  05/03/21 - TE *Pat FreiermuthJr/2021, Penn State, 6-5, 251 (DS#2 TE) + More +

Former Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth will stay in the state of Pennsylvania to begin his professional career, after being selected No. 55 overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was the third Penn State player to be drafted after Micah Parsons and Odafe Oweh went in the first round. Freiermuth should be an immediate impact player for the Steelers, as long as he's healthy. The tight end missed the last portion of Penn State's 2020 season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. He was healthy enough to run drills at Penn State's March pro day but did not do any testing. He is a high-quality all-around tight end who can stay on the field in all situations. Freiermuth is a good run blocker who relies more on his strength and physicality than technique when asked to take on defenders in the run game and when he helps offensive tackles in the passing game. He will have plenty of time to improve his technique, which should help him become one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL. - Centre Times

  12/20/20 - TE *Pat FreiermuthJr/2021, Penn State, 6-5, 251 (DS#2 TE) + More +

Penn State junior tight end Pat Freiermuth has decided to forgo his fourth season and has declared for the 2021 NFL Draft. "It has been an absolute honor representing the Blue and White these past three seasons," said Freiermuth. "When I received my offer from Penn State, I knew right away it was the place I wanted to be. Obviously, the way my career ended wasn't what I wished for, needing season-ending surgery on my shoulder. Nittany Nation, I can promise you, I gave you everything I had."

Freiermuth's 16 career touchdown receptions are the most all-time by a PSU tight end and rank eighth overall in program history. His 1,185 career receiving yards rank 26th in program history and third among tight ends. He became the 34th Nittany Lion and seventh Penn State tight end to accumulate 1,000 career receiving yards. A native of Merrimac, Mass., Freiermuth was selected as the 2020 Kwalick-Clark Big Ten Tight End of the Year, marking Penn State's first tight end to win the award. The junior started the first four games of the season before a season-ending injury. Prior to his injury, Freiermuth led all FBS tight ends with 5.8 receptions per game and ranked fifth averaging 77.5 receiving yards per game. - Penn State Football

Almost forgotten Saturday in the disappointment of defeat for Penn State in its season-opening overtime loss to Indiana was a career-defining accolade for redshirt junior tight end Pat Freiermuth. On the Nittany Lions' first drive of the contest, Freiermuth hauled in a 2-yard touchdown from redshirt junior quarterback Sean Clifford. The score put Penn State on the board first, but more significantly, it was Freiermuth's 16th career touchdown catch. It allowed him to break former star tight end Mike Gesicki's record for the most career touchdowns by a tight end in program history. Freiermuth didn't speak about the record hours after the loss on Saturday, but he's since had time to reflect on his accomplishment. Now, the 2019 All-Big Ten selection is out to help the Nittany Lions get back on track as they get set to take on Ohio State on Saturday.

"I'm thankful and appreciative for the whole program and the whole staff who helped me get to this point of being able to break that record," Freiermuth said Tuesday. "It's a great honor to be a record-holder at Penn State in such a great, established program. I'm always going to be blessed to be a part of this program." But head coach James Franklin said he believes Freiermuth would've traded breaking the record for a "different result" on Saturday. "For us, with team success comes individual recognition," Franklin said. "I think that's how our players approach it, and I think that's how the staff approaches it. For us, it's everything we possibly can do to get a win." Freiermuth didn't spend much time basking in the glory of his milestone, either. While he mentioned the record "means the world" to him, he said he still has work to do and wants to put his "head down and grind." - Centre Times

Penn State football will have its star tight end for the 2020 season, after all. Despite reports of the contrary, Pat Freiermuth will play this fall season, he said Wednesday in a quick appearance on the Big Ten Network. The Athletic's Audrey Snyder first reported his decision to play this season. The junior previously made the decision to not play, a source with knowledge of the situation told the Centre Daily Times, after it appeared the season would not begin until November at the earliest. On his BTN appearance, Feiermuth acknowledged having conversations with coach James Franklin about the pros and cons of sticking with the team, but denied ever opting out of the season. "I never opted out. I don't know where those reports came from...I'm just excited to play football again for @PennStateFball." - Centre Times

Penn State football will be without its star tight end whenever it next takes the field. Junior tight end Pat Freiermuth will not return to play when the season begins, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The team already lost its star linebacker when Micah Parsons decided to forego his junior season and declare for the 2021 NFL draft amid uncertainty about when the Nittany Lions will take the field again during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Freiermuth, like Parsons, is widely projected to go in the first round of next year's draft. The star tight end accomplished plenty in his two years on the football field at Penn State.

He was a reliable target for former quarterback Trace McSorley and redshirt junior Sean Clifford in one year with each starting quarterback. Freiermuth was a strong and physical blocker who didn't back down from opposing defensive linemen, while displaying astute skills as a pass-catcher and a runner after the catch. He finished his Penn State career with 69 receptions for 875 yards and 15 touchdowns in 26 games played. His 15 touchdown receptions tie him for ninth all-time at Penn State and leaves him tied with Mike Gesicki for most among tight ends in school history. Freiermuth was expected to be Clifford's primary target again this season, had it taken place on schedule. - Centre Times

Freiermuth is Penn State's best returning offensive player and a potential first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The junior tight end contributed in all facets of the previous iterations of the Nittany Lion offense and should do the same under new offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca. He's a big, versatile target in the passing game who can play attached to the line and detached from it in the slot. Freiermuth is a good athlete and precise route runner in the middle of the field. Once he has the ball in his hands, the junior tight end uses his physicality and athleticism to break tackles in the open field. He's no slouch in the run game, either. Freiermuth is strong enough to help the Nittany Lion offensive tackles on double teams and sound enough technically to take on linebackers and help create rushing lanes.

There are signs that Freiermuth could see a drop in production this year. Ciarrocca rarely used his tight ends in the passing attack at Minnesota and relied heavily on the position as an extra blocker. The Golden Gophers had three tight ends combine for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 10 catches in the 2019 season. Freiermuth blew those numbers out of the water on his own last year. He hauled in 43 passes for 507 yards and seven touchdowns as Penn State's starter at the position. Those concerns made their way to Freiermuth, who quickly quelled them when he spoke with the media during the spring. "I love the new offense," Freiermuth said in May. "I guess you guys will have to find out about how they're going to use me. I know, and the coaches know, but I'm not going to leak too many details out. Obviously there's some rumors about using tight ends, but I promise you I'm going to be used." - Centre Times

Don't bother trying to contact Pat Freiermuth on social media. "I actually deleted my social media a week ago," the Penn State tight end said Wednesday. If you see one of those too-soon NFL mock drafts projecting Freiermuth as a 2021 first-round choice, he would rather not talk about it right now. "I need to focus on my time being at Penn State," he said. "If I don't have a good season, it's all down the drain. It's just preseason hype." But if the conversation comes around to Freiermuth becoming the best tight end in the country, he knows what that takes and isn't afraid to embrace the possibility. Penn State tight ends coach Tyler Bowen also doesn't run from it.

"The biggest thing he's focused on is, 'How can I be the best tight end in the country?' " Bowen said. "He has the skill set to excel at every facet of the tight end game. The big thing for him is putting it all together." Said Freiermuth: "I completely agree with what he said. My goal is to be the best tight end in the country, win the Mackey (Award) and become an All-American." The 6-foot-5, 259-pound Freiermuth has played only two seasons at Penn State after earning five letters at Brooks School, a prep institution in Massachusetts. Freiermuth, 21, claims he was an "awful" route runner when he arrived at Penn State in 2018. "Looking back on the film, I still don't know how I played," he said. - Tribune Review

Penn State's most important player, and probably its most irreplaceable player, is tight end Pat Freiermuth.   Today's Penn State football news is headlined by the latest look at the state of the Lions as the final month of 2019 begins. It starts with head coach James Franklin, as he spent part of his postgame news conference on Saturday discussing rumors that claim he is interested in other jobs after PSU completed a 10-2 regular season by beating Rutgers 26-7. "I'm hoping this is going to be over very quickly," Franklin told reporters.

"Like I told you, I love Penn State, I love our players, and I don't see that changing any time soon. [Job rumors are] a little bit the nature of college football, but I love what we're doing here. I don't see that changing any time soon. Hopefully all this conversation will be over very shortly." In other team news, the Lions learned that star tight end Pat Freiermuth will be returning for his junior season instead of entering the 2020 NFL Draft. There's no word on a few other draft-eligible players, however, such as receiver KJ Hamler or end Yetur Gross-Matos. - PennLive.com

Pat Freiermuth scored the game's first two touchdowns. Turned out that was all No. 6 Penn State really needed against Michigan State's anemic offense. Freiermuth and the Nittany Lions would add more points later, and unbeaten Penn State beat the Spartans 28-7 on Saturday. Sean Clifford threw four touchdown passes on a rainy day, and the Nittany Lions avenged close losses to Michigan State from each of the past two seasons. "I'm very excited that we're undefeated still, and that's the only goal I've had all season and I plan on going through the whole season doing that," Clifford said.

The Spartans (4-4, 2/3 Big Ten) wrapped up a dreadful stretch in which they lost to Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State by a combined score of 100-17. Penn State (8-0, 5-0) moves on to a surprising matchup of undefeated teams Nov. 9 at Minnesota. The Nittany Lions had lost five of their previous six against Michigan State. Clifford's first touchdown pass to Freiermuth, a 16-yarder, opened the scoring in the first quarter, and those same two players gave Penn State a 13-0 lead with a 19-yard strike in the second. KJ Hamler's 27-yard TD catch with 1:20 left in the half -- plus a successful 2-point conversion -- made it 21-0. - Penn State/AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON JOHN MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST: Pat Freiermuth, SO, Penn St,...Freiermuth was selected as a Freshman All-American by The Athletic, 247Sports and ESPN. He also earned honorable-mention All-Big Ten accolades from the conference's coaches and media. He finished No. 2 among FBS tight ends and led the Big Ten tight ends with eight touchdown catches as a true freshman. Freiermuth's eight score set the Penn State mark for most touchdowns by a freshman tight end and rank 10th overall.

He is one of three freshmen (four occasions) in program history to have two touchdown receptions in a game, joining Kyle Brady (vs. Cincinnati, 1991) and Deon Butler (vs. Central Michigan & Wisconsin, 2005). Freiermuth was named to the Sports Illustrated All-Bowl team after catching two passes for 38 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown against Kentucky in the VRBO Citrus Bowl. - Penn State Football
