Zane Lewis, Air Force, Player News

  04/21/20 - CB Zane LewisSr/2020, Air Force, 6-1, 196 (DS#84 CB) + More +

Zane Lewis and his agent have an understanding. If an NFL team representative reaches out to the Air Force cornerback, he lets his agent know. Same goes for the agent when he is contacted. "We're texting back and forth daily," his agent, Shaun O'Toole said. "A couple times." Some teams have contacted Lewis three or four times, inquiring even about medical records since they can't bring in prospects for physicals as would typically be the case. New teams have popped on the radar as recently as Monday. And they're not just contacting Lewis. "I have spoken to people within the National Football League who have called us and asked us specifically about him," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said.

What this means as the NFL draft is set to begin Thursday remains to be seen. The Athletic's Dane Brugler posted a mock draft that had Lewis going to the Denver Broncos in the seventh round. O'Toole thinks Lewis could be a late-round selection, and if not would certainly be signed as an undrafted free agent. Lewis' ascent as a pro prospect has developed relatively suddenly and benefited from a confluence of events. This is the first class of athletes to graduate under a new Department of Defense policy that allows service academy athletes to apply to have service time delayed while trying professional sports. - Colorado Springs Gazette

Air Force cornerback Zane Lewis will graduate on April 18 and then test the military's new policy for pursuing professional sports. Lewis and baseball center fielder Ashton Easley submitted application packages under the guidelines set by President Donald Trump's administration. Lewis is awaiting final approval, while Easley pulled his paperwork after the Olympics were postponed and instead intends to pursue baseball through the World Class Athlete Program.

According to the policy obtained by The Gazette, applications must include an endorsement from the Secretary of the Air Force stating the professional career will result in "significant favorable media exposure likely to enhance national level recruiting or public affairs missions." Lewis would graduate and receive a bachelor's degrees but not a commission as an officer. He instead would enter into an eight-year enlistment in the Individual Ready Reserves while playing football. His commission, along with a five-year commitment, would then come after submitting a request to the Secretary of Defense, presumably when his playing career is finished or attempts to break into the NFL have been exhausted. - Colorado Springs Gazette

These were party crashers Air Force was happy to welcome. Expecting no more than one or two scouts, Falcons senior receiver Geraud Sanders, cornerback Zane Lewis and kicker Jake Koehnke performed for representatives from a dozen NFL teams at their Pro Day on Monday. "It was good that they were all here," Lewis said. "At least they know about our team and our players and how much Air Force does have."

The scouts don't speak with media, so no explanation was given for the abundance of eyes on hand to watch the three seniors - who were joined by 2017 graduate Jacob Onyechi, who returned for his third pro day workout at the academy but was slowed by a hamstring injury suffered last week. Onyechi didn't sprint, but his 36-inch vertical and 10-foot-6 broad jump showed the leaping ability still exists after nearly three years on active duty in Florida. Explanations for the large turnout could be the new pro policy, which presents a path for service academy graduates to turn professional immediately. - Colorado Springs Gazette
