There are several players on the roster that will have NFL opportunities in 2021, including tight end Matt Bushman, nose tackle Khyiris Tonga and junior quarterback Zach Wilson, who has been discussed as a first or second round NFL draft choice by the national media. Bushman, who suffered a season-ending injury in fall camp, would have the option to return for another senior season. He recently joined the 2021 EXOS NFL Combine program, which would indicate that he might be ready to move on. - Daily Herald

The injury bug hit BYU in a big way Monday when senior tight end Matt Bushman was lost for the season to a lower-leg injury, as confirmed by the Cougars in a statement on Tuesday. It was a tough blow for his teammates, particularly those fellow seniors who have dealt with their own devastating injuries. "Honestly, it's an emotional topic," BYU senior safety Troy Warner said during Tuesday's media teleconference. "Matt Bushman is one of the greatest guys I've ever met, one of the greatest players I've ever played with. For him to go through what he is going through, I kind of feel him in a sense because I've had a major injury. But for him to be a senior and be going through this right now, it's tough. We're just trying to do anything and everything we can to be there for him during this time. He is in our prayers. He is huge to this family and I know he'll contribute anyway he can this year."

Cougar senior defensive back/linebacker Zayne Anderson echoed similar sentiments and said ever since he saw Bushman get hurt he felt a pit in his stomach. "You feel for him, for his wife Emily and everyone in the family," Anderson said. "You see how these guys work. I don't think a lot of people know what it is like to go down for the whole season with an injury, so when they go through it you feel the pain with them. Seeing him down put a pit in my stomach and all last night I was thinking about him. It makes me sick and I hate seeing stuff like that." - Daily Herald

Having Bushman out for what could be 4-6 months will greatly change the Cougars' plans as they are less than a week away from the season opener at Navy, Sept. 7. In early August, offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes said he had seen great improvement from Bushman. "Guys that are coming back for their senior year, sometimes they improve a little and sometimes they take a big jump - and I've really been impressed with the jump that he's taken," Grimes said. "He's had great ball skills since the day that he probably first touched the ball, so that's never been an issue for him, but running good routes and becoming a consistent blocker have been two things that I can see he's worked on a lot. He looks stronger to me. He looks more fluid. And I think he's doing both of those things better." Bushman led the team in receiving yards each of the last three years and joined Gordon Hudson and Dennis Pitta as the only BYU tight ends with three consecutive 500-yard seasons. In 2019, Bushman posted 47 receptions, 688 yards and four touchdowns. With Bushman out for an undisclosed amount of time, Isaac Rex will move into the starting position. - Salt Lake Tribune

Before the pandemic shook the college football world, BYU tight end Matt Bushman made the decision to forego the NFL Draft and come back to Provo for his final season. COVID-19 threatened BYU's schedule, but the Cougars have found a way to play. But the season is over for Bushman. BYU confirmed the senior would be sidelined this season on Tuesday. "BYU senior tight end Matt Bushman suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in practice Monday and will miss the 2020 football season," the press release said. - Salt Lake Tribune

Baylor Romney threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start to help BYU upset No. 14 Boise State 28-25 on Saturday night and snap a three-game losing streak. The Cougars turned to Romney, their third-string quarterback, with Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall both sidelined with injuries. He threw two scoring passes to Matt Bushman and helped deliver a second home win for BYU (3-4) over a Top 25 opponent this season. Chase Cord, Boise State's No. 2 quarterback, got the call with Hank Bachmeier out because of an injury. He struggled in his first career start, throwing for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and a pair of interceptions.

Boise State (6-1) was dealt a serious blow to its New Year's Six bowl hopes with the team's first loss to BYU since 2015. The Broncos trimmed an 18-point deficit to three late in the fourth quarter. Cord hit Octavius Evans with a 13-yard TD pass and then Akilian Butler with a 5-yard TD pass to make it 28-25 with 3:17 remaining. The Cougars were able to run out the clock after Austin Kafentzis picked up a yard on 4th-and-inches from the BYU 34 with 2:17 left. BYU took its first lead at 14-10 early in the third quarter when Sione Finau took an option pitch and raced 46 yards untouched for the score. Then the Cougars dug into the bag of tricks to pull away. Romney hit Bushman with a pair of touchdown passes to extend BYU's lead to 28-10 late in the quarter. - BYU/AP College Football
