ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 18. Myles Murphy, DE, Clemson, Junior. Notable 2021 stats: 37 tackles (21 solo), 7 sacks. Last year's ranking: 25. It's possible the biggest obstacle to Murphy's dominance at defensive end is that he has to share the wealth with so many other talented linemen at Clemson. Still, Murphy is the best of the bunch, finishing last season with seven sacks, 14 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and 12 runs stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage. Murphy is a future first-round pick anchoring a line that might have two or three of them. - ESPN.com

  08/25/22 - DE *Myles MurphyJr/2023, Clemson, 6-5, 268 (DS#4 DE) + More +

Myles Murphy stands 6-5, 278 pounds, but the Clemson defensive end aims to keep his head below the clouds. The junior, who finds himself mentioned among the top NFL draft prospects for 2023, will politely shrug off questions about the next step. It doesn't matter what a mock draft says. Murphy's father recently reminded him that Georgia defensive end Travon Walker wasn't even projected as a top prospect coming into the '21 season - and he just went No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars in April. "A lot of those mock drafts, they can be right," Murphy said. "But most of them are incorrect." Still, some of the same freakish athletic traits that shot Walker up the board - at 6-5, 272 pounds - are undoubtedly present in Murphy.

His size, his power, his surprisingly nimble feet. Along with mock drafts, Murphy's name appeared on national college football analyst Bruce Feldman's list of the top "freaks" in the sport, citing the Clemson defensive end's 405-pound bench press, 505-pound deadlift and a 40-yard dash time clocked in the high 4.5-second range. Murphy can't deny it all - or what it means. "I'm even faster, honestly," Murphy said. "In high school, I got a 4.53, a 4.51, something like that. Haven't run a 40 since then. So we'll see. We'll see during the combine or whatever." As a former five-star recruit, it's been long-suspected Murphy's journey would eventually intersect with the NFL. Barring the unexpected, he will find himself in Indianapolis in late February, verifying that 40 time for NFL scouts. Murphy's highlight reel from the 2022 season will be utilized to evaluate how his freakish traits translate to a football field. - Charleston Post Courier

No other freshman Tiger had more tackles last year than Myles Murphy. The former five-star recruit totaled 51 tackles, 12 for loss, four quarterback sacks and a pass breakup in 12 games played with six starts, earning freshman All-American honors. He's one of only four Tigers players to garner the accolade in the past six years while also being named the Associated Press' ACC Co-Newcomer of the Year. Now as a sophomore, he'll have a chance to earn a full-time starting position, but it won't be easy with other linemen like Thomas, redshirt juniors KJ Henry and Justin Mascoll, as well as senior Justin Foster also in the running. He's had a good fall camp so far and must continue to take those positive strides in the right direction to back up a stellar freshman campaign. - The State

For the past four years, Joe Gerda watched Myles Murphy dominate on the high school level. Gerda was Murphy's defensive line coach at Hillgrove High School in Georgia and watched the soft-spoken defensive end become the school's latest superstar. Hillgrove produced current NFL players Bradley Chubb (Cleveland Browns), Evan Engram (New York Giants) and Kenyan Drake (Arizona Cardinals). But Gerda wasn't sure what to expect when he turned on the TV Saturday to watch Murphy in his Clemson debut against Wake Forest. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Murphy was that same dominant player Gerda watched so many times, leading the Tigers with seven tackles (three for loss) and two sacks in the 37-13 victory. "I was very surprised to see the stat line," Gerda said. "His ability to get rid of blocks so quickly at the college level was a surprise to me. He was always able to do that at the high school level. He was a man among boys. But to do it against Wake Forest and grown men is pretty impressive." Murphy, who talked with reporters this week for the first time since arriving at Clemson in January, admitted he had first-game jitters, but they went away after the first few plays. He played 29 snaps, fourth most along the Tigers' defensive line Saturday. "The first drive I was nervous. After you make first contact on the field, it gets out of your body," Murphy said. "The rest of the game felt like high school ball and doing what I do on the field." - The State

Murphy, a defensive end the No. 7 prospect in the country, led the team with seven tackles - three of those for loss - and two sacks. He was the first Clemson true freshman to record multiple sacks in a game since Dexter Lawrence against Virginia Tech in the 2016 ACC Championship. "Bresee and Myles Murphy showed up pretty quick and I expected that," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. There have been high expectations for Bresee and Murphy since they arrived on campus in January. The two were part of the 2020 Tigers' recruiting class ranked No. 3 by 247Sports Composite and one that Swinney called a "special group" on early signing day back in December. - The State
