Arizona quarterback Jordan McCloud is out for the rest of the season after suffering right knee and ankle injuries against UCLA. Wildcats coach Jedd Fisch said Monday McCloud is expected to have surgery this week. McCloud was injured in the fourth quarter of Arizona's 34-16 loss to UCLA Saturday night when his leg got twisted up while he was getting sacked. A transfer from South Florida, McCloud started two games after beginning the season as the backup to Gunner Cruz and Will Plummer. The sophomore threw for 481 yards and two touchdowns in three games this season. Fisch said Cruz, who started the first two games of the season, will start against Colorado on Saturday. - AP College Football

Here was Fisch's message about the Arizona quarterbacks battle following the spring game: "Get ready for a war. If they want to be the starting quarterback here in September, then they better be ready to compete. We've got another guy coming in, we've got a bunch of guys here, and I hope they're ready for a lot of battles to see who's going to come out on top." Gunner Cruz and returner Will Plummer split most of the snap in spring ball. That other "guy" is ex-South Florida starter Jordan McCloud, who is one of three quarterbacks Arizona has added via transfer portal; Cruz (Washington State) and walk-on Nick Moore (Oregon State) are the others.

McCloud was the only quarterback on Arizona's roster who didn't participate in spring ball, so he's behind schedule in terms of understanding verbiage and experiencing Fisch's offense first-hand. But McCloud stayed engaged as much as he could, and even attended a spring practice as a spectator. In two seasons at South Florida, McCloud completed 244 of 418 passes for 2,770 yards and 21 touchdowns while being intercepted 10 times. He also rushed for 357 yards and five touchdowns. In the final game of the 2020 season against Central Florida, McCloud went 32 for 46 for 404 yards and five all-purpose touchdowns. - Arizona Star News

Arizona has added another quarterback to the mix via the NCAA transfer portal. Jordan McCloud, who started 16 games at South Florida over the past two seasons, announced Saturday that he has committed to the Wildcats. McCloud joins Washington State transfer Gunner Cruz as new faces in the UA quarterback room. They will compete with returnees Will Plummer and Kevin Doyle for the starting job. After redshirting in 2018, McCloud appeared in 20 games for USF over the past two seasons. He completed 244 of 418 passes (58.4%) for 2,770 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 357 yards and five scores. - Arizona Star News

Jordan McCloud threw for a touchdown, Noah Johnson ran for another, and South Florida beat The Citadel 27-6 on Saturday night to give Jeff Scott a win in his first game as a head coach. Scott, who had served as Clemson's co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach since 2015, replaced the fired Charlie Strong in December 2019. McCloud hit DeVontres Dukes for a 10-yard touchdown to make it 7-3 with 49 seconds left in the first quarter and USF (1-0) led the rest of the way. Colby Kinter, who opened the scoring with a 45-yard field goal, made a 41-yarder to pull The Citadel (0-1) within a point with 11:08 left in the second quarter but Omarion Dollison recovered a botched punt for a touchdown before Johnson's 9-yard scoring run made it 20-3 at halftime. McCloud and Johnson split time at quarterback for USF. McCloud was 11-of-16 passing for 68 yards, and Johnson completed 3 of 4 for 24 yards and had 49 yards rushing on seven carries. Kelly Joiner added eight carries for 87 yards for the Bulls, including a 3-yard TD to cap the scoring midway through the fourth quarter. - South Florida/AP College Football

Third-year sophomore incumbent Jordan McCloud is expected to take the first snap Saturday when USF opens its season at home against the Citadel. First-year coach Jeff Scott said he plans to announce his starter at some point Thursday, when he releases his inaugural 2020 depth chart. Scott informed the quarterbacks of his decision Sunday night and told the team the following morning. The Tampa Bay Times has learned McCloud, a Plant High alumnus who started the final 10 games last season, will start. Depending on how the game transpires, Armwood High alumnus Noah Johnson and North Carolina transfer Cade Fortin also could play against the Bulldogs. "It's still a very close competition," Scott told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "It's gonna go on, in my estimation, for a couple of weeks...My goal is to really have that solidified by the Cincinnati game Oct. 3." - Tampa Tribune

South Florida fired coach Charlie Strong on Sunday after three seasons in which the Bulls won fewer games each year. USF made the move two days after finishing a 4-8 season with a blowout loss to rival UCF. That left Strong 21-16 overall but 4-14 since starting the 2018 season with seven straight victories. "I have tremendous respect for Coach Strong and his dedication to recruiting and developing young men of talent and character and leading them with integrity. He has represented USF with dignity and class and we wish Coach and his family the very best," USF athletic director Michael Kelly said in a statement.

The former Texas and Louisville coach was hired by USF to replace Willie Taggart after the 2016 season. Strong led the Bulls to a 10-2 record in that first year in Tampa behind star quarterback Quinton Flowers. After starting 7-0 in 2018, the Bulls ended the season with six straight losses, and this season has been filled with lopsided losses. The 59-year-old Strong, who was a longtime defensive coordinator in the Southeastern Conference with plenty of recruiting ties to the state of Florida, is 74-53 overall in 10 seasons as a head coach. USF has been playing major college football for 23 years and has had some high-level success, with 10 seasons of eight victories or more and 10 bowl appearances. - AP College Football

Jordan McCloud passed for three touchdowns and ran for another and South Florida rolled past Connecticut 48-22 on Saturday, the Bulls' eighth straight victory over the Huskies. After a three-and-out on their first possession, the Bulls (2-3, 1-1 American) scored touchdowns on their next four, beginning with McCloud's 12-yard pass to Bryce Miller with 3:22 left in the first quarter. McCloud threw a 13-yard score to Randall St. Felix and ran 26 yards for another with under two minutes left in the half as USF went in front 27-14. McCloud had 136 yards passing with two touchdowns and 51 yards rushing and a score by halftime.

A 12-yard TD pass to Miller made it 34-14 in the third before place-kicker Spencer Schrader took a fake field-goal attempt 22 yards for a touchdown and a 41-14 lead in the fourth. McCloud finished 11-of-21 passing for 157 yards but was intercepted twice. Two of his TD passes went to Miller. Jordan Cronkite rushed for 148 yards on 20 carries, his sixth career 100-yard game. USF piled up 313 yards on the ground and outgained UConn 503-293 in total yards. The defense had five sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Mike Beaudry was 18-of-29 passing with 209 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Mensah added two rushing scores for UConn (1-4, 0-2). He finished with 70 yards to become the ninth Husky to reach 2,000 career rushing yards at 2,001. UConn's losing streak against FBS teams reached 19. - South Florida/AP College Football
