Starting with a Thursday night game against East Carolina to kick off the college football season in North Carolina, App State will play an exciting 2021 fall schedule in head coach Shawn Clark's second full season at the helm. The Mountaineers, moving forward from a 9-3 campaign and the program's sixth straight bowl win in as many tries, will kick off the fall with back-to-back games in NFL stadiums. A Sept. 2 neutral-site tilt against ECU will be held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, followed by a Sept. 11 road game at Miami, played at Hard Rock Stadium. Kidd Brewer Stadium will host six games this fall, starting with nonconference matchups against Elon (Sept. 18) and Marshall (Sept. 25). The season ticket renewal deadline is April 30, after which App State plans to sell new season tickets. - High County Press

DEC 14 SUN BELT SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jalen Virgil, App State, (#11, Sr, WR - Lawrenceville, Ga.),...Jalen Virgil's 100-yard kickoff return gave App State its first lead of the game at 24-20 in the fourth quarter and helped lift the Mountaineers to a 34-26 road win at Georgia Southern. Virgil's first career touchdown return was the third 100-yard return in school history (Darrynton Evans in 2018 and Keith Nash in 1968). After fielding the kickoff over his head, Virgil sprinted left and weaved his way through a couple of defenders, untouched, before using his sprinter's speed to streak down the left sideline to the end zone. Virgil finished the game with 171 all-purpose yards and two total touchdowns (one receiving). - Sun Belt Football

Jalen Virgil scored on a 100-yard kickoff return and Nate Noel broke loose for a 70-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and Appalachian State beat Georgia Southern 34-26 on Saturday night in the regular-season finale for both teams. Alex Raynor's 47-yard field goal on the second play of the fourth quarter gave Georgia Southern (7-5, 4-4 Sun Belt Conference) a 20-17 lead. Virgil scored on the ensuing kickoff and after the Eagles went three-and-out, Noel scored to stretch the Mountaineers' lead to 31-20.

Miller Mosley threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Dexter Carter Jr. with 5:23 remaining that pulled Georgia Southern to 31-26. Chandler Staton added a 37-yard field goal for the Mountaineers. The Eagles then drove to their 44 before Nicholas Ross picked off a Mosley pass to seal it. Zac Thomas threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns for Appalachian State (8-3, 6-2). Noel had 13 carries for 103 yards rushing. Virgil had three receptions including a 16-yard touchdown catch. Georgia Southern's David Spaulding had a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter. - Appalachian State/AP College Football

Jalen Virgil is an off-the-bus specimen. He's 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, stacked up and has blazing speed. And if there's one guy who benefits most from the vacated snaps of Sutton's opt out, it's him. Virgil has always shown flashes, and he's worked hard during his App State career to become more comfortable as a pass catcher. He has 61 total receptions, 24 last season, and seven receiving touchdowns. His speed is NFL quality: 10.29 seconds in the 100-meter dash for the track team. If he puts together a quality season for what should be a high-scoring offense, he'll get attention. - Winston-Salem Journal

2021 SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST: Jalen Virgil, Appalachian State,...The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Virgil was the No. 1 offensive player on this year's "Freaks" list. He has produced eight plays of more than 40 yards in his career, including touchdown receptions of 73, 56 and 44 yards last season, and averaged 16.1 yards on his 61 career receptions. His 57-yard kickoff return against South Carolina also set up the Mountaineers' only offensive touchdown in a 20-15 road win against the Gamecocks. - Appalachian State Football
