Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said starting defensive end Xavier Thomas will miss the rest of the season after re-injuring his foot. Swinney said Monday night on his radio call-in show that the 6-foot-2, 256-pound fifth-year senior will need surgery on the foot he first hurt in August at training camp. Swinney said having surgery sooner rather than later would give Thomas a reset for whatever he chooses to do next - return for a sixth year with the Tigers or prepare for the NFL combine. "So if he does decide to come back to Clemson, he's ready to go for spring practice and all that," Swinney said. "And if he does go ahead and go pro, then he's fully ready for the combine and he's got no limitations and all those things. But man, your heart goes out to him." The 12th-ranked Tigers (8-1, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) play Louisville (6-3, 3-3) on Saturday. Thomas has started 19 of 49 games in his college career. He's had 30 tackles for loss and 14 1/2 sacks. He missed the first five games before returning against Boston College where he had two sacks in just six snaps. Thomas did not play this past week in a 35-14 loss at No. 20 Notre Dame. - AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 53. Xavier Thomas, DE, Clemson, Senior. Notable 2021 stat: 21 tackles (12 solo), 3.5 sacks. Last year's ranking: 58. A former five-star recruit, Thomas announced his arrival with style, delivering a highlight reel hit on Syracuse QB Eric Dungey to secure a Clemson win in 2018. Stardom appeared imminent, but COVID-19 and other injuries kept Thomas in check for much of the next two years. In 2021, however, he finally delivered on that promise, racking up 14 QB hurries, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He also led the ACC with a 14.1% pressure rate. - ESPN.com

All-conference Clemson football defensive end Xavier Thomas will miss four to six weeks with a foot injury, defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said Monday. Thomas, a presumed starter and former five-star recruit, injured his foot in the Tigers' first scrimmage of preseason camp on Saturday in Memorial Stadium. "He's had a great camp and he's in a great spot conditioning-wise," Goodwin said of Thomas. "It's an unfortunate setback, but he's got the right mindset and we'll respond and get him back early in the year." Goodwin said he would defer to coach Dabo Swinney on the specifics of Thomas' injury, including what type of foot injury it was and which foot it was on.

Swinney's next scheduled preseason camp media availability is on Wednesday afternoon. >Goodwin added that it was "great news" to hear that Thomas' injury was not a season-ending one. The fifth-year defensive end is in a "good, positive state" now after being "down a little bit" after his initial injury Saturday, Goodwin said. "Life is tough and unfair at times," Goodwin said, "but he's in a great mental state right now and he's very positive and really excited to get back to where he was." Thomas' injury occurred on Aug. 13. A month-long recovery would put him on track to play in Clemson's third game of the season, a home matchup with Louisiana Tech on Sept. 17, after missing the remainder of preseason camp and the program's first two games at Georgia Tech on Sept. 5 and home against Furman on Sept. 10. - The State

Clemson starting defensive end Xavier Thomas will miss up to six weeks with a foot injury suffered over the weekend. Defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said Monday that Thomas, a 6-foot-5, 265-pound fifth-year lineman, will need surgery. Thomas hurt himself during a scrimmage Saturday and tweeted afterward: "Small thing to a GIANT. The work does not stop! Ill be right back." A Clemson spokesman said in a text to The Associated Press that he didn't know if Thomas injured his right or left foot. Thomas had 27 tackles, including 3 1/2 sacks and two forced fumbles in 12 games last season, 10 of them starts. Thomas, who is from Florence, South Carolina, has started 19 games in his Clemson career, with 112 tackles and 12 1/2 sacks. - AP College Football

One of Clemson football's top defensive linemen suffered an injury during the program's Saturday scrimmage, according to multiple media outlets. The Clemson Insider and Clemson Sports, citing sources, reported that fifth-year defensive end Xavier Thomas limped off the field Saturday with an injury. Thomas later left Memorial Stadium on a golf cart with a trainer by his side. "Life really isn't fair man. It really isn't," Thomas tweeted at 1:29 p.m. Saturday, adding in a follow-up tweet with a heart emoji: "Small thing to a GIANT. The work does not stop! (I'll) be right back. God got the kid." Clemson had no immediate update on Thomas' status or immediate timeline for providing an update, a team spokesperson told The State on Saturday. After battling injuries and lingering coronavirus symptoms over the past three seasons, Thomas, the No. 3 overall recruit in his high school class, was primed for a big 2022 with the Tigers. The starting defensive end entered preseason camp at 6-foot-2 and 254 pounds; he also tweeted last month he was down to 15% body fat, the lowest since his 2018 true freshman season. - The State

Clemson defensive end Xavier Thomas has had an up-and-down career thus far. Swinney is hopeful that the former five-star recruit is ready to finish his time at Clemson on a high note. Thomas has been consistent so far this spring, according to Swinney. That is a big change from last year. The senior missed time at the start of last season as he recovered from COVID, then missed the final two games of the 2020 season for an unspecified reason. "He's been consistent, and he was consistently inconsistent last year. Just for all kinds of reasons," Swinney said. "That's probably the biggest thing has just been his availability. He's been here every day. He's been very consistent. And that's all we need. I'm excited for him to hopefully finish up strong and really have the type of offseason that he needs to have and wants to have." Thomas appeared in seven games last year, making one start. He has 22.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks over three years so far in his college career. - The State

Xavier Thomas is returning to Clemson for the 2021 season, looking to finally live up to the hype. The former five-star recruit and No. 3 overall prospect for the class of 2018 has played in 34 games through the first three years of his career. He has nine sacks in those 34 games. Thomas was a candidate to transfer or turn pro following this past season but will instead return to Clemson, the school announced late Monday via social media. It has been a difficult college career for Thomas thus far. He had a disappointing sophomore season that saw him record only two sacks and ended with him being suspended for the first quarter of the national title game. This past season he missed the first three games of the year after battling COVID-19 and strep throat over the summer. - The State

The junior defensive end got his first sack of the season as he continues to work his way back into the rotation. Thomas battled COVID-19 and strep throat this summer and was sidelined as Clemson went through summer workouts. He didn't make his season debut until the Miami game on Oct. 6. - The State

Clemson will be without one of its top talents for much of the 2020 season. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney announced Thursday night that defensive end Xavier Thomas will be eligible to play in four games but will redshirt in 2020 after a battle with COVID-19 and strep throat. Thomas, a former five-star recruit, was expected to be a starter for the Tigers this fall. "We are holding him out for medical reasons. Really treating him like an injury. X has probably had more on him than anybody since March," Swinney said. "He's just nowhere near where he needs to be to play football." - The State

Clemson starting defensive end Xavier Thomas is expected to miss a third consecutive game since suffering a concussion at practice last month. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney says Thomas has made significant progress since entering the concussion protocol before No. 4 Clemson's 45-10 victory at Louisville three weeks ago. However, the team plans to hold him out Saturday against Wofford of the Football Championship Subdivision. Thomas had started four of the team's first six games before getting hurt. The 6-foot-2, 265-pound sophomore from Florence is third on the Tigers with 4+ tackles for loss. Clemson (8-0) is looking for its 24th consecutive victory when it takes on Wofford (5-2). - AP College Football

Clemson defensive end Xavier Thomas is expected to return this week from concussion protocol when the No. 4 Tigers play Boston College. Says defensive coordinator Brent Venables: "I think he probably will, but we'll see." Thomas was hurt during practice and did not travel for Clemson's 45-10 win over Louisville. The 265-pound sophomore has started four of the first six games for Clemson (7-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). He's tied for third on the team with 4.5 tackles for loss and with six quarterback pressures. Justin Foster started in his place against Louisville and was named the ACC defensive lineman of the week with two sacks. - AP College Football

Clemson's defense still looks ferocious after saying goodbye to four defensive linemen taken in the NFL draft, including three in the first round. The Christian Wilkins-led Power Rangers are gone, but a new set of superheroes already is emerging. Against Texas A&M, No. 1 Clemson allowed only 4.2 yards per play and kept the Aggies out of the end zone until 6 seconds were left in the game.

End Xavier Thomas is the type of pass rusher who could develop into a first overall draft pick. Freshman defensive tackle Tyler Davis has already worked his way into the starting lineup and against A&M he put a few Aggies' offensive linemen on skates. The talent never seems to run out at Clemson and, of course, there is one constant: defensive coordinator Brent Venables. Clemson has upped his pay to more than $2 million per year, but the return on investment is still high for coach Dabo Swinney. "The opposing teams are fortunate because they have to play Coach V once," Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott said. "We have to play him year-round. - AP College Football
