  12/20/21 - RB Kevin MensahSr/2022, Connecticut, 5-09, 206 (DS#67 RB) + More +

Running back Kevin Mensah, the fourth-leading rusher in UConn history, has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal. Mensah had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2018-19, but saw his role diminish as a senior as freshman Nate Carter took over as the Huskies primary ball-carrier. While he still has a year of eligibility left due to the COVID-19 season, Mensah's departure was expected. He was honored on Senior Day last month against Houston, the final game of the Huskies 1-11 season. The 5-foot-9, 202-pound Mensah finished his UConn career with 2,933 rushing yards, ranking behind Donald Brown (3,800), Terry Caulley (3,187) and Jordan Todman (3,179). - CT Post

UConn running back Kevin Mensah isn't quite sure what his career rushing numbers are or how they might stack up when his been around forever college football career ends in about four months. Which is probably healthy, because Mensah's body of work through four years and three seasons, which leaves him in line to become one of the program's all-time leaders, won't necessarily help him remain the Huskies' top ball carrier when the team resumes competition Aug. 28 at Fresno State and beyond. "He can't get complacent and can't rest on his past accomplishments to think he's got the job won," coach Randy Edsall said at the Huskies' media day event last month. "But he's been productive. I think the challenge to Kevin is taking his game to another level. … He's maturing, and he needs to continue to mature. I'll just be honest. He hasn't developed as the type of leader that I would expect (from) a guy in his situation. Gotten better, but still has a ways to go."

Mensah, a fifth-year senior, will have to prove himself again on a team with options it has not had the luxury of drawing from since his 2017 arrival, which coincided with the return of Edsall. Rob Burns, a graduate transfer from the University of Miami, and Nate Carter, a freshman from Rochester, N.Y., are Mensah's main backfield competition. Edsall wants Mensah to work a little more efficiently and talk a little less. - CT Post

The UConn football team cut its spring practices short due to positive COVID-19 test results among Tier I personnel and subsequent contact tracing protocols. "Just been informed that we won't be able to finish the last 3 practices of the Spring due to some positive tests of COVID-19," Edsall said in a tweet that was later deleted. The Huskies held 12 of 15 scheduled practices. The final three practices will not be rescheduled. The Huskies were one of the few teams to hold their 2020 spring session before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down sports across the country. - Hartford Courant

2020 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Kevin Mensah (Sr.), Connecticut,...Mensah rushed for over 1,000-yards for the second-straight season in 2019, marking only the second time that a Husky (Jordan Todman in 2009 and 2010) eclipsed 1,000-yards rushing in consecutive years. Mensah's five rushing TD's against UMass on October 26 marked the highest single-game total in the nation this year and he was honored as the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his performance against the Minutemen, which included 164-yards on the ground. The senior has accumulated 2619 rushing yards in 35 career games for the Huskies. - UConn Football

UConn has agreed to a multi-year television deal that will put most of its home football games on CBS Sports Network, the school announced Monday. The university did not disclose the financial details of the deal between CBS and Learfield IMG College, which holds UConn’s athletics multimedia rights, but said it is worth seven figures over four years. Under the contract, the network plans to televise four UConn home games in 2020 (Indiana, Liberty, Middle Tennessee and Army) and all home games from 2021-2023. This will be the Huskies' first season as a football independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference. Most of UConn's sports teams will be playing in the Big East, which signed a 12-year, $500 million media deal with Fox in 2013. - AP College Football

Kevin Mensah ran for 164 yards and a career-high five touchdowns and Connecticut breezed to a 56-35 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday. Mensah sandwiched scoring runs of 17 and 2 yards around a 1-yard TD plunge by UMass' Bilal Ally to give the Huskies (2-6) a 14-7 lead after one quarter. The Minutemen (1-7) pulled even 7 seconds into the second quarter on Andrew Brito's 40-yard scoring strike to Jermaine Johnson Jr., but UConn scored three touchdowns over a 7:26 span - Art Thompkins' 25-yard run, Mensah's 5-yard run and Jack Zergiotis' 57-yard scoring strike to Cameron Ross - to go up 35-14 with 5:41 left. Brito hit Samuel Emilus for a 14-yard score with 64 seconds remaining to pull within 35-21 at halftime. Ally's second TD from a yard out got the Minutemen within 35-28 early in the third quarter, but Quayvon Skanes hit Jay Rose for a 15-yard TD on his only pass of the game to push the UConn lead to 42-28 heading into the final quarter. It was Rose's first career TD catch.

Mensah put the game out of reach with TD runs of 14 and 3 yards. The last UConn player to rush for five TDs in a game was Wilbur Gilliard against James Madison in 1993. Gilberto Torres capped the scoring with a 19-yard TD run with 52 seconds left in the game. Thompkins finished with 135 yards rushing on 13 carries as the Huskies piled up 326 yards on the ground. Zergiotis completed 18 of 27 passes for 198 yards with one interception. Freshman Cameron Ross had nine catches for a career-high 120 yards. He was the first Huskies receiver to top the 100-yard mark this season. Ally finished with 159 yards rushing and Brito completed 20 of 40 passes for 239 yards with an interception for UMass. - Connecticut/AP College Football
