Garrett Wilson stands by his opinion that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the best Ohio State wide receiver between himself and Chris Olave. Talking to Yahoo Sports' Matt Harmon from Super Bowl LVII Radio Row, the former Ohio State and current New York Jets wide receiver gave people a preview of what Smith-Njigba could do in the NFL after three seasons with the Buckeyes. "Jaxon is a cold-blooded man, man," Wilson said. "That boy is, we call him 'The Natural.' He's got hands, he's got feet that will throw you by, make you miss. He'll do the laundry for you. Jaxon's cold, man. I'm confident that wherever he goes, he's going to make a big impact early." Smith-Njigba tweeted that he appreciated the kind words from Wilson, knowing that both him and Olave was the kind of production he was chasing. "Always appreciate it," he wrote. "Both you guys are the BEST though! It's fun to chase greatness."

In 2021, Smith-Njigba set school single-season records with 95 catches for 1,606 receiving yards, including a 15-reception, 347-yard day against Utah in the Rose Bowl in which he scored three touchdowns. But in 2022, Smith-Njigba spent the majority of the season sidelined with a hamstring injury, and was limited to five receptions for 43 yards against Notre Dame, Toledo and Iowa. Ahead of Ohio State's College Football Playoff semifinal game against Georgia, the school announced he would not play in the Peach Bowl and instead enter the 2023 NFL draft. - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State football coach Ryan Day said Jaxon Smith-Njigba's decision to shut down for the season helped bring the star receiver "peace" after a once-promising season ruined by injury. Ohio State announced last Monday that Smith-Njigba would not play in the Peach Bowl against Georgia and would begin rehabbing in preparation of April's NFL Draft. The preseason All-American suffered a hamstring injury on opening night against Notre Dame that limited him to only two more games. During the season, Smith-Njigba was the subject of weekly speculation as to whether he could return.

After his decision to forgo his remaining eligibility, speculation about the true extent of the injury also surfaced. Day said all of that noise took its toll on the receiver. "In a day and age where you're not going to go out there and give a lot of detail about what the injury is, and so many people questioning and asking for him - that wasn't easy for him, either," Day said. "We knew he wasn't going to be able to play this next month. It was ruled out by the doctors. They made the decision. Just felt like it was time to put it to bed so he could get a little peace, because it was hard for him this season." For much of the season, Day spoke with optimism about Smith-Njigba's potential return to play down the stretch. That optimism continued even when the receiver experienced setbacks after returning to play against Toledo on Sept. 17 and Notre Dame on Oct. 22. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba will not play in the College Football Playoff semifinal game against top-ranked Georgia while he continues to rehabilitate a leg injury and prepare for the 2023 NFL draft. The AP Preseason All-American was hurt in the Buckeyes’ opener against Notre Dame and played in just two other games. Details on the seriousness of his injury weren’t disclosed through the season. The announcement was made by the football program on Monday. "I want to thank Jaxon for all he has done for our Ohio State program," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. "He has had such a major impact here in Columbus, on and off the field, in a relatively short period of time. We all know he has a very bright future ahead of him and we all support him as he moves forward with his career."

The Buckeyes play Georgia in a CPF semifinal in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31. Receivers Marvin Harrison Jr. (1,157 yards, 12 TDs) and Emeka Egbuka (1,039 yards, nine touchdowns) assumed larger roles in the passing game with Smith-Njigba sidelined. The junior from Rockwall, Texas, set school records in 2021 for receptions (95) and receiving yards (1,606). His yardage total broke a 20-year-old Big Ten Conference record. Smith-Njigba set an all-time bowl game record with 347 receiving yards in the 2022 Rose Bowl win over Utah. He also broke the Rose Bowl record with 15 receptions and tied the game record with three touchdowns. - AP College Football

There is no firm timetable on the return of Ohio State receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, NFL Draft Scout's top rated wide receiver all season. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said Tuesday that Smith-Njigba remains day to day after suffering an injury setback that left him unavailable for last week's rout of Wisconsin. Smith-Njigba first appeared to injure his hamstring in the season-opening win over Notre Dame when he was tackled in the first quarter.

Because of the lingering issue, Smith-Njigba has been limited through the first month of this season, playing only 38 snaps over two games, five three catches for 32 net yards (includes one catch for minus one yard vs. Notre Dame). He also sat against Arkansas State in the second week before coming back against Toledo. When asked if he regretted Smith-Njigba's return against Toledo, Day said they had no second thoughts. "You got to just trust in what you see and your evaluation," Day said, "and then go from there." Day reiterated he will defer to the medical staff and Smith-Njigba to determine when he is available. - Frank Cooney, NFL Draft Scout

Ohio State Coach Ryan Day expects receivers Jaxon Smith-Nijgba and Julian Fleming to both play against Toledo on Saturday night - assuming both continue on their current recovery from injury. The Ohio State coach said Smith-Njigba, the program's single-season record holder for receiving yards, is "further along than he was at this point last week" in his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury. "We'll see how this week goes," Day said. "We'll only put him in the game if we're 100% sure he's ready to roll." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has not yet been ruled out for Saturday's game against Arkansas State, according to Ohio State football coach Ryan Day. In an appearance on Big Ten Network on Monday afternoon, Day said the team is "hoping to have him back this Saturday." Smith-Njigba missed much of the season-opening victory over Notre Dame after suffering an apparent leg injury on the Buckeyes' second offensive series. Day did not specify the nature of the Big Ten single-season receiving yardage record-holder's injury. A 24/7 Sports report Sunday night characterized it as a low-grade hamstring injury that might require multiple weeks' absence. Smith-Njigba managed only two receptions for 3 yards against Notre Dame. He attempted to return to the game after missing a few series, but shut it down for the night early in the third quarter. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 1: 6. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jr, WR, Ohio State, 6-0, 198,...Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a potential Heisman Trophy contender and the top-rated receiver on NFL Draft Scout, is expected to miss a game or two due to a low-grade hamstring injury Saturday in the No. 2 Buckeyes' season-opening, 21-10, victory against Notre Dame. Smith-Njigba will undergo an MRI this week to confirm the low-grade diagnosis, but the junior reportedly had good range of motion in initial tests. The junior from Rockwall, Texas led Ohio State with 95 catches for 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns in 2021. His absence will leave a hole for Ohio State as Smith-Njigba is the only receiver on the Buckeyes' roster who posted more than 200 receiving yards last season. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, a potential Heisman Trophy contender and Draft Scout’s top-rated receiver - sixth overall - took a hit Saturday in the first quarter that popped his helmet off. He returned for a series in the second quarter but by the third quarter he was out of the game and finished with two catches for three years. The hit occurred on the first play of Ohio State's drive with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter against Notre Dame, when Smith-Njigba caught a 4-yard pass from quarterback C.J. Stroud. Notre Dame's Cam Hart and Brandon Joseph were credited with the tackle, which ended out of bounds as Smith-Njigba's helmet flew off and he landed awkwardly. Smith-Njigba didn't immediately return to the game. ESPN reporter Holly Rowe said on the broadcast Smith-Njigba was talking about the back of his left knee and his hamstring. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

Jaxon Smith-Njigba went from being the third wheel among Ohio State football's starting wide receivers to having the best statistical season in program history. Now he's back for Year 3 in 2022, and there's really only one question: Can he top it? Smith-Njigba is C.J. Stroud's best and favorite weapon while also playing in the slot, which has routinely been a high-usage spot in the Buckeyes' offense. As the only returning starter in the wide receiver room, that could be taken to another level.

Nevada's Trevor Insley is the only player to eclipse 2,000 yards in a season when he did it in 1999. His 2,060 yards were 454 more than Smith-Njigba. But by potentially playing two more games this season, it's not crazy to think he could top that total. Doing so is at the very least at the back of his mind heading into the season. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about it," Smith-Njigba said. "I think about everything, honestly. I don't try to let it control me. I try to control what I can control, and that's me showing up Saturdays and pouring my heart out." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

For the first time in five years, Ohio State football does not enter the season as the defending Big Ten champion. Another streak continues, though, as the Buckeyes remain the favorite to reclaim their crown. Per 36 voters in the 12th annual cleveland.com preseason Big Ten football poll, OSU was the unanimous choice to win both the East Division and the conference championship game in Indianapolis. Ohio State is the first unanimous preseason favorite since 2015, when it was also picked to win the league as the defending national champion. This is the third straight season Ohio State was picked to win the league. It followed through in 2020, but a loss to Michigan in the 2021 regular-season finale ended a four-year run as champion. Quarterback C.J. Stroud was the clear pick for preseason offensive player of the year, and receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba finished second. Four Buckeyes received preseason defensive player of the year votes. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football had no finalists last season for the Biletnikoff Award - given to the nation's best receiver. Not Garrett Wilson or Chris Olave, who were both selected in the first 12 picks of April's NFL Draft. Not Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who rocketed past both veterans to turn in the most prolific receiving season in OSU history. Call it bad voting. Call it an unfortunate case of teammates cannibalizing each other's votes. Regardless, it continued a Buckeye trend with the award.

Terry Glenn won the Biletnikoff Award in 1995, it's second year of existence. He is also the only OSU finalist (top-three vote-getter) in the history of the award. David Boston, Michael Jenkins, Santonio Holmes, Parris Campbell - some pretty talented pass-catchers could not break through. Smith-Njigba, who was announced Thursday as one of 43 receivers on the watch list for the 2022 award, might have the best chance of any of them to break the drought. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Enters the 2022 season as one of the top receivers in college football - if not the top receiver - and a candidate for national honors.   Jaxon Smith-Njigba broke Ohio State football's single-season records for catches and receiving yards last season and comes back for more in 2022. Even in a receiver room as talented as the Buckeyes', Smith-Njigba stands alone as the clear No. 1 target for C.J. Stroud at the start of the season. How rare is that in recent OSU history? You need to wind back two full decades to find the last time any OSU receiver had such a clear claim to the No. 1 spot.

Michael Jenkins turned 61 receptions in to 1,076 yards and six touchdowns in 2002. Chris Gamble finished a distant second in receptions (31) and yards (499) and did not catch a single touchdown pass. Obviously that Buckeye offense, leaning on running back Maurice Clarett and quarterback Craig Krenzel, operated on a different dynamic than the one C.J. Stroud will lead in 2022. At the same time, that heirarchy in the receiver room did not prevent Ohio State from winning a national championship. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football standout Jaxon Smith-Njigba is expected to be among the top NFL draft prospects next season. Some even have Ohio State's record-breaking receiver as the first receiver taken in the 2023 NFL draft. But he won't beat his brother to the big leagues. Smith-Njigba's older brother Canaan Smith-Njigba is likely to make his Major League Baseball debut this week for the Pittsburgh Pirates. According to reports, the Pirates, who entered the week in third place in the National League Central standings with a 24-34 record, are calling up the 23-year-old outfielder. Canaan Smith-Njigba was a star at Rockwall-Heath High School in the Dallas, Texas, area, while Jaxon Smith-Njigba attended Rockwall High School. - Columbus Dispatch

Jaxon Smith-Njigba could be highest-drafted OSU WR since Terry Glenn. He finished with 95 catches for 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns in 2001. The receiving yards are the most in a season for a Buckeye, breaking David Boston's record. Smith-Njigba had already broken Boston's then single-game reception record of 15 earlier in the 2021 season against Nebraska. He matched that mark in the Rose Bowl.

If Smith-Njigba is selected in the top five of the 2023 NFL draft, he would be the first Buckeye to be selected in the top five. The highest-drafted receiver in Ohio State history was Terry Glenn, who was selected No. 7 by the New England Patriots in 1996. Smith-Njigba broke Glenn's Ohio State single-game receiving yards record in the Rose Bowl. He also broke a 37-year old Cris Carter bowl game reception record. If selected in the top 15 of the first round, it would mean the 2021 Ohio State Buckeyes had three future top-15 picks at receiver. - Columbus Dispatch

C.J. Stroud and Jaxon Smith-Njigba put on a passing performance that obliterated a multitude of records during one of the biggest offensive days in Ohio State's storied history. The Buckeyes still barely did enough to hold off resilient Utah and its backup quarterback in one spectacular Rose Bowl. Stroud capped his record-setting offensive day by leading a 56-yard drive ending in Noah Ruggles' 19-yard field goal with nine seconds to play, and No. 7 Ohio State beat No. 10 Utah 48-45 on Saturday night in the wild 108th edition of the Rose Bowl. Stroud passed for a school-record 573 yards and a record-tying six touchdowns for the Buckeyes (11-2), who won the Granddaddy of Them All for the second time in four years while toppling one long-standing offensive record after another.

Stroud's yards passing and touchdowns both are Rose Bowl records, and he finished 3 yards shy of the record for yards passing in any bowl game. "It's emotional for me," said Stroud, from nearby Rancho Cucamonga. "It's like I'm dreaming right now. I was able to come home and win the Rose Bowl like this...This is the Rose Bowl, man. This is where the legendary games are being played." Ohio State created a few more legends on this trip. Smith-Njigba set the record for any FBS bowl game with 347 yards receiving while catching a school-record 15 passes and scoring three touchdowns. Marvin Harrison Jr. also caught three TD passes for the Buckeyes, who set a Rose Bowl and school bowl record with 683 total yards. - Ohio State/AP College Football

The Ohio bill granting name, image and likeness income rights to college athletes, including those at Ohio State, passed out of committee Tuesday and moves on to the full senate. The Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee unanimously approved SB 187. State Senator Niraj Antani, Republican of Miamisburg, introduced the bill on May 24. Ohio State coach Ryan Day attended Tuesday's committee meeting and testified in favor of the bill. If approved by the full senate, the bill moves on to the House of Representatives for the same process. If approved by the house, the bill goes to Governor Mike DeWine for signature into law.

The legislative process around the bill has come with true urgency. Several other states had already passed NIL compensation bills set to go into effect on July 1 before the Ohio bill was introduced. The NCAA has not passed its own legislation to govern the issue. U.S. senators and representatives - including former OSU football player Anthony Gonzalez - have introduced bills and held hearings. "Today, we took a big step forward in advancing the rights of student athletes in Ohio," Antani said in a news release. "This bill restores the right of each student athlete to their own name, image, and likeness. I look forward to working to pass this through the full Senate." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
