2023 ACC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Payton Wilson, NC State,...Wilson eclipsed the 400-career tackle mark in the final week of the regular season, just one of five active FBS players to achieve the feat. Throughout his storied career for the Wolfpack, Wilson has accumulated stats that rank him inside the top 10 of active FBS players in total tackles, tackles per game, solo tackles, solo tackles per game, assisted tackles, assisted tackles-for-loss, total tackles-for-loss, and tackles-for-loss per game. Wilson leads the conference and ranks fifth nationally this season with 138 tackles and an average of 11.5 tackles per game and has tallied the most total tackles for a Wolfpack player in a single season since Earl Wolff had 145 in 2012.

On nine occasions this season, Wilson recorded double-digit stops, highlighted by a 16-tackle game against Miami. Wilson also added 6.0 sacks and 17.5 tackles-for-loss, with his tackles behind the line of scrimmage the most among ACC defenders. The Hillsborough, North Carolina, native has added a trio of interceptions, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries to his resume. Over a four-game stretch against Virginia, Louisville, Marshall, and Duke, Wilson recorded at least one-half sack and 10 tackles in each game, highlighted by a two-sack showing against Louisville and a 14-tackle game versus Marshall. Wilson has been named a semifinalist for both the Butkus and Bednarik Awards, while also earning a spot as a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. Wilson has earned ACC Linebacker of the Week honors five times throughout the season as well as the Butkus Linebacker of the Month award in September. - ACC Football

When Payton Wilson took the field this past week for the first time with his teammates, his raw emotions bubbled to the surface. His latest injury, and the time spent in recovery, has allowed Wilson to reset himself mentally going into the 2022 season. "He's in a really good place mentally right now," Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren said. "From the team standpoint, everybody's pulling for him. He's one of the best players in the country when he's healthy, so it's nice to have him back." One place he's centered his energy is increasing his football intelligence through film study. Wilson started to understand other teams' tendencies in addition to his own, and he worked on understanding his role on a given play call, and where opponents' weak spots are.

But he's not planning on letting that more cerebral approach dampen his high-energy pace for which he's been known on the field. "It's always good to have a guy like him back out there on our field, especially with his type of energy," Ingle said. "Payton brings a different type of fire to our defense." Wilson said he is elated to have the opportunity to play with his teammates again. With 17 returning starters - 10 on defense - N.C. State has high hopes for a program that hasn't won an ACC championship since 1979. Wilson's return - and his continued health - will be a big piece of that puzzle. "I don't really look forward," Wilson said. "I've learned that due to injuries. They happen when they happen, and you can't control them. If you just take it one day at a time and try to do what you're doing that day the best you can. That's all you can do." - Raleigh News Observer

Linebacker Payton Wilson, the leading tackler in the ACC a year ago, didn't shy away from the expectations for his team, especially on his side of the ball. With 10 starters back, N.C. State's defense will be more experienced and battle tested than ever. Having played so many snaps and shown flashes last year, Wilson knows the chance is there for them to be one of the best Wolfpack defenses in a long time. "We want to be the best," Wilson said. "I think we can be the best defense in the ACC, if not the nation. Being plagued with injuries is something that hurt us in the past, but it was a blessing because guys who are now juniors were stuck out there as freshmen and now have playing experience."

Wilson was one of those players thrown into the fire as a redshirt freshman in 2019, when the team finished 4-8. He learned that season that "talent isn't enough" to get by. He has since become a student of the game, along with the rest of the veteran guys who had to learn on the fly. Now they know what to do and, most importantly, what needs to be done. Clemson, a divisional foe, has long sat on the throne atop the ACC. The Tigers come to Raleigh on Sept. 25, an early chance to see if the Pack is all talk or ready to take that next step. The Pack will find out if it is contenders or pretenders pretty early on in the season. "Living up to that expectation, it's not pressure," Wilson said. "It's more excitement. We want to be there, we want to knock the big man off the table." - Raleigh News Observer

Wilson came off the bench as a freshman and still led the team in tackles. In 2020 he led the team in tackles and interceptions despite missing two games. In his last game, versus Georgia Tech, he led the team with 11 tackles despite playing with two dislocated shoulders (more on that later), showing the type of throwback grit Doeren loves. It's that type of determination, plus the snub, that makes Wilson think he's the best of the best. "I think I'm the best defensive college football player in America," Wilson said. "I don't think I received that recognition. It's just something to fuel me this offseason to go out there next year and make sure there's no doubt about it." An upset, ticked off, motivated, Payton Wilson is a scary sight for opponents in 2021. As a first-time starter in 2020, Wilson had to adjust to playing so many snaps. He said defensive coordinator Tony Gibson devised a scheme that simplified things for him.

Last year, Wilson admitted, he knew his assignment on every snap. This year, while watching during the spring, he has learned the role of the other 10 guys. Doeren laughed when asked if fans have seen Wilson's best football? "No we haven't," Doeren said. "He's got so much he can do better. He could have made a lot more plays. He could have and he'll tell you that." For a guy who averaged 10.8 tackles a game, what more was there to do? For starters, Doeren explained, Wilson wasn't always "looking at the right stuff." Because he's so fast, Wilson can quickly explode to the ball carrier and bring him down after a two-yard gain. This year, Doeren said, Wilson won't waste any movements and can make stops in the backfield for a two-yard loss. "There's times when his eyes were in the wrong place and he got away with it," Doeren said. "Had he looked at this maybe he would have gotten an interception or he definitely would have had a sack. I expect his production to be better." - Raleigh News Observer

The N.C. State defense got a big boost on Friday with the announcement that All-ACC linebacker Payton Wilson will be returning for his junior season. Wilson, who led the ACC in tackles with 108, which was the third highest total in FBS. The Orange High School graduate just completed his redshirt sophomore season, but is NFL Draft eligible since he is three years removed from high school. Instead of testing out the next level, Wilson will return to the Pack, who finished 8-4 this season, falling to Kentucky in the Gator Bowl last weekend. - Raleigh News Observer
