  05/01/21 - WR *JaMarr ChaseJr/2021, LSU, 6-0, 201 (DS#1 WR) + More +

Ja'Marr Chase being picked to the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 5 wasn't exactly a surprise, but a text from the LSU star's former quarterback offered a bit of hint. "Get your bags packed," Burrow texted his former teammate before the draft, as relayed by Chase after his selection. It only took Chase a few words to get to his excitement about the reunion as he spoke to ESPN's Suzy Kolber on stage. "It's a blessing coming true, being out here with my family, you know, especially having this great experience," Chase said. "But for the most part I can't wait to get to work with Joe...I'm ready to work."

The biggest roadblock to the reunion was likely the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4. When Atlanta picked Florida tight end Kyle Pitts at that slot, the crowd at Chase's watch party in New Orleans cheered, according to a report from NOLA.com's Rod Walker. The pick marked the first time since 2007 the same team picked LSU players in the first round of back-to-back drafts. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Star LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase will attend the NFL draft in person in Cleveland, which means the highly rated prospect will participate in the league's ceremonious return to its more usual fanfare after the coronavirus pandemic forced the annual event to be done virtually last year. Chase is projected to be a high first-round pick, and some mock drafts have him going as high as No. 5 overall to the Cincinnati Bengals, where he'd rejoin former LSU teammate Joe Burrow, or No. 6 overall to the Miami Dolphins. The NFL announced last month that the draft, which takes place April 29 until May 1, will be held in iconic Cleveland locations, including FirstEnergy Stadium, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Last week, LSU announced that its NFL pro day is scheduled for March 31, and, on Tuesday, the university released of the eight players who will participate in the wake of a canceled NFL combine. The pro day, when NFL scouts test and time LSU's draft-eligible players, is all the more important this year because the annual NFL scouting combine did not happen because of coronavirus concerns. The list includes four players who opted out for the full 2020 season or at least part of the year. LSU wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall, both considered first-round talents, headline the offensive side while linebacker Jabril Cox, a Butkus Award semifinalist in 2020, is one LSU's top names on defense along with defensive back Kary Vincent, who started at nickel safety in three seasons in Baton Rouge. Safety JaCoby Stevens, fullback/tight end Tory Carter and wide receiver Racey McMath will also participate in the scouting event. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Former LSU wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase officially declared Tuesday for the 2021 NFL draft. Chase announced the decision on his Twitter account. Chase opted out of the 2020 college football season two weeks ago. Though expected to prepare for the draft, he didn't specify his future plans, only saying he looked forward to returning to the field next year. Chase, a junior, had one season left of eligibility. After a record-setting year in which he won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's best receiver in 2019, mock drafts have projected him as an early first-round pick. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Chase won the 2019 Biletnikoff Award, given to the top receiver in the nation, en route to a 2-touchdown performance in the Tigers' National Championship win over Clemson.   The Southeastern Conference has established September 26 as the new kickoff for its 2020 football season to allow its universities to focus on the healthy return of their campus communities and the gradual re-introduction of athletics, as the 14 members of the SEC continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Thursday. The 2020 SEC football season will be comprised of a 10-game Conference-only schedule and the SEC Football Championship Game will be played December 19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, rescheduled from the original date of December 5. The schedule will include one mid-season open date for each school and an open date on December 12 for all schools.

"This new plan for a football schedule is consistent with the educational goals of our universities to allow for the safe and orderly return to campus of their student populations and to provide a healthy learning environment during these unique circumstances presented by the COVID-19 virus," Sankey said. "This new schedule supports the safety measures that are being taken by each of our institutions to ensure the health of our campus communities." This action was taken following extensive discussions and thorough deliberation among the SEC's Presidents and Chancellors, Athletics Directors, Conference Office staff, and medical advisors, led by the SEC's Return to Activity and Medical Guidance Task Force. - SEC Football

The Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc., the Florida-based creator and sponsor of the prestigious Biletnikoff Award, has released the 2020 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List. The Biletnikoff Award annually recognizes the college football season's outstanding FBS receiver. Any player, regardless of position (wide receiver, tight end, slot back, and running back) who catches a pass is eligible for the award. As such, the Biletnikoff Award recognizes college football's outstanding receiver, not merely college football's outstanding wide receiver.

The name Biletnikoff is synonymous with the term receiver. Fred Biletnikoff, a member of the pro and college football halls of fame, was a consensus All-America receiver at Florida State University, and an All-Pro receiver for the Oakland Raiders. He caught 589 passes for 8,974 yards and 76 touchdowns in his 14-year Raiders career from 1965 through 1978. Fred was the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XI. - The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation

SEC Media Days will take place in a virtual format for the first time this year due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, it was announced Wednesday. The annual football kickoff event had been scheduled for July 13-16 at the College Football Hall of Fame and Omni Hotel in Atlanta. The dates and times for the virtual SEC Media Days will be announced at a later date. "Conducting football media days in a virtual format will provide us the opportunity to manage the event in a healthy manner as we continue to be impacted by COVID-19, and will provide flexibility for our programs to adjust their preparation for the 2020 football season according to the preseason calendar that is expected to be expanded due to the cancellation of the spring football season," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. "We look forward to returning to our traditional media days format in 2021." The virtual event will include Sankey's "State of the SEC" address, as well as media sessions with the league's 14 head football coaches and select student-athletes. SEC Network will once again provide television coverage. - Birmingham News

The Southeastern Conference university presidents will vote on an undetermined date whether players will be able to return to campus on either June 1 or June 15, LSU Executive Deputy Athletic Director Verge Ausberry told the Louisiana Economic Recovery Task Force Thursday. Ausberry, who also serves as LSU's Executive Director of External Relations, told the task force that the athletic department is aiming to return its players to campus on June 1, something athletic director Scott Woodward had also said in the department's virtual Coaches Caravan Wednesday night.

"The presidents are going to take a vote in the SEC," Ausberry told the task force, a unit of private sector business leaders who advise lawmakers on the economy's recovery amid the spread of coronavirus. "Do we come back? Do we bring the students back on June 1 or June 15?" Ausberry told the task force the vote would happen on May 22, but, in a phone call later with The Advocate, he clarified he misspoke on the date and said a vote will happen at an undetermined date. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Southeastern Conference leaders are hopeful for an on-time start to the 2020 football season, with all other FBS conferences on board. During an interview with Jacksonville, Fla., radio station 1010XL, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday he is "preparing to play football Labor Day weekend as scheduled," but added, "I don't know what will happen between now and then that's going to guide us." "The hope is (all conferences would) move along together, and to date that's been the conversation and collective thinking about how we might have to adjust," Sankey said.

There are 10 conferences and seven independent schools that make up the NCAA's largest football-playing division, the FBS. During an April 15 conference call with Vice President Mike Pence, the commissioners of those conferences, along with Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick, expressed a desire to begin the football season on the same weekend nationwide, according to The Associated Press. Last week, Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek said the SEC office and athletics directors have been in engaged in conversations about a variety of scenarios on the conference and national levels. - Northwest Arkansas Times

The SEC sent a memo to its 14-member football programs Friday, saying that starting Monday they will be allowed to offer film review and instruction to their players via video conferencing for two hours per week. The story was first reported by 247Sports. Schools will continue to be allowed to share strength and conditioning workouts with their players digitally, as many student-athletes who have gone home during the coronavirus outbreak do not have access to workout facilities or gyms. Schools like LSU have been forced to close their facilities except for meal services, housing, medical care and academic support that continue to be allowed to student-athletes as needed. Spring practices and spring games were canceled March 13 across the SEC. Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork recently told the Austin American-Statesman he thinks schools may be allowed to conduct some sort of football mini-camp activities by the NCAA in May, June or July. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Ja'Marr Chase will next wear LSU's coveted No. 7 jersey. The New Orleans native was an All-American as a true sophomore, the second player to win the Biletnikoff Award in school history, a unanimous All-American wide receiver who set single-season Southeastern Conference records in receiving yards (1,780) and touchdowns (20) in 2019. Ja'Marr Chase sets more records for LSU in title game: 'I got to come up with new goals now' Chase was the first receiver in LSU history to record three 200-yard games in a season, and he was the top target for quarterback Joe Burrow, who won the Heisman Trophy in LSU's national championship season. "He's very deserving of having the opportunity to be the next LSU player to wear number 7," LSU coach Ed Orgeron said in a statement. "I know he will do a great job of representing that number and all of those who have worn the number 7 before him."

The former four-star from Rummel High enters the 2020 season as the Tigers' offense top returning play-maker, and, as he continues the jersey tradition of Tiger greats like Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and Grant Delpit, he's laid a promising foundation that could lead to him becoming one of the best wide receivers to ever play at LSU. "This was a tough decision for me," Chase said in the statement. "I've been thinking about this for a couple of weeks. I look at No. 7 as a competitive number. I think the No. 7 at LSU is a challenge. There's a lot of things that go on in the year when you have 7 on, a lot of critics, a lot of people, a lot of expectations from 7, and I want to have that challenge upon me." - Baton Rouge Advocate

The Southeastern Conference schools each received more than $44.6 million in total revenue distributed by the league, a seven-figure increase from the previous fiscal year. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said Thursday the league handed out just over $651.0 million of total revenue among the 14 members for the 2018-19 fiscal year, which ended August 31, 2019. That's up from $627.1 million total and $43.1 million per school in 2017-18. It includes $624.2 million distributed from the conference office, as well as $26.8 million schools kept to offset travel and other related bowl expenses. The total distributed comes from television agreements, postseason bowl games and the College Football Playoff and the SEC football championship game, as well as the league's men's basketball tournament, the NCAA Championships and a supplemental surplus distribution. - AP College Football
