Kansas linebackers coach Chris Simpson didn't hesitate when asked for an assessment on the development of junior Taiwan Berryhill. "Most improved in the room, period," Simpson said Wednesday. "It's not even close, in my opinion." Berryhill played in all 12 games for the Jayhawks last season, started four of them and finished with 31 tackles. Three of those starts were in the first three games, though he played 410 snaps all season in what was essentially a four-player rotation that also included Nate Be tts, Rich Miller and Gavin Potter.Simpson's belief comes from what he has seen from Berryhill during training camp practices. The Jayhawks concluded their eighth such practice on Wednesday. "There were moments a year ago where he would be frustrat ed in the middle of a play and almost stop in the middle of a play," Simpson said. "That's not happening. He'll go and get it now. Most improved, by far. I'm really excited to see. And he's still a young guy now. I'm really excited to see what Taiwan can do for us moving forward." Berryhill said Simpson's recollections were accurate. "It was just, like, frustrating that I didn't know the playbook and things would happen that would be too quick for me and I'd just get stuck," he said. "I'd sit there conf used and get frustrated with myself - not with anybody else, but just myself: "(Come on), Taiwan. You've got to know this. You've got to see this." - Lawrence Journal World

The Kansas football defense could end up relying a lot on a pair of relatively new inside linebackers this year. Between former safety Nate Betts switching positions during the offseason and Taiwan Berryhill moving inside late during his freshman year, t he Jayhawks hope those two can bolster a group that also includes junior Gavin Potter, junior Nick Channel, senior Jay Dineen and redshirt freshman Krishawn Brown. "We're coming along," Berryhill, a sophomore from New Orleans, said of the group's progres s this spring, adding it helped that the players came in well conditioned. "We're starting to get used to the defense, getting more comfortable. Every day we're getting better, day by day."As a true freshman in 2020, Berryhill didn't play at all d uring KU's first four games. But as the linebacking corps became depleted, the Jayhawks needed him late in the season, so much so that he ended up starting in the finale at Texas Tech. He was still new to playing inside linebacker at the college level - and adjusting on the fly - at that point. But Berryhill told reporters this week that he feels much more confident in his role now, a few weeks into spring practices. "I've grown as a linebacker," Berryhill said. - Lawrence Journal World
