With all of the changes to Michigan State's roster during the offseason, the biggest question of the spring will still be unanswered when preseason camp begins: Who will be the Spartans' starting quarterback when they travel to Northwestern on Sept. 3 to open the season? "I feel good about the competition that we have," coach Mel Tucker said Friday during the Big Ten media days. "It's open, it's an open competition. We have capable quarterbacks that all have different skill sets. But it's going to be competitive." Tucker did not tip his hand as to whether sophomore Payton Thorne or Temple graduate transfer Anthony Russo might have the edge to replace 2020 starter Rocky Lombardi, who transferred to Northern Illinois. He likely won't know until MSU opens preseason camp Aug. 5.

"It's really close. Really close," junior wide receiver Jalen Nailor said. "Neck and neck." Thorne started in place of an injured Lombardi in MSU's last game of 2020, going 22-for-39 with three touchdowns and one interception in a 39-24 loss at Penn State. Overall, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Naperville, Illinois, native played in four games, completing 48 of 85 passes for 582 yards with three TDs and three interceptions. He also ran 25 times for 47 yards and a TD. Russo, who started 26 games over the past three seasons at Temple, played just three games in 2020 before a shoulder injury and COVID-19 halted his season. - Lansing State Journal

Anthony Russo is on the move. Not from Michigan State football, though. He just arrived in East Lansing in January and hopes to land the starting quarterback job when camp opens in a few weeks. Instead, the Spartans' graduate transfer quarterback signed a name, image and likeness deal Wednesday with College Hunks Hauling Junk, Russo told the Free Press. The Tampa, Florida-based moving firm signed Miami (Florida) QB D'Eriq King, another transfer, to a precedent-setting contract July 1 when new NCAA rules allowing college athletes to make money as company spokespeople and endorsers went into effect. While Russo said his deal falls nowhere near the $20,000 King received - "Oh God, I wish," Russo said while laughing, "I'd take half of that, but I'm not even getting half" - the sixth-year senior added he can make more with personal appearances and by hitting other bonus terms in his contract. - Lansing State Journal

New faces are starting to arrive in the Michigan State football program. On Sunday, the Spartans welcomed early enrollees in the 2021 recruiting class as well as a handful of transfers. Quarterback Anthony Russo from Temple, offensive lineman Jarrett Horst from Arkansas State, defensive end Drew Jordan from Duke and running back Kenneth Walker III from Wake Forest - a group that all committed to Michigan State after the end of the 2020 season - are all officially enrolled, a program spokesman confirmed. - Detroit News

Temple quarterback Anthony Russo will miss his second straight game because of a shoulder injury. Coach Rod Carey announced that Russo won't play against SMU at noon Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field against. Russo, a redshirt senior, has made 26 career starts. He had 17 consecutive starts before missing Saturday's 38-3 loss at Tulane. "Could he be ready by Saturday? I think there's probably an outside opportunity for that, physically. But certainly he would not have practiced all week and that can't happen," said Carey, whose team is 1-3 overall and in the American Athletic Conference. (SMU is 6-1, 3-1.) "He is obviously disappointed, but my first job is to make sure that the team we field out there is safe, and I don't think that would be a proper situation." Carey said Russo has an AC joint injury. "It is really a pain threshold thing, not a structural thing, but it affects his range of motion, it is on his throwing arm, so it is a big deal," Carey said. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Carey said on Monday that quarterback Anthony Russo was having an MRI on his throwing shoulder. While the team didn't announce the results of the MRI, Carey, on Tuesday in a statement to The Inquirer, said, "Anthony did not practice today, hope to have him back on the field tomorrow." Russo, a right-handed thrower, attempted 63 passes in Saturday's loss at Memphis. As far as Temple's depth chart is concerned, the backup quarterback is listed as Trad Beatty or Re-al Mitchell. Both are redshirt sophomores. Mitchell is a transfer from Iowa State. Neither has seen action this season. - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Anthony Russo threw for four touchdowns and Amir Tyler stuffed a two-point conversion try with a minute to go as Temple beat South Florida 39-37 Saturday. Tyler, who also forced a fumble in the first half, dropped Noah Johnson for a loss after USF scored on Leonard Parker's 1-yard run. Russo threw a 13-yard score to Randle Jones to complete a 19-point run that left the Owls (1-1, 1-1 American) ahead 39-31 with 4 1/2 minutes left. Arnold Ebiketie picked up a bungled USF handoff and carried it 11 yards for a 32-31 lead after a two-point run failed. Russo started the rally from an 11-point deficit with a 12-yard TD pass to Branden Mack with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Russo was 30-of-42 passing including two interceptions. Two of his touchdown passes went to Jadan Blue. Jordan McCloud threw for 182 yards on 15-of-26 passing and three scores for the Bulls (1-4, 0-3 American). USF went ahead 21-17 with just over a minute left in a wild close to the first half. Johnson scored on a 2-yard run that came after Mekhi LaPointe returned an interception to the Temple 35. The Bulls then recovered an onside kick but fumbled the ball back to the Owls two plays later. Temple had a field-goal attempt blocked on the final play of the half. No fans were permitted for Temple's home opener. - Temple/AP College Football

Russo understands competition. He was the backup his redshirt sophomore year when starter Frank Nutile was injured before the third game. Russo played so well that Nutile never got his job back. Last season Russo improved statistically, but he had some hiccups. He completed 58.7% of his passes for 2,861 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions for the 8-5 Owls. It took time to get comfortable in a new offense under Carey and offensive coordinator Mike Uremovich.

Now in his second year in this system, Russo thinks he will be able to do more, but with less. He said that he came to camp 14 pounds lighter. The 6-foot-4 Russo said he now weighs 234 pounds. Uremovich said he wants Russo to be more of a running threat. "Last year I kind of wasn't in the best shape of my life, I wasn't able to be a threat with my legs," Russo said. "Sophomore year, I was a little bit more mobile, was able to extend plays a little bit better." - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News

Will Mobley kicked three field goals and Anthony Russo threw two touchdown passes as Temple held off Tulane, 29-21 in an American Athletic Conference battle between two bowl-eligible teams Saturday afternoon. Mobley connected from 35 yards in the first quarter to put the Owls on the board and, after Kenny Yeboah caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Todd Centeio, added another from 27-yards out in the second to give Temple (7-3, 4-2) a 13-7 halftime lead.

Mobley kicked a 20-yard field goal midway through the third quarter and Yeboah caught an 8-yard pass from Russo to make it 22-7 after three.   Anthony Russo threw two touchdown passes and Temple took advantage of four turnovers by Memphis to upset No. 23 Memphis 30-28 on Saturday. Brady White passed for 355 yards and two scores for Memphis (5-1, 2-1 American), which fell behind 16-0 as the Owls turned the Tigers' mistakes into points. The win was secured when an apparent diving catch for Tigers tight end Joey Magnifico to convert a fourth-and-11 was overturned by instant replay with 1:50 to play in the fourth.

It would have placed Memphis inside the Temple 30, but instead the Owls (5-1, 2-0) were able to burn the clock. Jager Gardner ran for a score and Isaiah Wright and Brandon Mack caught touchdown passes for Temple. Russo's 12-yard touchdown to Mack made it 30-21 with 12:48 left in the fourth. Russo threw for 224 yards on 20-for-33 passing. Kenneth Gainwell had eight catches for 98 yards and rushed 19 times for 107 yards and a touchdown for Memphis. - Temple/AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD CANDIDATE: QB Anthony Russo, Temple,...Russo took over the starting quarterback job in week three of the 2018 season leading Temple to its first win of the season, a 35-14 blowout at Maryland. He never looked back piloting the Owls to a 7-3 record in his 10 starts and a berth in the 2018 Independence Bowl. Along the way he completed 198 passes for 2,563 yards which rank among the best in TU history. In just his sixth start, he led the Owls to an overtime win against #20 Cincinnati and followed that with perhaps his best game the next week.

On a nationally televised Thursday night stage, Russo went toe-to-toe with Heisman candidate Milton McKenzie reaching career-highs in attempts (52), completions (31), yards (444), and touchdowns (4). Temple fell however, 52-40, at #9 UCF. This is the first time Russo has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. He is among 37 quarterbacks selected to the list, but one of only five players from the American Athletics Conference. - Temple Football
