Indiana junior running back Stevie Scott declared for the NFL Draft on Friday, shaking up the Hoosiers' offensive plans for 2021. This is only somewhat surprising because of Scott's production in 2020. He gained 581 yards, which ranked fourth in the Big Ten, but it came on a 3.6-yard-per-carry average. In his record-setting freshman season in 2018, Scott averaged 5 yards per carry behind a more veteran line. That number fell to 4.7 as a sophomore. - Hoosier Sports Report

He became the 14th Hoosier to reach 2,000 rushing yards and currently sits 10th all-time at 2,444. The Syracuse, N.Y., product is the Big Ten's active leader in attempts (543, 15th nationally), and he is second in rushing touchdowns (28, T-17th), total TDs (30, 19th) and rushing yards (26th). In 2020, Scott is second in the conference in rushing scores (7), third in total touchdowns (tied, 8) and attempts (137), and sixth in rushing yardage (462). - Indiana Football

  12/03/20 - RB *Stevie Scott IIIJr/2021, Indiana, 6-0, 225 (DS#16 RB) + More +

Indiana junior running back Stevie Scott III has demonstrated a nose for the end zone throughout his college career. In posting a three-TD rushing game last Saturday against Maryland, Scott increased his total to 28 career TDs, tying Tevin Coleman for fourth on IU's all-time career rushing TD list. With starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. out for the year with a torn ACL, Scott and the rest of IU's run game will take on an even more significant role when the No. 10 Hoosiers (5-1) play at No. 18 Wisconsin (2-1) on Saturday (3:30 p.m., ABC). The 231-pound Scott, who has rushed for at least one TD in 16 of IU's last 22 games, said crossing the goal line is a mindset about wanting the ball to get the tough yards needed to score points.

"It's just a grown man's sport," said Scott, who was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. "You've just got to be a grown man, especially when it comes down to that goal line. Anywhere in the red zone you just have to be tough, be tough and physical." IU added a new wrinkle to its run game - the Wildcat - which helped the Hoosiers rush for a season-high 234 pounds against Maryland. Scott rushed for all three of his TDs against Maryland off of direct snaps. Indiana coach Tom Allen hinted Monday running backs out of the Wildcat may even be called upon for short throws to keep the defense honest. "I would try to take advantage of that opportunity for sure," Scott said. "Excited, I'm definitely one of those players that's just trying to make a play at any given moment to help the team win, so I've got to go out on the Wildcat and pass it. I'm going to pass it and throw it … just whatever to help the team, I'm here to do." - Herald Bulletin

Stevie Scott III ran for three touchdowns and No. 12 Indiana had three interceptions, three sacks and a game-changing safety in a 27-11 win over Maryland on Saturday. Freshman Tim Baldwin Jr. ran for a season-high 106 yards for the Hoosiers (5-1), who have won four straight at home. The safety midway through the third quarter gave the Hoosiers a 9-3 lead, and Indiana extended the margin to 17-3 on the ensuring possession. Scott scored on a 1-yard plunge and backup quarterback Jack Tuttle completed his first throw of the day - a 2-point conversion to Peyton Hendershot. Tuttle also led the Hoosiers to two fourth-quarter scores after replacing injured starter Michael Penix Jr. Maryland (2-2) moved the ball well in the first half but struggled in the red zone after a 21-day break stemming from a COVID-19 outbreak that caused the cancellation of two games.

Taulia Tagovailoa missed two open receivers for potential scores in the first half and was picked off twice in the red zone. Also, Joseph Petrino missed a 29-yard field goal wide left on the first possession of the game. Penix struggled before heading to the locker room in the third quarter after suffering what appeared to be a right leg injury while he was getting tackled. He was 6 of 19 for 84 yards. Tuttle completed all five of his passes for 31 yards. Scott carried 24 times for 80 yards and Baldwin took advantage of his first significant action this season as Indiana rushed for a season-high 234 yards. Baldwin carried the ball 16 times after logging one carry in the Hoosiers' previous five games. - Indiana/AP College Football

Indiana netted minus-1 yards on 16 rushes against Ohio State, a nice statistic for the Buckeyes on paper but a bit hollow because the Hoosiers were playing from behind most of the game and had all but abandoned the run. Still, no Big Ten opponent had netted zero or negative yards on the ground against Ohio State since Northwestern ran 33 times for no yards in 2007. Indiana's 16 rushing attempts were its fewest in at least 20 years. The stat sheet showed the Hoosiers ran four times in the second half, but one was a sack. - AP College Football

Indiana junior running back Stevie Scott III was on his way to a second straight 1,000-yard rushing season when a late-season injury derailed those hopes. Scott was knocked out a game in late November against Michigan and forced to sit out IU's Old Oaken Bucket win over Purdue and Gator Bowl loss against Tennessee. "Those were hard times," Scott said. "Having love for the game and not being able to play for your team, especially having the good season that we did and going to a bowl game, my first bowl game, and not being able to play, it was very tough." Still, Scott crossed the 1,000-yard all-purpose plateau as a sophomore, finishing the year with 845 yards rushing, 211 yards receiving and a combined 11 touchdowns (10 rushing, one receiving). He showed signs of being a more complete running back as a sophomore and is looking to build off that versatility entering his junior season.

"Being the type of player that has all the attributes," said Scott, who celebrated his 20th birthday Wednesday. "Just showing the NFL, coaches and just people around the nation that I could be that type of back." Scott received another birthday surprise the night before he turned 20, being part of a Zoom call with former IU standout and current NFL running back Jordan Howard, who recently signed with the Miami Dolphins. "He was speaking really good things to me and the running back group, the other players we had in there," Scott said. "Just life in general and how to keep up our mindset going and stay positive to be a better you." - Herald Bulletin

Scott would have posted his second straight 1,000-yard season had he not suffered a season-ending injury against Michigan in late November. Instead, Scott settled for a season that included 845 yards rushing and 10 rushing TDs. The 6-foot-2, 231-pound Scott also became a more complete back as a sophomore, picking up blitzes with blocks and catching passes out of the backfield. Scott had 26 catches for 211 yards and one receiving TD last season. While Scott doesn't possess breakaway speed, he can absorb and run after contact, as he did in posting a season-long 57-yard run against Rutgers last season. Scott enters 2020 just 18 yards shy of becoming IU's 14th career 2,000-yard rusher and is tied for 10th in school history with nine career 100-yard games. - Herald Bulletin

  11/03/19 - RB *Stevie Scott IIIJr/2021, Indiana, 6-0, 225 (DS#16 RB) + More +

Stevie Scott III was a smash hit in Indiana's Saturday night premiere. He ran around defenders. He overpowered defenders. He even fooled defenders. In the first November night game played in Bloomington, Scott stole the show with two touchdown runs and a 20-yard touchdown reception, leading Indiana to a 34-3 rout over Northwestern and locking up the Hoosiers' first seven-win season since 2007. "I do feel like there was a concerted effort by the teams we were playing to load the box and he was getting impatient and trying to bounce those runs," Indiana coach Tom Allen said. "But I think coach (Mike) Hart did a good job of teaching him how to stay with it and then he started running hard, with more confidence and our offensive line keeps getting better and better. And in the passing game he (Scott) has really worked on that."

It certainly showed Saturday. Scott set the tone early by driving defenders backward on an overpowering 7-yard run on the game's fifth play. He followed that by sprinting around the left side and down the field for 27 yards on the next play to set up a field goal. He wound up carrying 26 times for 116 yards and scoring on his only catch of the night, a 20-yard TD reception. Indiana (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten) has now won four straight in conference play, its longest such streak since 1993 when they won four in a row. And the Hoosiers are one win away from their first eight-win season in 26 years despite losing starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first half Saturday with yet another undisclosed injury. - Indiana/AP College Football
