younger brother of Troy University wide receiver Luke Whittemore, Trent's athletic abilities aren't a secret around Alachua County. It's well-known he's been able to dunk a basketball since he was a 13-year-old at Cornerstone Academy, and his talents on the hardwood have only improved in the time since he was a budding Gainesville-area prospect and a former Buchholz High standout. - Gainesville Sun
