The preseason MW Special Teams Player of the Year, By rd has returned 19 kickoffs for 487 yards (25.6 avg.) with a 95-yard touchdown and also returned 17 punts for 115 yards (6.8 avg.) and another score. It is Byrd's third career all-MW award at kick returner, having been a second-team pick in 2020 and a fi rst-team selection in 2021.Byrd has also rushed 91 times for a team-high 389 yards (4.3 avg.) with three touchdowns, while adding eight catches for 53 yards (6.6 avg.) with a touchdown, making him the first FBS player with at least one rushing tou chdown, receiving touchdown, kick return touchdown and punt return touchdown in the same season since Temple's Isaiah Wright in 2018 and just the second MW player in league history (also former Aztec Rashaad Penny in 2017). Jordan Byrd ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns - including a go-ahead 1-yard TD in the closing seconds - to help San Diego State beat Toledo 17-14 Saturday. Braxton Burmeister completed 3 of 4 passes for 25 yards and ran three times for 46 yards before Byrd scored from a yard out to cap the scoring with 41 seconds to play. Burmeister finished 13-of-24 passing for 65 yards and added 44 yards rushing on eight carries for San Diego State (2-2). Dequan Finn threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Turner that capped a 12-play, 73-yard drive and trimmed Toledo's deficit to 10-7 midway through the fourth quarter and, after San Diego State went three-and-out on the ensuing drive, the Rockets went 93 yards in eight play to take their first lead when Finn sco red on a 1-yard run with 2:56 to play. Jordan Byrd returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown and added a 53-yard scoring run to spark San Diego State to a 38-7 victory over FCS-member Idaho State on Saturday night. San Diego State (1-1) spotted Idaho State (0-2) a 7-0 lead - on a 75-yard scori ng strike from Tyler Vander Waal to Xavier Guillory two plays into the game - before scoring 38 straight points. Byrd's punt return tied the score at the 11:58 mark and Braxton Burmeister ran 47 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 first-quarter lead. The Az tecs stretched their lead to 21-7 in the second quarter on Byrd's long TD run. Jack Browning's 20-yard field goal increased San Diego State's advantage to 24-7 after three quarters. Burmeister hooked up with Tyrell Shavers for a 14-yard score and Cam Dav is added a 3-yard TD run in the final period for the Aztecs. Jordan Byrd ran for two touchdowns and San Diego State scored 24 points in the third quarter to pull away from Towson 48-21 on Saturday. The Aztecs now have outscored the opposition 62-0 in the third. Chris Ferguson threw a 19-yard scoring pass to Jerry Howard Jr. to give the feisty Tigers a 7-0 lead with 5:36 left in the first. San Diego State (4-0), which entered with wins over Pac-12 Conference squads Arizona and Utah, responded with scores in the form of 8- and 12-yard runs from Kaegun Williams and Byrd respectively. Lucas Johnson then threw a 16-yard scoring toss to Elijah Kothe with 4:03 before halftime. But Ferguson led the Tigers 80 yards in just four plays and his 4-yard TD to Caleb Smith made it a one score game. The Aztecs regrouped to shut the door on Towson by scoring two touchdowns within the first five minutes after the break. Trenton Thompson returned a blocked punt 11 yards 58 seconds in and Byrd's 55-yard jaunt ended Towson's (1-2) upset hopes. Jordan Byrd had a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, BJ Busbee scored on a 90-yard punt return, and San Diego State beat Colorado State 29-17 on Saturday. Jordan Brookshire was 14-of-22 passing for 130 yards and a TD and added a team-high 38 yards r ushing for San Diego State (4-3, 4-2 Mountain West Conference). The Aztecs never faced a third down during a 12-play, 81-yard drive capped by Brookshire's 8-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Matthews with 4:41 left in the first quarter that made it 7-0 and ga ve SDSU the lead for good.Robert Liss made a 43-yard field goal to make it 7-3 early in the second quarter, but Byrd caught the ensuing kickoff near the right sideline, cut back to the left and raced untouched down the left side and, after Colorad o State went three-and-out, Busbee's punt return gave the Aztecs a 20-3 lead with 10:24 left in the first half. 2020 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Jordan Byrd, SDSU,...An Albuquerque, N.M., native, Byrd is coming off a solid 2019 season when he led the Aztecs in all-purpose yards (831), all-purpose yards per game (69.2), punt return yards (93), punt ret urn average (7.8) and kick return yards (319). Byrd also rushed 78 times for 355 yards (4.6 avg.) and three touchdowns, including a career-high 139 yards against Central Michigan in the 2019 New Mexico Bowl en route to sharing most valuable offensive pla yer honors of the game with Jesse Matthews. Byrd, who also had 16 catches a year ago for 64 yards (4.0 avg.), has also been named a preseason third-team all-Mountain West pick as a kick returner by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele Magazine.
