Baylor Romney, Brigham Young, Player News

Baylor Romney threw for a career-high 305 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 15 BYU to a 35-27 victory over South Florida on Saturday night. Tyler Allgeier ran for 81 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help the Cougars earn their sixth straight victory dating to last season. Gunner Romney and Puka Nacua each finished with more than 100 receiving yards, combining for 221 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. BYU (4-0) turned in a dominant offensive performance, totaling 443 yards while averaging 8.9 yards per play. Timmy McClain threw for 186 yards and ran for 55 yards to lead South Florida. Jaren Mangham added 86 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The Bulls (1-3) scored on three straight drives in the second half before ultimately coming up short.

Baylor Romney started at quarterback in place of Jaren Hall, who suffered a rib injury on BYU's final scoring drive against Arizona State a week earlier. With him at the controls, the Cougars ran over the Bulls from the start. On his first pass of the game, Baylor Romney hit his brother, Gunner, with a 49-yard strike that set up BYU's first touchdown. He followed with a 55-yard dart to Puka Nacua that set up another score on the Cougars' second drive. BYU raced out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter after scoring on each of its first three drives. Allgeier accounted for back-to-back touchdowns in that stretch, scoring twice on 1-yard fourth-down runs. - BYU/AP College Football

Now that offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Aaron Roderick has had time to process the work his players accomplished over the course of spring practices, the only thing that is clear is that nothing is clear. The quarterback battle is ridiculously tight between Baylor Romney, Jaren Hall and Jacob Conover - and it won't be decided anytime soon. But really, that's the best situation the Cougars could have found themselves after losing former starter Zach Wilson to the NFL Draft and New York Jets. Any one of the three candidates can find himself leading the offense come Sept. 4 when BYU opens the 2021 season against Arizona.

And Roderick is of the same mindset. "The biggest takeaway [from spring practices] is that I have three good players," Roderick said. "It's really, really tight competition between Jaren and Baylor and Jacob Conover...I think we can win games with any of those three - I have a lot of confidence in them. And so, that would be my biggest takeaway, that the quarterback position is in good hands right now and it's going to take a little more time to sort it out. But I really feel good about the group." - Salt Lake Tribune

Getting right to the point, with Zach Wilson gone, who will become BYU's next quarterback? The moment Wilson opted to not come back to Provo for his senior season, the QB race got started. Luckily for BYU, there are plenty of horses in the race. The list of candidates consists of Baylor Romney, Jaren Hall, Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters, Jacob Conover, Rhett Reilly and Mason Fakahua. Assistant coach Aaron Roderick, who recently went from being the Cougars quarterback coach to offensive coordinator, said the upcoming battle and decision for the starting quarterback position will be tough, but most likely will start with who the staff has seen play in a game. In that regard, Romney leads all other candidates. - Salt Lake Tribune

Baylor Romney completed 23 of 33 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns and BYU beat Liberty 31-24 on Saturday night. Micah Simon had seven receptions for 91 yards and a score and threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Matt Bushman and Sione Finau had 10 carries for 69 yards for BYU. On the first possession of the game, Liberty (6-4) used a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by Stephen Calvert's 19-yard touchdown pass to Zac Foutz to take a 7-0 lead but the Cougars (5-4) scored the next 17 points, and 24 of the next 27, to take the lead for good.

Romney's 2-yard TD pass to Simon tied it midway through the first quarter, Jake Oldroyd kicked a 24-yard field goal early in the second and Bushman's touchdown made it 17-7 at halftime. Romney threw touchdown passes of 41 yards to Aleva Hifo and 17 yards to Moroni Laulu-Pututau in the second half. Calvert completed 27 of 45 for 303 yards and three touchdowns and Antonio Gandy-Golden had 10 receptions for 162 yards and a score for the Flames. - BYU/AP College Football

Jaren Hall was 12-of-16 passing for 214 yards and ran for two touchdowns -- all before halftime -- and Baylor Romney threw for 191 yards and two scores to help BYU beat Utah State 42-14 on Saturday night. Hall, who finished with seven carries for 54 yards, suffered a concussion in the first half and was replaced by Romney to start the third quarter. Hall, a redshirt freshman who plays baseball as well for the Cougars, also left BYU's Oct. 12 game against South Florida -- his only other career start -- with concussion-like symptoms.

Utah State (4-4) went three-and-out on the game's opening possession before the Cougars ripped off an 11-play, 93-yard drive capped by Aleva Hifo's 6-yard touchdown run. Jordan Love's 26-yard TD pass to Siaosi Mariner tied it late in the first quarter but Hall scored on runs of 16 and 7 yards in the second quarter before Gerold Bright's 1-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left in the half made it 21-14 at the half. Romney led a seven-play, 75-yard drive to open the third quarter culminating with his 11-yard TD pass to Micah Simon and, after the Aggies went three-and-out, Romney's 1-yard scoring pass to Gunner Romney made it 35-14 going into the fourth. It was the first brother-to-brother touchdown in BYU (4-4) history. Love was 29-of-49 passing for 394 yards and a TD but threw three interceptions. - BYU/AP College Football
