  05/04/22 - K Parker WhiterSr/2022, South Carolina, 6-4, 207 (DS#5 K) + More +

South Carolina's all-time leading scorer is heading to the NFL. Former Gamecocks kicker Parker White will participate in a rookie mini-camp with the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week, he told The State on Monday. Such a mini-camp is essentially a three-day tryout. In a perfect world, he'll only need the first weekend to land a spot on a roster. He surpassed Elliott Fry as the school's all-time leading scorer with a 30-yard field goal against North Carolina in the Duke's Mayo Bowl on Dec. 30. He finished his six years at South Carolina with 368 career points.

He also finished his college career ranked among the top three in program history in made field goals (T1st-72), field goals attempted (1st-99), extra points made (2nd-152) and extra point attempts (2nd-154). "He's automatic. He's clutch," head coach Shane Beamer said in November. "I don't know if there's a better kicker in the country." White concedes that the sixth year of eligibility he received via the NCAA's decision to grant another year to all players who played during the COVID-19 pandemic was a blessing in disguise. - Rock Hill Herald

When Shane Beamer accepted the South Carolina job last December, he recalled his days as Steve Spurrier's assistant and the big wins and raucous atmosphere when the Gamecocks were rolling. The first-year coach got his first true taste of that with Spurrier in the building as the Gamecocks routed Florida 40-17 on Saturday night. First-time starter Jason Brown threw for two touchdowns, Kevin Harris and ZaQuandre White each rushed for over 100 yards and South Carolina's defense held the potent Gators' attack to just 82 yards rushing. "I remember days and nights like this" when he was here from 2007-2010 as the Gamecocks won their only SEC Eastern Division in that final season, Beamer said. "We're not there yet," Beamer cautioned. "We're still a work in progress, but we took a big step tonight." A step that few expected out of South Carolina (5-4, 2-4 Southeastern Conference). The Gamecocks were routed at Texas A&M 44-14 two weeks ago and saw its starting quarterback Zeb Noland undergo knee surgery. The Gators (4-5, 2-5) entered averaging 242 yards a game on the ground and 483 yards of total offense, third best in the SEC.

But South Carolina became the first team this season to outgain them, 459-340. Parker White had a career-best four field goals and defensive tackle Jabari Ellis had an 18-yard fumble recovery touchdown to put South Carolina up 30-10 at halftime. "The fair just left town and I still feel like I'm on a rollercoaster," Ellis said of following the A&M loss with the biggest win of the season. Brown became the Gamecocks' third starting passer this season and the FCS transfer made his first Southeastern Conference start an eye-opening one. "He's always prepared himself for the moment," Gamecocks' receiver Josh Vann said. - South Carolina/AP College Football

South Carolina's offensive consternation still isn't cured. The Gamecocks have scored one rushing touchdown in five games. But as long as the Gamecocks' defense can pick up the slack, as they did with their third touchdown of the year against Troy, they can continue to work on it without feeling too bad. David Spaulding returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown, Parker White kicked three field goals and South Carolina overcame several mistakes in the second half to hold off the Trojans 23-14 on Saturday.

White booted a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter with just over two minutes left to make it a two-possession lead and Damani Staley intercepted Taylor Powell with less than 30 seconds to play. "I don't know about you guys, I feel like I aged about 40 years during that game," said South Carolina coach Shane Beamer, who saw his Gamecocks score one defensive TD and should have scored another. "We talk about playing smart football. We didn't do a great job of that today." The Gamecocks (3-2) led 17-7 at halftime after Spaulding's return. Yet the Trojans (2-3) wouldn't go away and South Carolina's inability to take advantage of its numerous chances to score helped Troy stay in it. - South Carolina/AP College Football

SEPT 13 SEC CO-SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Parker White, PK, South Carolina,...White connected on a 39-yard game-tying field goal with 6:46 remaining in the contest, then converted a 36-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Gamecocks to a 20-17 come-from-behind win over East Carolina...White's game-winner was the sixth of his career in the 4th quarter or later. - SEC Football

The turnovers and penalties kept coming to put South Carolina in a 14-point hole. An aggressive defense, a stick-with-it running game and a clutch kick kept the Gamecocks from stumbling. Parker White knocked through a 36-yard field goal as time expired as South Carolina rallied to beat East Carolina 20-17 on Saturday, earning its first road win under first-year coach Shane Beamer. Damani Staley had a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime to give the Gamecocks a needed spark after trailing 14-0 in a mistake-filled opening half. Former graduate assistant Zeb Noland also had a game-tying touchdown pass to Dakereon Joyner in the back of the end zone late in the third quarter.

It was the perfect outcome for Beamer: resilient enough for a win, with plenty of obvious deficiencies to improve. "I just told the team in there I don't think I've ever been more proud of a football team than that group right there," Beamer said, adding: "Having said that, we've got to get a whole lot better." In the end, the Gamecocks (2-0) did enough to give themselves a shot, then rode the legs of Juju McDowell – who gained 45 yards on six carries on South Carolina's final 10-play drive – to set up White's winner that had the Gamecocks spilling onto the field from the sideline to celebrate. - South Carolina/AP College Football

He graduated in May and under normal circumstances this season would be White's last, but COVID-19 has gifted him another year of eligibility if he wants to use it. The decision hasn't been made but there's definitely an impetus to stay - averaging 77 points per season, White could easily smash USC's career mark for points scored and challenge for records in field goal attempts and makes. "At home in Charleston, I was kicking a lot with Elliott Fry," the former Wando High standout said of his summer. "I sent him a joking text message as soon as the NCAA made their rule that you could come back. I just texted him and said, 'Congratulations, I just beat your record.' We'll see how that shakes out, but he got a kick out of it, I think." His work with former Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed and USC great/current Tampa Bay Buccaneer Ryan Succop has paid dividends. White, inconsistent as a redshirt freshman, is now nearly automatic from 49 yards in. There's been plenty of talk about why Muschamp decided to kick a field goal against Tennessee while trailing by seven points with 3:16 to play last week, but none about whether or not White could make it. - The Post and Courier

2020 PRESEASON LOU GROZA COLLEGIATE PLACE-KICKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Parker White, South Carolina,...White only missed one field goal attempt from within 50 yards last year. His long distance kick came as part of a 3-for-3 field goal performance vs Appalachian State, a mark he also hit against Alabama. But it was his 24 yarder in double overtime against Georgia that fans will remember best, outdueling last year's Groza winner Rodrigo Blankenship. - Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award
