2021 ALL-BIG TEN FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL George Karlaftis, Purdue,...Karlaftis has been one of the best defensive players in the Big Ten all season long, exemplified as a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award that is given to the college football defensive player of the year. He leads the Boilermakers in tackles for loss (11.5), sacks (5.0), forced fumbles (3), fumble recoveries (2) and quarterback hurries (8). Karlaftis' tackles for loss rank seventh in the Big Ten, recording at least 1.0 TFL in eight of nine conference games. The junior is one of only four Big Ten defenders to force at least three fumbles throughout the 2021 campaign. - Purdue Football

  11/27/20 - DE George KarlaftisJr/2022, Purdue, 6-4, 263 (DS#5 DE) + More +

Purdue is expected to be without defensive end George Karlaftis for up to 21 days after the sophomore tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday. According to the school, an antigen test administered Tuesday morning came back positive and a follow-up PCR test confirmed the result. Karlaftis is currently at home in isolation. Big Ten protocols established in September said athletes who tested positive would have to sit out three weeks before returning to activity. Karlaftis would be eligible to return for the Big Ten's crossover games the weekend of Dec. 18-19. Karlaftis returned from an ankle injury during last week's loss at Minnesota. The West Lafayette graduate suffered the injury in the Oct. 31 victory at Illinois but missed the Nov. 14 loss to Northwestern. - Journal and Courier

Illinois' veteran offensive line was challenged against Wisconsin, particularly with the Badgers loading the box. Things won't get easier against Purdue. George Karlaftis is a rushing machine and recorded both a sack and a tackle for a loss last week. He led Purdue with 17 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks as a true freshman last season - recording two TFLs and a sack against the Illini. Defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal Jr., who sat out last season with injury and is the son of former NFL player Lorenzo Neal, was an all-Big Ten selection in 2018. "Technique is huge when you play against those types of players," Illinois center Doug Kramer Jr. said. "You've got to make up for whatever might be lacking. When you play in the Big Ten against D-Lineman, technique is critical because they're great players as well so that's what it comes down to.

"Karlaftis on the edge is another great player. Obviously he was a freshman last year and he's coming into his second year and he looks improved from last year. He looks stronger on tape, so that will be challenging for our tackles on the edge. When he occasionally does move inside, it will bring the challenge to the inside guys. Really what we have to do is match the intensity, play hard and get back to what we want to be known for which is that toughness, grit and establishing the run game, which we weren't able to do last week." - Herald-Review Times
