The University of Kentucky this month added offensive tackle Dare Rosenthal, a transfer from LSU, to its roster, setting up quite a battle for an open starting job on the offensive line. Rosenthal was the seventh player to transfer into Kentucky's progra m this offseason, and is expected to start for the Wildcats. Where on the offensive line that will be remains to be determined; he was LSU's starting left tackle, a position whose availability in part influenced Darian Kinnard's decision to forego the NF L Draft and return to UK for his senior season. Kinnard, who has started 25 straight games at right tackle for Kentucky, told reporters that he hasn't yet had an opportunity to get to know Rosenthal but looks forward to the competition at left tackle. Bo th players have been talked about as first-round level talents. "If everyone is planning to go to the NFL - that's why they come to college, besides getting a degree - you're going to have somebody come for your spot every year," Kinnard said during the Southeastern Conference Media Days event. "So I feel like you've got to get used to it now or later. But at the end of the day, it's good competition. He's a teammate. It's healthy competition."Disciplinary issues led to Rosenthal's departure from LSU following his third year in the program, but Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron spoke highly of him during his turn on the podium Monday. "He's a tremendous player. I hate to lose him," Orgeron said. "... He didn't want to leave. It was hard on him. I thi nk they've got a potential first-round draft choice there. And Dare knows he's got some stuff he needs to get better at, and I'm sure Kentucky's going to see that. He's a great young man, a great team player. He's going to be wearing another helmet. The transfer portal continues to be kind to Kentucky football. Former LSU starting left tackle Dare Rosenthal signed with UK Thursday, giving the Wildcats two possible NFL draft prospects on its offensive line. Rosenthal informed LSU of his decision to t ransfer just before the July 1 deadline for players to enter the transfer portal and be eligible to play immediately next season.According to a report from the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, LSU made "efforts to keep" Rosenthal, but the offensive lineman le ft Baton Rouge because of "continued disciplinary issues." LSU Coach Ed Orgeron did not disclose the nature of Rosenthal's disciplinary problems. "He had some personal situations that he had to take care of," Orgeron told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser when Rosenthal entered the transfer portal. "It was a hard d ecision for him, but we wish him the best. We're going to miss him." Rosenthal played in seven games and started five for LSU at left tackle last season and missed three due to suspension. He started three games as a redshirt freshman in 2019 for the Tig ers' national championship team after switching from the defensive line to the offensive line. Rosenthal was a consensus four-star recruit out of high school as a defensive tackle. Assuming Rosenthal's off-the-field issues do not get in the way of his el igibility at Kentucky, it's possible the junior could become an immediate contributor. LSU starting left tackle Dare Rosenthal is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal after a violation of school policy, according to multiple reports Monday. His departure would be a significant hit to an offensive line that was expected to return all five starters from last season. Rivals was the first to report the news. The 6-foot-7, 327-pound Rosenthal has missed several games throughout his career at LSU and the highly talented tackle was expected to be a solid option going into his junior season with potential to be a top draft choice next spring.Rosenthal, who has missed 12 games in two seasons, was suspended indefinitely from the team in October and was reinstated against Arkansas after missing two games. Cameron Wire started in Rosent hal's place at left tackle. Rosenthal returned to the starting lineup four games later in LSU's home loss to Alabama. Wire, a 6-foot-6, 311-pound junior, is the most tenured option to replace Rosenthal in 2021. On the final day college players had to declare for the NFL draft, LSU starting left tackle Dare Rosenthal instead announced Monday night that he is returning to campus next season, which means the Tigers will be returning their entire starting offensive line. The development is a major victory for LSU coach Ed Orgeron, who began the offseason by saying he would be focusing efforts on re-recruiting players for next season, particularly on the offensive line. Rosenthal's decision was the final one LSU's line was waiting on, although Orgeron and several teammates have been hinting at his likely return for several weeks. The starting left tackle for the season opener, Rosenthal didn't play or appear on the sideline when LSU faced South Carolina on Oct. 24. Sophomore Cam Wire started in his place the last two games. "He's gotten out of the groove," junior left guard Ed In gram said, "so the biggest thing is probably going to be working pass sets, working run blocks and technical stuff." Orgeron believes Rosenthal's return can help an offensive line that struggled in LSU's last game.On the road against Auburn, the g roup allowed four sacks, and LSU averaged 1.2 yards per carry as the program suffered its worst loss since 1996. Rosenthal practiced Tuesday with the second-team offensive line, returning as LSU prepares to face Arkansas this Saturday, the Tigers' first game in three weeks. I think that would help us. I should know something more today or tomorrow if he can be reinstated to the team." LSU indefinitely suspended Rosenthal in mid-October. A week after starting against Missouri, Rosenthal didn't play or appear on the sideline while LSU faced South Carolina. Rosenthal also missed LSU's game against Vanderbilt because of an injury. LSU coach Ed Orgeron still lists starting left tackle Dare Rosenthal as "questionable" for the Vanderbilt game. The 6-foot-7, 327-pound sophomore went down late in the Mississippi State game, and Orgeron said Rosenthal didn't practice Tuesday and his sta tus will be more clear by the end of the week. Rosenthal was injured on the final drive of the game. He dove to cut down an oncoming defender at the line of scrimmage, and his right shoulder made contact with the defender. Rosenthal favored the shoulder as he walked with LSU training staff to the sideline. "He did not practice yesterday," Orgeron said Wednesday morning on the SEC's weekly teleconference. "I don't know if he's going to practice today. We're going to have to see toward the end of the week , see if he's available." One of the biggest question marks for LSU heading toward a question-filled 2020 football season is an offensive line that lost four starters from last season's national championship unit. Compounding those questions was the fact projected starting left t ackle Dare Rosenthal left school during the spring semester and did not participate in the handful of spring practice days the Tigers had before breaking camp because of the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking Monday night on the "Off the Bench" radio show on 104.5 WNXX-FM, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said Rosenthal has worked through his "off the field problems," indicating he expects he will be available whenever the Tigers begin preparing for the coming season, though with a qualifier."He's gotten that st raight," Orgeron said. "I'm confident of that for now. Talking to (offensive line) coach (James) Cregg, he's been a leader in these Zoom (video conference) meetings. He's working out." Rosenthal moved from defensive to offensive line in 2018. During LSU' s bowl practices, Orgeron said Rosenthal came into his own. "These bowl practices are really good for young players," Coach O said. "That's where you see the next guy up start to step up.
