  Tyler Riddell threw a 13-yard touchdown to Malik Murray with 1:47 left and No. 8-ranked East Tennessee State beat No. 21 Mercer 38-35 on Saturday to win the Southern Conference title. Mercer kicker Delvin Folser missed a 42-yard field goal attempt for a chance to tie it as time expired in front of a record crowd of 10,594. It was the fourth time this season ETSU (10-1, 8-1) rallied to win after trailing in the second half. The Buccaneers built a 21-10 halftime lead before the Bears (7-3, 6-2) scored 18 points in the third quarter. Quay Holmes ran for 132 yards on 25 carries and in the process broke George Searcy's single-season rushing record and Brandon Walker's career rushing mark.   Quay Holmes ran for 161 yards and scored twice and FCS No. 14-ranked East Tennessee State held off 18th-ranked VMI 27-20 on Saturday. The Buccaneers (8-1, 5-1 Southern Conference), Chattanooga and Mercer all sit atop the conference with 5-1 records. Chattanooga plays Mercer on Nov. 13 and ETSU plays Mercer on Nov. 20. Chattanooga beat East Tennessee State 21-16 earlier in the season. Holmes ran for scores of 4 and 2 yards just 90 seconds apart late in the first quarter. Jared Folks' 13-yard interception return of VMI quarterback Seth Morgan set up a short field for ETSU, and following the score, Zion Alexander intercepted Morgan and returned it 27 yards to again set up a short field leading to Holmes' touchdown. The Keydets attempted to rally but saw a 13-play, 65-yard drive come to an end when Tyree Robinson recovered Collin Ironside's fumble that was forced by Caman Cody at the ETSU 10-yard line.   Tyler Riddell threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Malik Murray with nine seconds remaining to lift East Tennessee State to a 17-13 victory over Furman on Saturday for the Buccaneers' first win in Greenville since 1997. The winning TD came on the 14th play of an 80-yard drive when Riddle found Murray in the middle of the end zone and gave the Buccaneers (7-1, 4-1 Southern Conference) their only lead of the game. The Paladins (4-3, 2-2) led 6-3 at halftime on two Timmy Bleekrode field goals and scored their only touchdown on Jace Wilson's 20-yard pass to Ryan Miller early in the third quarter. The Buccaneers rallied with Quay Holmes' 2-yard run to complete an 11-play, 75-yard drive late in the third quarter and Riddle's TD pass to Murray. Riddell was 22 of 30 for 177 yards passing. Holmes finished with 112 yards rushing on 18 carries for ETSU, ranked 14th in the FCS coaches poll. Wilson was 15 of 26 for 227 yards and had an interception.   Quay Holmes ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries to help East Tennessee State beat The Citadel 48-21 on Saturday. Tyler Riddell was 16-of-24 passing for 270 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown throw to Nate Adkins that made it 14-10 early in the second quarter and gave ETSU the lead for good. Jacob Saylors had 12 carries for 94 yards and a score and Jawan Martin added an 18-yard TD run.

The Buccaneers (6-0, 3-0 Southern Conference), who have never won seven straight to open a season, are off to their best start since 1969. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against The Citadel and then a 48-yard catch by Will Huzzie set up Holmes' first TD and made it a two-score game with 5:14 left in the third quarter. Holmes scored on a 1-yard run to cap a six-play, 78-yard drive less than four minutes later gave ETSU a 41-21 lead. Bryson Irby capped the scoring on a 22-yard run with 2:44 to play.   Quay Holmes accounted for 185 total yards and two touchdowns and the running back took a screen pass 77 yards to the house in the fourth quarter to send East Tennessee State past Wofford 27-21 on Saturday. Holmes ran for 81 yards on 20 carries and his 5-yard scoring run to start the contest put the Buccaneers (5-0, 2-0 Southern Conference) on top 7-0. He finished with four receptions and 104 yards receiving. Following Holmes' score with 10:46 left to play, ETSU's defense forced the Terriers to punt and turn it over on downs in their last two possessions.   Quay Holmes ran for 168 yards that included a 13-yard touchdown in overtime, capping a wild finish as East Tennessee State beat Samford 55-48 on Saturday. There were six touchdowns in the fourth quarter, three by each team, before East Tennessee's Tyler Keltner kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired to force overtime tied at 48. Holmes, who also had a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter, broke two tackles before crossing the end zone to open the extra period. Donovan Manuel's tackle stopped Samford just short from converting on fourth-and-11 to end the game.

The Buccaneers (4-0, 1-0 Southern Conference), who upset Vanderbilt 23-3 in their opener, are 4-0 for the first time since 1999. Tyler Riddell threw three touchdown passes in the second half, and then added 5-yard touchdown run with 1:59 remaining that gave the Bucs a 45-41 lead. Riddell was 21-of-35 passing for 291 yards. Liam Welch avoided a sack and lofted a 19-yard touchdown pass to Montrell Washington that gave Samford (2-2, 1-1) a 48-45 lead with 56 second remaining. Welch completed 56 of 73 passes for 582 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also added 73 yards rushing.   Quay Holmes and Jacob Saylors led a powerful ground attack and the East Tennessee State defense stymied Delaware State in the Buccaneers' 38-6 victory on Saturday night. Holmes gained 157 yards on 23 carries and Saylors added 109 yards on 11 carries as ETSU (3-0) piled up 309 rushing yards. Homes and Sanders scored twice each. Jaylen Porter led the effort on defense, recording four of ETSU's seven sacks. The Buccaneers allowed just 175 total yards and 11 first downs. ETSU led 24-0 late in the second quarter before the Hornets (1-2) got on the board with a Jared Lewis to Trey Gross touchdown pass of 18 yards.   Tyler Riddell passed for two touchdowns, Quay Holmes rushed for two and East Tennessee State beat Division-II member Virginia-Wise Highland 45-14 on Saturday night. Riddell was 13 of 18 for 201 yards and Brock Landis went 4 for 8 for 73 yards, including a 14-yard strike to Will Huzzie to cap the scoring early in the fourth. ETSU (2-0) scored the opening 21 points and led 31-6 at the break after outgaining UVA Wise 290-130. Jacob Saylors scored on a 64-yard catch-and-run for a 14-0 lead, and Holmes scored on runs of 3 and 12 yards. Saylors also scored on a 16-yard run in the second quarter. Lendon Redwine was 33 for 54 for 232 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for UVA Wise.   FEB 22 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Quay Holmes, ETSU, R-Jr., RB, Powder Springs, Ga.,...ETSU running back Quay Holmes carried 19 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns in the Bucs' season-opening 24-17 win over Samford on Saturday. The redshirt junior from Powder Springs, Georgia, scored one a 1-yard run with just 5 seconds left in the first half and opened the second-half scoring with another 1-yard run with 9:18 left in the third quarter to draw ETSU even at 14-all. Holmes, who moved into seventh on ETSU's career rushing list in the win, added a pair of kick returns for 53 yards to finish with 178 all-purpose yards on the day.   Quay Holmes scored two touchdowns and ran for 125 yards and East Tennessee overcame a slow start to beat Samford 24-17 on Saturday in the spring opener for both teams. Tyler Riddell threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Juliun Lane-Price who beat his defender on an outside route. The diving defender was left helpless and Lane-Price outran a pursuing defender for the go-ahead score with 5:28 remaining to play. On Samford's final drive, Donovan Manuel intercepted Chris Oladokun's desperation pass attempt that was deflected as he flushed to the right by pressure from ETSU. Samford established immediate control using a 17-play, 88-yard scoring drive when Oladokun threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Dakota Chapman to make it 7-0. The Buccaneers coughed up the ball nine plays into their opening drive which led to a 10-play, 76-yard scoring drive for the Bulldogs.   NOV 18 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Quay Holmes, ETSU, R-So., RB, Powder Springs, Ga.,...ETSU running back Quay Holmes ran for a school-record 255 yards and a career-best three touchdowns in the Bucs' 38-33 win over Mercer on Saturday. Holmes averaged 9.8 yards per carry on 26 attempts, ripping off a long of 74 yards to break the 21-year-old school record of 242 rushing yards. The redshirt sophomore from Powder Springs, Georgia, also had three kick returns for 59 yards, giving him 314 all-purpose yards on the day. Holmes' big day put him over 1,000 rushing yards on the day, making him just the fifth player in program history to reach the milestone in a season.   Quay Holmes rushed for a career-high 255 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries and East Tennessee State took a big first-half lead and held off Mercer 38-33 on Saturday. Tyray Devezin finished with 168 yards and four TDs for Mercer. His 11-yard scoring run gave the Bears a 7-0 first-quarter lead and his second TD gave Mercer a 14-10 lead 5 seconds into the second quarter. But Holmes pitched in with TD runs of 4 and 1 yard and Tyler Riddell hit Keith Coffee for a 27-yard score for a 31-14 lead halftime lead for the Buccaneers (3-8, 1-7 Southern Conference), who picked up their first conference win of the season.

Devezin's 13-yard TD run and Kaelan Riley's 4-yard TD pass to Chris Ellington pulled Mercer within 31-26 just 7 seconds into the final period. Holmes' third scoring run -- a 3-yarder -- pushed ETSU's lead to 12. Devezin's 7-yard TD run with 4:33 left in the game capped the scoring for the Bears (4-7, 3-5). The Buccaneers then used a 10-play drive to run out the clock. ETSU finished with 526 yards of offense, including 410 on the ground. Mercer had 414 yards of offense with 190 coming on the ground.   Quay Holmes scored on a 2-yard run for the fourth-quarter lead, Artevius Smith capped a big game with a big interception, and East Tennessee State rallied to defeat Austin Peay 20-14 on Saturday. Holmes, who gained 60 yards on 17 carries, scored with 6:58 remaining and Tyler Kettner added a 37-yard field goal for the Buccaneers (2-2). After Kettner's field goal with 1:38 remaining, Austin Peay gained one first down before Smith's interception sealed the win for ETSU.
