Oregon's depth at nickel and boundary cornerback is being tested early in fall camp amid the indefinite suspensions of Jamal Hill and DJ James. The players who were behind the returning and projected starters, including Dontae Manning and Bennett Williams with the first-team and true freshmen Jaylin Davies and Jeffrey Bassa with the second-team, have gotten positive reviews in their first two days of fall camp. "Those four guys in the first two days have really done a nice job," defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter said. "They had opportunities to make some plays and they've made them. It's fun to see Dontae really jump in, get more reps so that you can see the explosiveness out of his cuts. Jeff Bassa had a chance to have his hand on a ball yesterday. Bennett Williams really understands, is starting to play fast now. I think he's starting to play with more confidence. Jaylin, he's starting to figure it out a little bit more. When you first come in as a freshman, it all comes at your fast. "All those guys got to step up for us because in football you never know who's got to be called up." Manning and Williams each ended the spring with the first-team defense. After missing last season due to injury, Manning had four tackles with an interception during the spring game. Williams had two tackles and a pass breakup in the May 1 scrimmage. - The Oregonian

In light of DJ James and Jamal Hill facing charges from allegedly shooting an airsoft gun at three people Tuesday night in downtown Eugene, suddenly there's some uncertainty in the secondary. Manning was behind James in the spring and had four tackles and an interception while with the starting defense during the spring game. If James is facing the loss of playing time, Manning could end up opening the season as the starter at boundary cornerback. - The Oregonian
