Shane Lee, Southern California, Player News

When Lincoln Riley first sold Shane Lee on becoming a Trojan, the coach told the former freshman All-American linebacker that he viewed him as a critical piece of the culture he planned to build at USC. Nearly a year later, the foundation is firmly in place. The rebuild, with an 11-2 start in Riley's first season, is well ahead of schedule. And the senior captain, who could have tested the NFL draft waters, says he'll be back next season to see it through. "I'm staying," Lee said Friday. "I just like what we're building here. I'm comfortable here. I'm excited for what's to come, and I want to be a part of that. I want to help build it and be a part of it and continue what we started." - Los Angeles Times

2022 ALL-PAC-12 CONFERENCE HONORABLE MENTION: LB Shane Lee, Sr.,...USC's All-Pac-12 honorable mention choices were: offensive lineman Justin Dedich, offensive lineman Jonah Monheim, linebacker Shane Lee, wide receiver Tahj Washington and defensive back Max Williams. Lee led USC in tackles, recording 75 with 6.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks. He also tallied 2 INTs (1 returned for a TD), 1 pass breakup and 1 quarterback hurry. - USC Football

Players on both side of the ball are impressed by linebacker Shane Lee. That was obvious after a spring in which Lee held down the MIKE linebacker spot and made an immediate impact on defense and offense. Lee comes from a world apart in Tuscaloosa both in terms of the football program and the location, but he acclimated to both Lincoln Riley's first team and Los Angeles very well over the course of the spring. Like USC defensive end Solomon Tuliaupupu, injuries derailed Lee's ascent at Alabama. Unlike Tuliaupupu, that injury happened after an auspicious debut.

It seems obvious Lee is going to help USC's run defense level up after watching him in the spring game and it's also clear that Lee will continue to model best practices for his less experienced teammates which may end up in the long run being his greatest contribution. In terms of football nuts and bolts, the question mark as we've discussed is his ability to hang in on pass coverage. If he can check that box than he'll only increase the lead he has right now on his starting spot and more importantly, he'll be doing plenty to help a defense that needs to get better at literally everything in 2022. - USCFootball.com
