  11/12/22 - QB Payton ThornerSr/2025, Auburn, 6-1, 210 (DS#46 QB) + More +

Payton Thorne threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns and Ben Patton hit two fourth-quarter field goals to lift Michigan State to a 27-21 victory Saturday over Rutgers and keep the Spartans' bowl hopes alive. The Spartans built a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter on Thorne's 25-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed. The Scarlet Knights (4-6, 1-6) pulled within 21-14 when tight end Johnny Langan plowed up the middle on a one-yard touchdown run late in the quarter. It was the first time in the last three games that Rutgers had scored any points in the second half. Rutgers had a chance to cut the margin in the final quarter but Jacob Slade blocked Jude McAtamney's 39-yard field goal attempt and cornerback Ameer Speed picked up the ball and returned it to the Michigan State 44. Seven plays later, Ben Patton made a 34-yard field goal to give the Spartans a 10-point lead with 6:28 to play. He later added a 48-yard kick.

Gavin Wimsatt was able to bring Rutgers within six points with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Shameen Jones on a fourth and 29 play with 47 seconds left. The Scarlet Knights attempted an onside kick, but it was fielded by the Spartans who ran out the clock. Despite totaling 283 yards of offense and allowing Rutgers to cross midfield only twice in the first half, Michigan State could not pull away from the Scarlet Knights. The Spartans opened the scoring in the first quarter when Thorne hit Daniel Barker on a 26-yard touchdown pass. The Scarlet Knights evened it late in the second quarter as Wimsatt capped a 96-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown throw to Aaron Young. Jalen Berger put Michigan State back on top 14-7 on the following possession with a two-yard run up the middle. The play was set up following a pass interference penalty in the end zone on Avery Young, giving the Spartans the ball at the Rutgers' 2. - Michigan State/AP College Football

  11/05/22 - QB Payton ThornerSr/2025, Auburn, 6-1, 210 (DS#46 QB) + More +

Payton Thorne didn't mince words about the negative cloud that hovered above Michigan State's football program this week. The Spartans quarterback said in the days leading to Saturday's game at No. 14 Illinois that "we're all we got" and "no one is coming to save us" after an embarrassing loss to rival Michigan and an uglier post-game fight which prompted suspensions for eight Michigan State players. Yet, Michigan State fought through it all for perhaps its biggest win of the season as Thorne threw for 182 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-15 victory over the Illini (7=2, 4-2 Big Ten). "I remember my dad telling me, 'There's a lot of opportunity in adversity,'" Thorne said. "Obviously, it was a pretty adverse situation this week. We definitely had some things happen to us that you wouldn't normally wish to happen, but we came out here and we played with the guys we had and the coaches we had and we played our butts off." The Spartans (4-5, 2-4) stopped the Illini five times on fourth down to end a three-game losing streak.

Despite the absences, the Spartans hung tough on the road against a ranked opponent - and threw a little chaos in the Big Ten West race. Spartans wideout Jayden Reed got loose for a 16-yard touchdown reception for a 23-7 lead with 2:57 to go and the defense did enough to halt a late comeback effort. Quarterback Tommy DeVito and the Illini (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) stalled at the Spartans' 25 when time expired. The win keeps Michigan State's bowl hopes alive with three games left, including home matchups against Big Ten East stragglers Rutgers and Indiana. Illinois carries a one-game Big Ten West lead with Purdue coming to town next week. Saturday also marked third-year coach Mel Tucker's fourth road win over a ranked Big Ten opponent. - Michigan State/AP College Football

  10/15/22 - QB Payton ThornerSr/2025, Auburn, 6-1, 210 (DS#46 QB) + More +

Quarterback Payton Thorne threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jayden Reed in the second overtime Saturday to lift Michigan State to a 34-28 victory over Wisconsin. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Spartans (3-4, 1-3 Big 10 Conference). It is the first loss for Wisconsin's interim coach Jim Leonhard who replaced Paul Chryst two weeks ago. The game-winning throw was set up after Michigan State's Jacoby Windmon stripped the ball from Braelon Allen on the first play of the second overtime and defensive tackle Dashaun Mallory pounced on the ball. Three plays later, Thorne hit Reed in the right corner of the end zone with the game-winner. On the first play of the first overtime, Reed threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman at the goal line, giving the Spartans a 28-21 lead.

Wisconsin's Graham Mertz tied the game when he connected with Chimere Dike on a 25-yard scoring pass. After Michigan State took a 21-14 lead, Mertz marched the Badgers 52 yards to even the game at 21 with 2:04 remaining on his 3-yard touchdown pass to Keontez Lewis. On the ensuing possession the Spartans had an opportunity to win the game in regulation by driving to the Badgers' 29-yard line. However, a bad snap on a 37-yard field goal forced holder Bryce Baringer to throw a pass that was intercepted by John Torchio. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Michigan State's Elijah Collins tied the game at 14 with 54 seconds remaining in the third quarter when he capped an eight-play, 97-yard drive with a 1-yard run. Tight end Maliq Carr keyed the march when he caught a 72-yard pass and was forced out at the Wisconsin 12 by Kamo'i Latu. Thorne tossed a 29-yard scoring pass to Coleman with 7:23 left to give the Spartans a 21-14 lead. The drive was kept alive by two pass interference penalties, including one on fourth and 4 from the Badgers' 44-yard line. - Michigan State/AP College Football

  09/02/22 - QB Payton ThornerSr/2025, Auburn, 6-1, 210 (DS#46 QB) + More +

Payton Thorne capped three straight drives with touchdown passes in the first half and threw for a fourth score in the final quarter to help No. 15 Michigan State pull away and beat Western Michigan 35-13 on Friday night. The Spartans played well in spurts, but also struggled for long stretches against the Broncos in the opener. After taking a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter, they allowed an average Mid-American Conference team to pull within eight points late in the third quarter. Michigan State was fortunate Thorne's uneven performance included four touchdowns to match his career high. He finished 12 of 24 for 233 yards with an interception.

Wisconsin transfer Jalen Berger ran for a career-high 120 yards and a touchdown that gave the Spartans a 28-13 lead with 6:28 remaining. Thorne's fourth touchdown, a 43-yard pass to Tre Mosley, on the next drive ended any doubt about the outcome. After a slow start, Thorne threw a short pass to freshman Germie Bernard, whose speed turned the play into a 44-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. Illinois transfer Daniel Barker used only his right hand to catch a 13-yard pass for a score and Keon Coleman ran under a 41-yard pass to put Michigan State ahead 21-3 early in the second quarter. Western Michigan pulled within 11 points midway through the third quarter, when it converted a fourth-and-1 at its 42 and Sean Tyler ran for a 4-yard touchdown a snap after picking up 45 yards on the ground. The Broncos made it 21-13 late in the third when Palmer Domschke made a 42-yard kick, but they couldn't make enough plays on both sides of the ball in the fourth quarter and fell to 1-30 against ranked teams. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Everyone wants a piece of Payton Thorne right now. Businesses hoping to land a name, image and likeness agreement. Media outlets seeking interviews. Friends and family hoping to spend some time with him during the offseason. But Thorne, entering his second season as Michigan State's starting quarterback, vows nothing can take his mind off football. "I feel fortunate for a lot of reasons," he said last week. "I'm extremely blessed to be here and to be able to play for this university, play for Coach (Mel) Tucker, play for all of our assistant coaches as well. I feel like I have an amazing quarterback coach and offensive coordinator in Coach (Jay) Johnson. I love playing with my teammates. And I just love being a part of our program, because I feel like our program is really on the upswing right now." The Spartans held their final spring practice April 16. Now, MSU is in the middle of offseason workouts.

Starting for a program with as proud a history as Michigan State, he said, "is a dream come true." The challenge is turning his dreams into reality. That starts with making sure the offseason continues to hum along - and to end it on a high note by the time the team reconvenes for preseason camp in August. "For me, it's, 'How can I become the best I can be?' " Thorne said. "It always has been that: 'How can I maximize the most out of what God gave me? That's the focus. It's working hard, caring about what you're doing, caring about your teammates, and trying to do things the right way. So I'm extremely blessed and fortunate to be where I'm at." - Lansing State Journal

Get used to Michigan State playing under the lights this fall. The Big Ten has started to announce kickoff times for select games in the upcoming 2022 season, including four for the Spartans and coach Mel Tucker, with two of those being played in prime time. The season begins on Sept. 2 as Michigan State hosts Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday of the Labor Day weekend. It's a spot on the schedule the Spartans have often occupied and they'll do so for the 10th time since 2011, with the game against the Broncos airing on ESPN. It will be the third time Michigan State has hosted Western Michigan in a Friday night opener, including in East Lansing in 2013 and in Kalamazoo in 2015.

Michigan State's Week 2 game at home against Akron will kick off at 4 p.m. on Sept. 10 and will be carried on the Big Ten Network. It is the third meeting all time between the schools and the first since 1914. The Spartans then head west on Sept. 17 to take on Washington in a game that will kick off at 7:30 p.m. and air nationally on ABC. It will be the second time Michigan State has played the Huskies in Seattle, the last in 1970, and precedes Washington's visit to Spartan Stadium in 2023. - Detroit News

Michigan State capped its turnaround from from a two-win season with a fourth-quarter comeback in the Peach Bowl. Payton Thorne's 22-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed gave No. 11 Michigan State the lead with less than three minutes remaining and the Spartans overcame an 11-point deficit to beat No. 13 Pittsburgh 31-21 on Thursday night in the Peach Bowl. Led by Thorne, the Spartans outscored the Panthers 21-0 in the final quarter. "The whole game, my teammates just kept telling me to stay up and keep chopping like we talk about," Thorne said. Linebacker Cal Haladay's 78-yard interception return for a touchdown with 22 seconds remaining ended Pitt fill-in quarterback Davis Beville's bid for a last-minute comeback in the game the Panthers played without star QB Kenny Pickett. Thorne threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes as Michigan State (11-2) rallied after trailing 21-10. "We got stronger and stronger as the game went," second-year coach Mel Tucker said. "We...were able to find a way to get it done." Michigan State finished 2-5 in its pandemic-shortened 2020 season. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Payton Thorne threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead No. 12 Michigan State to a 30-27 victory over Penn State on Saturday. Kennett Walker III rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries as the Spartans (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) bounced back from last week's 56-7 loss to Ohio State. Michigan State finished undefeated at home for the first time since 2015. Sean Clifford threw three touchdown passes, two to Jahan Dotson, for the Nittany Lions (7-5, 4-5).

Penn State closed out the regular season with five losses in its last seven games. Daequan Hardy's 27-yard interception return for a touchdown put Penn State up 20-17. Thorne's 1-yard plunge late in the third quarter gave the Spartans a 23-20 advantage. Thorne connected with Jayden Reed on a 20-yard scoring pass on a fourth-and-15 with 5:10 left to give Michigan State some cushion. Clifford threw to Parker Washington for a 15-yard TD in the final minute. The Spartans scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, including a 99-yard drive, and led 17-14 at halftime. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Payton Thorne, Jayden Reed, and Kenneth Walker combined to put together another explosive performance. Next week, the trio will need to be even better and their teammates on defense will have to be at their best. Thorne threw two of his four touchdown passes to Reed, and Walker ran for 143 yards and two scores to help No. 8 Michigan State bounce back from its first loss with a 40-21 victory over Maryland on Saturday. The Spartans (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 7 CFP ) stayed in the Big Ten championship race. If Mel Tucker's team can upset No. 6 Ohio State on the road next Saturday and beat No. 23 Penn State at home the following week, it will be in the conference's championship game in Indianapolis with an opportunity to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. "We know who we're playing and we know where we going," Thorne said. "In order to get to Indy, you have to go through Columbus and we know that. "It's going to be a huge game for our side of the conference" Michigan State and No. 9 Michigan are in a second-place tie behind the Buckeyes. Even though the Spartans beat the rival Wolverines two weeks ago, Jim Harbaugh's team was ranked one spot higher in the CFP rankings earlier this week. "Are we happy about it? No," Thorne acknowledged. "But things will work themselves out. We have two big games left on our schedule." - Michigan State/AP College Football

Payton Thorne passed for 261 yards and four touchdowns, two of those scoring throws going to Jalen Nailor, and Michigan State extended its unbeaten start by topping No. 24 Miami 38-17 on Saturday. Kenneth Walker III rushed for 172 yards and caught a touchdown pass for the Spartans (3-0), who are off to their best start since 2015. Jayden Reed also had a scoring catch and a touchdown run for Michigan State, which forced Miami quarterback D'Eriq King into four turnovers. King was 38 of 59 passing - both of them Miami school records - for 388 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Charleston Rambo tied a school record with 12 catches for Miami, good for 156 yards and both of the Hurricanes' touchdowns. Andres Borregales kicked a 55-yard field goal - matching the fourth-longest in school history - for the Hurricanes midway through the fourth, getting them within a touchdown. Thorne didn't need long to end their hopes, coming up big with his legs as well on what became the game-sealing drive. He got 22 yards up the middle on third-and-6 and then fell forward barely far enough - maybe by a chain link, two at the most - on fourth-and-1 with 4:25 left to extend the series. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Payton Thorne threw for four touchdowns, including two long strikes to Jayden Reed, and ran for another score as Michigan State rolled to a 42-14 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday. Thorne connected with Reed on Michigan State's first play from scrimmage, the second straight game in which the Spartans scored from 75-yards out on its opening play. They also combined on an 85-yard score during the second quarter. Thorne completed 15-of-21 passes for 280 yards. The duo built chemistry long ago. They were high school teammates at Naperville (Ill.) Central. "We've had a ton of those plays and those aren't going to be the last two," Thorne said. "We're just going to keep building. It's crazy how things have ended up and today was pretty cool." Reed caught four passes for 181 yards, while Jordon Simmons rushed for 140 yards on 19 carries for the Spartans (2-0), who led 35-7 at halftime.

Demeatric Crenshaw rushed for 69 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown for the Penguins (1-1). Kenneth Walker III scored on a 75-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the Spartans' season-opening victory at Northwestern. This time, he took a handoff and pitched it back to Thorne on a flea flicker. Reed caught the ball at the Penguins' 37 and raced into the end zone on the 75-yard score. "I wish we could score every play on the first play," Reed said. "We did it last week and this week. That's the standard, so we're going to make that the goal for next week as well." - Michigan State/AP College Football
