On Thursday, Mataio Soli explained what he and some of the approximate 25 newcomers on defense could bring to the University of Hawaii football team as it looks to replace nine defensive starters from 2021 before its Week 0 game against Vanderbilt on Aug . 27. "All of us bring our own different uniqueness to the team," Soli said. "As long as we stay together like we have been all summer and right now, fall camp as you can see, I think we're going to have some good results this fall." Soli, a 6-foot-4 def ensive lineman from Douglasville, Ga., and a transfer from Arkansas, is one of 18 players on the team's fall camp roster who transferred from FBS schools.UH linebacker Penei Pavihi - a former teammate of Soli's from youth league football in Americ an Samoa - was Soli's host on his recruiting visit. The program's Island Day spring game also contributed to his decision to commit to Hawaii. "It was a great experience for me, I seen how (it) brought in everybody," Soli said. "I seen how close the team was. It really brought everything together." "I love this defense. I feel like our defense is going to surprise a lot of people," Soli said. A former 4-star pass rusher who played three seasons at Arkansas is transferring to the University of Hawaii football team. Mataio Soli told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he will join the Rainbow Warriors this summer and have two seasons of NCAA eligibili ty remaining. "It just felt like the best fit for me," said Soli, who visited UH a week ago. "I had a great time. I felt (Hawaii) had a family atmosphere...I felt I was already on the team when I got there." Soli, who is 6 feet 4 and 235 pounds, was a st andout defender at Georgia's Douglas County High. As a junior, he amassed 18 sacks. As a senior in 2018, he made 84 tackles, including 22.5 sacks. Rivals and 247Sports gave him 4-star ratings; 247Sports listed Soli as the nation's 16th-best weak-side end . He received more than 30 scholarship offers, with suitors that included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Notre Dame, Oregon and Wisconsin. - Honolulu Advertiser

Johnny White saw firsthand what defensive end Mataio Soli is capable of last fall. As a junior at Douglas County High School in Georgia, Soli finished with 70 tackles and 18 sacks. Remarkably, his numbers were even better the following year, totaling 84 tackles and 22.5 sacks, including an 8.5-sack performance in a game in late August. White, Soli's high school coach, is now expecting big things from him at Arkansas."I think he's going to be a special talent," White told WholeHogSports in Februar y. "The way that boy eats and the weight he's going to put on and the way he's going to work, he's going to refuse to not be on the field. He's going to find a way on the field. "I'm really expecting to see him playing on Sundays in the next 3-4 years. H e's going to take all of that in (by enrolling early) and he's going to do everything in his power to get on the field." - Northwest Arkansas Times
