  12/19/22 - RB *Bijan RobinsonJr/2023, Texas, 5-11, 215 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Texas running back Bijan Robinson is skipping his final two seasons of eligibility to enter the NFL draft and won't play in the Alamo Bowl. Robinson earned All-America honors after rushing for 1,580 yards with 18 touchdowns as the Longhorns (8-4) finished third in the Big 12. No. 21 Texas plays 12th-ranked Washington in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. Robinson played three years but had two seasons of eligibility remaining because his freshman year was the COVID-19-altered 2020 season. The NCAA granted all players another year of eligibility.

"I've done everything that I tried to do in God's plan for me while I've been here," Robinson said at a news conference announcing the decision Monday. "It's time to start the new journey. I'm just excited to figure out another part of my life, just like I tried to figure it out here." Highly recruited out of Arizona, Robinson is fourth on Texas' career rushing list with 3,410 yards rushing. He trails two Heisman Trophy winners in career school rushing leader Ricky Williams and Earl Campbell, who is third. All three of the Texas running backs ahead of Robinson on the career list were top-five picks in the draft. Williams went fifth overall to New Orleans in 1999, Cedric Benson was taken fourth by Chicago in 2005 and Campbell was the No. 1 overall choice by Houston in 1978. - AP College Football

While stumping for Bijan Robinson's Heisman Trophy candidacy Monday, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian rattled off a bunch of statistics. Robinson has accounted for 1,894 yards of offense this season. That's the most in college football. The junior running back has scored 20 touchdowns. Only Pitt's Israel Abanikanda has more. And Robinson has rushed for 1,580 yards and 18 touchdowns, both of which lead the Big 12. "If we were 10-2 right now and playing for a Big 12 championship and maybe on the cusp of the College Football Playoff, I think there'd be no question this guy would be in New York for the Heisman," Sarkisian said. - Austin American Statesman

NOV 28 BIG 12 CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bijan Robinson, UT, RB, Jr.,...Robinson rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns in leading Texas to a 38-27 win over Baylor with 150 of those yards coming in the second half, including 115 in the fourth quarter while the game was in the balance. Both of Robinson's touchdowns gave Texas the lead with the first providing a 14-9 advantage in the first quarter, and the second putting the Longhorns ahead for good at 31-27 midway through the fourth quarter. It was his ninth 100-yard rushing game in the last 10 outings. He has rushed for a touchdown in 10-of-12 games this year.

Robinson is the only player in the nation this season with more than 1,500 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards, and he is also the first in the storied tradition of Longhorn running backs to accomplish that feat in a single season. He leads the nation in tandem yards (1,894) and is second in total touchdowns (20). His 1,580 rushing yards make him just the sixth player in UT history to reach 1,500 in a season. He is also one of just two running backs nationally with double-digit rushing touchdowns and at least two receiving scores. His 18 rushing touchdowns this season are the fourth-most nationally, and the fifth-most in a single season on Texas record. It brings his career touchdown totals to 41 overall (fourth all-time at UT) and 33 rushing (eight all-time at UT). - Big 12 Football

  11/25/22 - RB *Bijan RobinsonJr/2023, Texas, 5-11, 215 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Bijan Robinson rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns, Jaylan Ford made his fourth interception of the season, and No. 24 Texas defeated Baylor 38-27 on Friday. The Longhorns (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) kept alive their chances of making the conference title game. If Kansas can beat No. 15 Kansas State on Saturday, Texas will face No. 4 TCU for the Big 12 championship. Robinson, who carried 29 times, gained 65 of Texas' 75 yards on its go-ahead drive, scoring from the 1 to give the Longhorns a 31-27 lead with 8:25 remaining. On Baylor's next possession, Ford intercepted a pass by Blake Shapen, tying a Texas record for picks in a season by a linebacker. The Longhorns converted the turnover into a 42-yard touchdown drive, the final 11 on a run by Robinson's backup, Roschon Johnson. He finished with 13 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Baylor trailed by five early in the fourth quarter when Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers dropped back from his 33. A blitzing Al Walcott forced a fumble. Lineman Gabe Hall scooped up the ball and ran 16 yards for a touchdown. A 2-point conversion put Baylor ahead 27-24.

Baylor (6-6, 4-5) sacked Ewers five times. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 194 yards. Baylor made a quick move toward ruining the Longhorns' senior day celebration. First the Bears pressured Ewers into a safety when he was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone. Then Shapen connected with Jaylen Ellis for a 47-yard touchdown and a 9-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Ellis caught only one other pass this season before that one, a 50-yarder. But Texas responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive that Ewers, not much of a runner, finished with a 3-yard burst up the middle. Baylor punter Issac Power contributed to the Texas cause with an 11-yard shank, and the Longhorns needed to only travel 29 yards for a second score. There was an exchange of field goals, and a 45-yard Baylor touchdown drive that required just five plays and 32 seconds. Shapen finished with a 14-yard pass to tight end Ben Sims for a 19-17 halftime lead. Texas put itself in danger with three false starts and a lost fumble by Jordan Whittington early in the third quarter. But a determined Whittington turned a short pass into a 19-yard gain, setting up a 1-yard score by Johnson late in the period. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football

NOV 21 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bijan Robinson, UT, RB, Jr.,...Robinson rushed for a career-high 243 yards on 25 carries (9.7 ypc) and a career-best four touchdowns in leading Texas to a 55-14 road victory over Kansas. It was his eighth 100-yard rushing game in the last nine outings and second of 200 in the last three. He's also has rushed for a touchdown in nine of 11 games this year. Robinson is now tied for fifth on Texas' all-time rushing list with 3,231 yards. The junior is sixth in UT history in career tandem yards (4,036) and 10th in all-purpose yards (4,052).

This season, Robinson is the only player in the nation with more than 1,400 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards, and one of just two running backs nationally with double-digit rushing touchdowns and at least two receiving scores. In the game against Kansas, Robinson scored four of Texas' first five touchdowns in pushing the Longhorns out to a 38-0 lead early in the third quarter. Two of the touchdowns went for more than 15 yards, including his last one of 32 yards. Just before halftime, he had a 24-yard carry that was inches short of a touchdown with one second remaining before he vaulted over the line on the next play as time expired for a 31-0 halftime lead. Robinson's 32-yard touchdown run was his sixth rushing touchdown and seventh scoring play of at least 30 yards this season. His 243 yards rushing were the 16th-most in a game in UT history. - Big 12 Football

Bijan Robinson ran for career-highs of 243 yards and four touchdowns, helping Texas earn a bit of revenge against Kansas with a 55-14 victory Saturday that kept alive the Longhorns' hopes of playing for the Big 12 championship. The Longhorns (7-4, 5-3), who lost a 57-56 overtime thriller to the Jayhawks a year ago in Austin, need to beat Baylor next weekend while, coincidentally, getting some help from Kansas. The Jayhawks (6-5, 3-5) must also beat Kansas State in their rivalry game for Texas to play fourth-ranked TCU in the title game in Arlington. Quinn Ewers added 107 yards passing and a touchdown, and Jonathon Brooks ran for 108 yards and two scores, as the Longhorns bounced back from a dismal game against the Horned Frogs in which they didn't score an offensive touchdown. They scored on nine straight possessions after an opening punt and finished with 427 yards rushing. The Jayhawks' Jalon Daniels, starting for the first time since a shoulder injury six weeks ago, threw for 230 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Devin Neal ran 13 times for 51 yards. Robinson, who was held to 29 yards rushing by the Horned Frogs, eclipsed that total midway through the first quarter Saturday, then kept on going. He bulldozed into the end zone from 2-yards out to give the Longhorns the lead, then ripped off two long runs on their next possession to extend the advantage to 14-0. Robinson nearly had a third first-half TD run, but it was called back by a penalty and Texas had to kick a field goal. The Jayhawks were hoping to get a boost from the return of Daniels, who had them off to a 5-0 start before his injury on Oct. 8. But they went 3-and-out on their first two drives, failed on fourth-and-2 on the next one, then had a TD wiped out by a penalty and watched Jacob Borcila miss the ensuing field-goal try. Ewers added a touchdown pass to Keilan Robinson later in the second quarter. And after Daniels was picked off by Jaylan Ford, the Longhorns turned again to Robinson, who appeared to have scurried 25 yards for a touchdown but was ruled out at the 1-yard line with 1 second left in the half - then leapt over the pile on the next play anyway. Robinson had 172 yards and three touchdowns as Texas took a 31-0 lead to the locker room. - Texas/AP College Football

  11/05/22 - RB *Bijan RobinsonJr/2023, Texas, 5-11, 215 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Bijan Robinson romped for 209 yards and a touchdown, Quinn Ewers threw for 197 yards and two more scores, and Texas held off No. 13 Kansas State 34-27 on Saturday night for the Longhorns' sixth straight win over the Wildcats. Xavier Worthy had two touchdown catches and Roschon Johnson added a TD run for the Longhorns (6-3, 4-2 Big 12), who built a 31-10 halftime lead and then had to make a defensive stand in the closing minutes to preserve the victory. The Wildcats (6-3, 4-2) stuffed Robinson on third down with 4:26 left to get the ball back, and Adrian Martinez quickly moved them close to midfield. But after converting fourth down with a pass to Deuce Vaughn with 34 seconds to go, the senior quarterback - back in the lineup after an injury - fumbled the ball away.

Martinez threw for 329 yards and two TDs, but he also threw an interception that turned into a Texas touchdown and had the fumble the clinched the game. Vaughn had 73 yards rushing along with 86 yards and a touchdown receiving. Kansas State has not beaten the Longhorns since 2016. The momentum swung to Texas on the fourth play of the game, when Kansas State's Julius Brents earned a questionable targeting penalty, taking the Wildcats' best cover cornerback off the field for the rest of the game. The Longhorns proceeded to reel off three straight touchdown drives, all going eight plays and 75 yards. Robinson capped the first with a 36-yard run, Johnson finished the second from nine yards out, and Worthy capitalized on Brents' absence by hauling in the first of his two first-half TDs to give the Longhorns a 21-10 lead. The only time the Kansas State defense got off the field came when Johnson fumbled at the end of a 37-yard gain. But the Wildcats promptly punted away, Texas added a field goal, and then Martinez was picked off in the closing minutes to set up Worthy's second touchdown reception and extend the lead to 31-10 at halftime. The Longhorns had 352 yards of offense by that point. Robinson had 161 on the ground, the best half of his sterling career. - Texas/AP College Football

Bijan Robinson ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns, Jahdae Barron returned an interception 44 yards for a score in the third quarter and No. 21 Texas beat UTSA 41-20 on Saturday night. Texas trailed 17-7 in the second quarter then rallied to tie it by halftime. Robinson's 78-yard touchdown run gave Texas the lead, and Barron's interception return put the Longhorns up by 11 to snuff the Roadrunners' bid for an upset that would have been the biggest win in the history of a rising program that has only been playing football since 2011.

Hudson Card got the start at quarterback for Texas (2-1) in place of the injured Quinn Ewers. Card had his own struggles with an ankle sprain during the week and wasn't announced as the starter until game time. He still finished with 161 yards passing and even scampered for a 32-yard run in the fourth quarter. Texas jumped into the national rankings on the strength of its close loss a week earlier to then-No. 1 Alabama, but found itself quickly down by 10 as UTSA (1-2) followed a surprise onside kick with a trick play touchdown pass to Zakhari Franklin. Texas eventually wore down the Roadrunners, last season's C-USA champions behind a rushing attack that rolled up 298 yards. Robinson put the game out of reach with a 41-yard touchdown run with 9:36 left that made it 38-20. - Texas/AP College Football

Texas running back Bijan Robinson is a prime example of a player taking full advantage of his NIL opportunities. The Heisman hopeful has built an impressive portfolio of NIL deals over the past calendar year. Robinson is working with Lamborghini, Raising Cane's, C4 Energy and many more notable brands. His latest NIL deal might be his best one yet. We have seen a fair share of creative NIL deals in this new era of college sports but this one might take the cake. "Bijan Mustardson" is now available for anyone to purchase. It is sure to be a popular condiment at Texas Longhorn tailgates in the fall. - Longhorns Wire

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Bijan Robinson (Jr.), Texas,...Former NFL Draft Scout analyst Dane Brugler, now with The Athletic, rates Bijan Robinson (6-0, 220) as the best running back prospect in the 2023 draft and says he would have been the top back picked in 2022. Says Brugler: "He established himself as one of the best backs in the country from day one, averaging 8.2 yards as a true freshman (2020)...finishing with 1,127 rushing yards last year as a sophomore...Robinson is a special back for several reasons - most of all, his ability to force missed tackles due to his unique mix of elusiveness and power. He is a one-cut maestro with the twitchy reflexes in his lower body to start-stop in a blink and leave broken tackles all over the field. Robinson's burst allows him to accelerate rapidly, and he runs with the physicality to keep his balance through contact…. Robinson is at his best on zone-stretch and outside runs, where his field vision and cutback burst helps him create. Robinson shows dynamic skills as a pass catcher, both out of the backfield and lined up in the slot. His elusiveness translates well to the passing game, and he can dust coverage on hitches or angle routes...He also needs to show better attention to detail as a pass blocker." Aw, cmon Dane why waste him as a blocker when he can be a dangerous outlet receiver. - Frank Cooney, Draft Scout & The Athletic

Texas running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson along with linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and defensive end Ovie Oghoufu will represent the Longhorns at the league's annual pre-season media event in Arlington. Robinson was also named the Big 12's preseason offensive player of the year on Wednesday, according to the league office. The junior has rushed for 1,830 yards the last two seasons with 15 touchdowns. He also averages 12 yards per reception.

Receiver Xavier Worthy and Overshown also received preseason All-Big 12 attention. Robinson and Worthy were both named to the preseason offensive team while Overshown was put on the preseason defensive team. The Horns sure have plenty to talk about as last season's 5-7 campaign is fully in the rearview mirror. In addition to quarterback Quinn Ewers' transfer and 2023 freshman Arch Manning's commitment, Texas players will likely face multiple questions about UT's hopeful resurgence in coach Steve Sarkisian's second season. - Austin American Statesman

Poised for a 2022 standout season: Quarterback will drive the narrative for the Longhorns, but junior running back Bijan Robinson will drive the offense. He was one of the top backs in the country in 2021 before his season was cut short by a dislocated elbow in a loss to Kansas. Robinson had 1,422 yards from scrimmage and 16 TDs last season and will likely be mentioned in some early Heisman Trophy conversations. He's also bulked up to 220 pounds heading into what will likely be his final college season. Robinson will run behind a young and inexperienced offensive line. - AP College Football

Star Texas running back Bijan Robinson will miss the rest of the season after dislocating his elbow in the Longhorns' loss to Kansas, coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday. Robinson's 1,127 yards rushing this season rank third in the Big 12 and made him the first Texas running back to hit the 1,000-yard mark since 2016. He also had 11 rushing touchdowns, and five more receiving. Robinson was injured in the third quarter of the 57-56 overtime loss that sent Texas to its fifth consecutive defeat, the program's longest skid since 1956. Texas (4-6, 2-5 Big 12) plays Saturday at West Virginia and at home Nov. 27 against Kansas State, and must win both to be eligible for a bowl game.   Bijan Robinson ran six consecutive times to open the final game-cinching drive for Texas, including a first down on a hard third-down run after TCU had called its last timeout. He then added 13 more yards before Casey Thompson got to kneel down on the last three snaps. Robinson ran for a career-high 216 yards on 35 carries with two go-ahead touchdowns and those key late first downs in a 32-27 win Saturday, the first Big 12 road game for the Longhorns since accepting an invitation to join the Southeastern Conference. "I just knew I had to get that first down, for the whole team to keep going forward and end the game," Robinson said. "No. 5 kind of epitomized our football team, the grit. He was exhausted," coach Steve Sarkisian said. "Thirty-five carries later, the last one was the most important one to get one more first down to seal the win...He's earned our trust." Thompson improved to 3-0 as the starting quarterback, even without the Longhorns finding the end zone at the same blistering pace as in his first two starts.

He finished 12-of-22 passing for 142 yards with a touchdown and an interception. TCU (2-2, 0-1) lost its second consecutive home game and had three turnovers, matching its total for the first three games. The Longhorns converted those into only three field goals by Cameron Dicker. Robinson was stopped short on a fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 9 1/2 minutes left. The Horned Frogs then went 99 yards in 13 plays for Kendre Miller's 2-yard TD with 4:23 left, but never got the ball back. - Texas/AP College Football

The Steve Sarkisian era is off to a good start at Texas behind a new quarterback and a running back finally getting his chance to carry the load for the Longhorns. Bijan Robinson scored twice and Hudson Card threw two touchdown passes in his first career start, leading No. 21 Texas to a 38-18 victory over No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday in Sarkisian's Longhorns coaching debut . "I love it man, there's nothing like winning," said Sarkisian, a former head coach at Washington and Southern California who was Alabama's offensive coordinator last season when the Crimson Tide won the national championship. Texas hired him to replace Tom Herman, who was fired after four winning seasons and four bowl wins but no Big 12 championships.

Robinson, who has garnered early attention as a potential all-American this season, scored Texas' first touchdown on a pass from Card in the first quarter, then punched in another on a 7-yard run on the first possession of the third that put Texas ahead 21-6. Robinson finished with 176 total yards rushing and receiving in the kind of all-around game Sarkisian had promised to use. He touched the ball 24 times Saturday, more than double his game average last season. "Sark said to prepare for anything. I feel good," said Robinson, who also met former Texas Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams before the game. "He (Williams) just said, 'Go ball out and represent for the guys who have been here before you,'" Robinson said. - Texas/AP College Football

Robinson, a 6-foot, 215-pound sophomore, was also named to the Maxwell Award watch list, which is given to the best player in college football.   Texas fired football coach Tom Herman on Saturday after four seasons of failing to win a Big 12 championship and only one league title game appearance. Herman still had three seasons left on a guaranteed contract that was due to pay him more than $6 million per year, and the move means Texas will soon be on its fourth head coach since its last Big 12 title in 2009 under Mack Brown.

Herman was supposed to end that drought. He was college football's hottest young coach when Texas brought him from Houston to replace Charlie Strong in 2016. But Herman's results never matched his swagger: He never had a losing season and won four bowl games at Texas, including last week's Alamo Bowl. But he couldn't return the Longhorns to consistent league or national title contenders. He was just 1-4 against the archrival Oklahoma and leaves Texas 32-18 overall. - AP College Football

Casey Thompson passed for 170 yards and four touchdowns and No. 20 Texas overcame an injury to senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger and beat Colorado 55-23 in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night. Freshman running back Bijan Robinson had 183 yards on 10 carries with a TD for Texas (7-3). The Longhorns are undefeated in five bowl games under Tom Herman. Ehlinger missed the second half after sustaining a shoulder injury in second quarter.

He returned to the field in the third quarter in warmups, with his right arm in a sling. There was no immediate word on the extent of Ehlinger's injury. Ehlinger played the entire first half, completing 10 of 16 passes for 160 yards and a score. Colorado was playing its sixth game of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Pac-12 initially canceled its season only to reverse the decision and delay the start until Nov. 7. The Buffaloes (4-2) had two games canceled due to virus issues, but competed in the Alamo Bowl despite failing to reach the traditional six win threshold required for the postseason due to this season's unusual circumstances. - AP College Football

With the close of the regular season, I want to reiterate that Tom Herman is our coach," athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement released by the school.   Bijan Robinson did not practice on Sunday, but Texas coach Tom Herman said his freshman running back is "moving around pretty good." Robinson left Saturday's game at Texas Tech following the scary conclusion to an 11-yard reception. As he looked for more yardage on the play, Robinson attempted to hurdle a Red Raider. Robinson did not clear the linebacker and he landed on his neck after another defender hit him in the air. After the 63-56 win, Herman said that Robinson suffered a strain in his back. Texas now hopes to have him practicing by Tuesday or Wednesday. The top-rated running back in the 2020 recruiting class, Robinson has rushed for 50 yards on nine carries this season. "I don't know medically how he is OK after that, after seeing the still shots of it and whatnot," Herman said on Monday. "Probably a testament to his athleticism and fluidity." - Austin American Statesman

Mesquite Poteet linebacker Malik Jefferson was the most-hyped recruit UT signed on Charlie Strong's watch. Robinson earns that distinction thus far for Tom Herman. The running back from Tucson, Ariz., was a high school All-American and two-time state player of the year. He also set a new state rushing record with 7,036 yards. The five-star prospect was the No. 1-ranked running back recruit in the country, according to 247Sports' composite ratings. He's not likely to be the opening-game starter against UTEP. He may not even be second in the rotation. All freshmen must earn their spot through practice, and in Herman's world, everyone must protect the football at all costs. Other recent freshmen have come in with great fanfare. Injuries slowed Jordan Whittington. Jake Smith had to wait his turn. But Robinson is someone that fans will get to know soon. He's simply too electric. - Austin American Statesman
