  05/04/21 - RB *Jaret PattersonrJr/2021, Buffalo, 5-07, 195 (DS#8 RB) + More +

Jaret Patterson now heads to the NFL. While the University at Buffalo running back wasn't selected in the NFL Draft, it wasn't long before he still found an opportunity. Patterson told the News in a text message that he will join the Washington Football team as an undrafted free agent. He's one of three Bulls who signed or will sign as free agents with teams on Saturday. Kayode Awosika, an offensive lineman, posted on his Twitter account that he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, and UB announced that wide receiver Antonio Nunn signed with the Atlanta Falcons. "Lol this only more motivation!!" he wrote. "More fuel to the fire!! This ain't nothing new to me!! I know god is doing this for a reason!!" However, a few hours later, he posted a photo of himself as a child, standing behind a mannequin that wore a burgundy, yellow and white Washington jersey. Patterson emerged in the last two seasons at UB as one of the nation's most productive running backs. - Buffalo News

Patterson, a junior running back who has announced his intentions to enter the NFL draft, was named to the second team by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, which joined the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Sporting News. He led the nation in rushing, at 178.7 yards per game and is tied for second in the nation in rushing touchdowns with 19, which equaled his own school record. - Buffalo News

  12/22/20 - RB *Jaret PattersonrJr/2021, Buffalo, 5-07, 195 (DS#8 RB) + More +

Buffalo's Jaret Patterson is expected to play against Marshall in the Camellia Bowl on Friday, a week after one of the nation's leading rushers hurt his right knee. Coach Lance Leipold said Patterson should be "ready and able to go" after the junior worked out individually on the sideline during practice Tuesday. Leipold said it remains to be determined whether Patterson would wear a protective brace on the knee he hurt in the third quarter of a 38-28 loss to Ball State in the Mid-American Conference championship last Friday.

The coach wouldn't rule out the possibility of Patterson seeing limited playing time. "I guess go is go. Would I see a little more rotation? Possibly," Leipold said. Patterson was hurt while being tackled for a loss and returned briefly in the fourth quarter while wearing a brace. He finished with a season-low 47 yards on 18 carries but scored his 19th touchdown rushing to match the school single-season record he set last year. Overall, Patterson leads the nation by averaging 178.7 yards rushing per outing, and he ranks 10th with 1,072 yards despite Buffalo (5-1) playing just six games this season. - AP College Football

Ball State won the MAC championship by limiting Buffalo's Jaret Patterson to 47 yards on 18 carries. Even after that pedestrian performance, Patterson still owns the FBS rushing lead by over 16 yards per game. Patterson has run for 1,072 yards and averages 178.67 yards per game. Colorado's Jarek Broussard ranks second with 162.6 yards rushing per game. - AP College Football

Buffalo star Jaret Patterson left the Mid-American Conference championship game in the third quarter with what appeared to be a right leg issue. Patterson was able to leave the field under his own power, but he did not play the rest of that series and remained sidelined for the start of Buffalo's next possession as well. The 23rd-ranked Bulls trailed Ball State 38-21 when Patterson exited, and the Cardinals had held him to just 45 yards on 17 carries. It has been a dazzling season for Patterson, who rushed for 1,025 yards and 18 touchdowns in Buffalo's first five games. He opened the scoring with a TD run Friday night as well, but Ball State has kept him mostly contained. - AP College Football

Jaret Patterson ran for 105 yards and matched a major-college football record by reaching 1,000 yards for the season in five games as No. 24 Buffalo routed Akron 56-7 on Saturday as a tune-up for the Mid-American Conference championship. Patterson scored two touchdowns before halftime, bringing his season totals to 1,025 yards and 18 rushing TDs for the Bulls (5-0). He is the 12th player in FBS history to surpass 1,000 yards in as many games. Kevin Marks Jr. led the Bulls with a career-high 175 yards and two touchdowns. Marks went over 100 yards and scored twice in the first half as Buffalo (5-0) built a 35-0 lead against Akron (1-5).

The Bulls scored on defense for the fourth time this season when Tyrone Hill blocked a field goal and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Buffalo finished with 428 yards rushing. Buffalo's passing attack found the end zone for the first time in three games when Kyle Vantrease connected with Trevor Wilson for a 52-yard touchdown early in the third quarter. The Bulls ran for 21 straight touchdowns prior to that. Jonzell Norrils scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter for Akron. Buffalo had shutout Akron for nine straight quarters going back to 2018. - Buffalo/AP College Football

Buffalo's Jaret Patterson tied an FBS record on Saturday when he became the 12th player to surpass 1,000 yards rushing in the first five games of the season. In his first action since becoming the fourth FBS player to rush for more than 400 yards in a game, Patterson topped 1,000 yards on a 40-yard run in the second quarter of the 24th-ranked Bulls' game against Akron. Stanford's Bryce Love in 2017 was the last FBS player to rush for more than 1,000 yards in his first five games of the season. Heisman Trophy winners Marcus Allen, Barry Sanders and Ricky Williams also are among the players to accomplish the feat. Named this week as one of 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, Patterson entered the game leading the nation in rushing yards per game (230) and yards per carry (8.6). - AP College Football

A national ranking isn't merely a byproduct. Now, it's a consequential moment for the UB football team. The Bulls (4-0) are ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time in program history, and open the week at No. 24 in the AP Top 25 poll, which was released Sunday. "It validates things about the progress we continue to make, the consistencies we've shown and some of the performances in the national spotlight, on the national television games, that people have taken notice," Leipold said. "This is a unique season, as we know. You probably see a few more Group of Five schools get these opportunities. But to be in that type of conversation, from where we were five, six years ago, definitely says a lot." AP Top 25 voters gave UB 145 votes, ahead of No. 25 Wisconsin (115 votes). The Bulls are one of nine teams that remain undefeated this season, and eight of those teams are ranked this week. - Buffalo News

The Heisman hype for Patterson continues to grow, in the wake of his astonishing 409-yard game Nov. 28 against Kent State, in which he tied a Football Bowl Subdivision record with eight touchdowns in a game. That performance, along with Patterson's consistent production, has put him on the map as one of the nation's top players. "It's definitely an honor, a blessing, to be considered in the conversation," Patterson said of the Heisman chatter. "Just growing up, loving the game, you look at TV and you see guys who are Heisman finalists. You never think you will be in consideration. But you have to keep working, put your head down, control what you can control. That's my approach. Keep working and good things will happen."

Patterson entered the weekend first in the nation in rushing yards per game (230), tied for second in rushing touchdowns (16) and fifth in total yards. Patterson is the second all-time leading rusher for the Bulls (3,732 yards), and he needs 80 yards in order to reach his third 1,000-yard rushing season at UB. If he cracks the 1,000-yard plateau Dec. 12 against Akron, Patterson will be the 12th player in FBS history to reach it in five games. "It's deserving for him to be in this conversation," UB coach Lance Leipold said. "His numbers speak for themselves. Do I say he's going to win the Heisman Trophy? No, that's not it. "But to be in conversations, and I don't know how many people get these ballots … do these ballots have three people? But you look at the numbers and the consistency and where it's at, I think he deserves it." - Buffalo News

The undefeated Buffalo Bulls clinched the Mid-American Conference East Division football title without playing a down on Friday. The school announced its game at Ohio on Saturday was canceled and declared a no contest because the Bobcats' roster was depleted as a result of players testing positive for COVID-19. Buffalo is 4-0, and needed a win over Ohio (2-1) to clinch the title and a berth in the MAC championship game at Detroit on Dec. 18. With one game left for both schools after this weekend, Ohio was the only division rival in position to still win the East. Ohio also had its game against Miami, Ohio, on Nov. 17 canceled due to COVID-19. - AP College Football

Four games into his junior season, the 5-foot-9, 195-pound Patterson has essentially re-written the Mid-American Conference program's record book, while coming off his most impressive national attention-grabbing moment so far. In a 70-41 win over Kent State on Saturday, Patterson finished with 409 yards rushing, the second most in FBS history and 18 shy of Samaje Perine's single-game record for Oklahoma in 2014. And he scored eight touchdowns rushing, matching the FBS record set by Illinois running back Howard Griffith in 1990. Arizona State's Kalen Ballage, in 2016, is the only other player to score eight touchdowns (seven rushing and one receiving) in a major college game.

Coming off 301 yards rushing and four TDs in a 42-17 win at Bowling Green, Patterson joined Texas star Ricky Williams (1996) in becoming just the second player to top 300 yards rushing in consecutive games. Overall, Patterson's 920 yards rushing this season rank fifth in the nation, with the four players ahead of him having played nine or more games. Reminded about his emotional breakdown at Eastern Michigan, Patterson acknowledged he wouldn't have envisioned this kind of production during one of the lowest moments of his life. But the memory of being overlooked is what drives him. "It made me work even harder," Patterson said. "(Winters) always used to tell me, you only need one school to love you. And I knew whatever school me and my brother had the same offer, we were going to give them everything." - Niagara Gazette

For the past three seasons, Patterson has been UB's most productive running back. He finished fifth in the nation last season in rushing yards, but his 409-yard, eight-touchdown game Saturday in a 70-41 win against Kent State has made the college football world take notice of the diminutive running back. "The last time the Bulls scored as many as 70 points in a game? It was an 81-0 win over Hobart in 1918. In the middle of the Spanish flu epidemic. Must be something about pandemic years." Patterson has established himself as one of the nation's most productive running backs this season. He is fifth in the nation in rushing with 920 yards on 107 carries, and leads the nation in rushing yards per game (230). He's tied with Iowa State's Breece Hall for second in the nation with 16 rushing touchdowns - he and Hall each have scored more touchdowns than 31 FBS teams this season.

"What makes Jaret special, not just him as an athlete but as a person, it's the humbleness he carries, the hunger that he has each and every week to be even better, and the gratitude he has to his teammates that help him get there," UB coach Lance Leipold said Saturday. "When your best players are your best practice players, the most humble, the best in the community at doing those things, those are things that are a coach's dream and things that winning programs are built upon." - Buffalo News

The University at Buffalo football team moved closer to a national ranking Sunday in the Associated Press Top 25, with 56 points, good for second among the teams also receiving votes. Liberty is No. 25 with 67 points, followed by North Carolina with 65 and then UB. The Bulls (4-0) rocketed from having received just three points last week after a 70-41 victory against Kent State that featured eight rushing touchdowns and 409 rushing yards from Jaret Patterson. UB received 29 points in the coaches poll, which was seventh among the others receiving votes. Liberty, which was No. 25 in the coaches poll as well, had 87 points.   Buffalo's Jaret Patterson ran for more than 300 yards one week and over 400 the next. When the Bulls visit Ohio on Saturday, Patterson will be coming off the most productive back-to-back games by a running back in Football Bowl Subdivision history. Patterson's 409 yards against Kent State rank No. 2 on the FBS all-time list behind Samaje Perine’s 427 for Oklahoma against Kansas in 2014. Patterson's eight rushing touchdowns tied the FBS record set by Illinois' Howard Griffith against Southern Illinois in 1990. In his game against Bowling Green on Nov. 17, he ran for 301 yards and four touchdowns.

He smashed the FBS record for rushing total in consecutive games. His 710 yards broke the 22-year-old mark of 668 set by Texas' Ricky Williams, who ran for 318 yards against Rice and 350 against Iowa State. Patterson's 12 touchdowns in two games also is an FBS record. The junior leads the nation with his average of 230 yards over four games. His 16 touchdowns are the most behind Najee Harris' 17 in eight games for Alabama. Buffalo finished with 515 rushing yards, the most since Kentucky ran for 517 against Louisville on Nov. 30, 2019. - AP College Football

Jaret Patterson tied an FBS single-game record with eight rushing touchdowns and had the second-biggest rushing total with 409 yards to help Buffalo beat Kent State 70-41 on Saturday. Patterson reached the TD mark set by Illinois running back Howard Griffith on Sept. 22, 1990, against Southern Illinois. He came within 18 yards of Samaje Perine's single-game rushing record of 427 yards for Oklahoma against Kansas on Nov. 22, 2014. Patterson carried it 36 times for an 11.8 yards-per-carry average against the Golden Flashes. Patterson is the first Division-I player to rush for more than 300 yards in consecutive games since Texas star Ricky Williams did it in 1996.

Patterson ran for four touchdowns and 301 yards - a school record until Saturday - in a 42-17 win last week against Bowling Green. Patterson scored on runs of 3, 31, 42, 49, 1, 7, 11 and 58 yards against Kent State. "Congratulations, big fella. Incredible performance by you today. Welcome to the eight touchdown club," Griffith said in a video posted on Twitter. A 5-foot-9, 200-pound junior, Patterson set the previous Mid-American Conference record of six rushing touchdowns in a win last year against Bowling Green. Patterson set up Buffalo (4-0, 4-0) with a 62-yard run on his first carry of the game to the Kent State 3 and scored on the next play. The Bulls never trailed. With a school-record 70 points, the Bulls are averaging 50.8 points a game. Twice they've scored 42 points, their lowest-scoring efforts this season. Kent State (3-1, 3-1) was led by Dustin Crum with 343 yards passing and three scores. - Buffalo/AP College Football

Playing a bit under the radar at Buffalo, Jaret Patterson has put up rushing numbers that demand attention. Patterson broke his own school record with 301 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-17 win at Bowling Green in the third of his team's three straight mid-week Mid-American Conference games. Granted, the first 300-yard rushing game in the nation came against the worst run defense in the Football Bowl Subdivision, but Patterson has produced consistently against almost everybody. The 5-foot-9, 195-pound Patterson has run for at least 100 yards in 13 of his 30 games. His 3,323 yards make him the second-leading career rusher among juniors, behind Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard. Patterson is the No. 2 all-time rusher at Buffalo behind Branden Oliver, who had 4,049 yards from 2010-13. Patterson is averaging 170.3 yards through three games and 7.2 yards per carry. - AP College Football

The Covid-19 pandemic has put much of the University at Buffalo football program's offseason regimen on hold, but it hasn't stopped Jaret Patterson from gaining attention as a potential NFL Draft candidate in 2021. Patterson has spent the spring in Maryland, where he is training for the 2020 season and the start of UB's fall practices, but says he isn't paying attention to the draft chatter. "I really don't have time to reflect on that," Patterson recently told the News. "It's already going by pretty fast. I was just in my freshman year and I'm trying to take it one day at a time. I don't listen to the outside noise. I listen to things with my head down and it's tunnel vision. How can I improve, on and off the field? Each and every day."

Patterson isn't embracing the speculation regarding his future. Instead, he is taking a holistic approach in preparing to take the next step. He's immediately focusing on the 2020 season, not the 2021 NFL Draft. UB's season is scheduled to open Sept. 5 at Kansas State. "I really want to improve in all areas of my game," Patterson said. "I don't focus on improving one thing. I want to improve every aspect. "I really want to win a MAC championship. That's something I want to do for this team and for the university. That will help make my next step stronger, being a good leader and a good teammate. Doing the same thing I've been doing, and doing more of that." - Buffalo News

The fate of football season, college and pros, remains up in the air. But on Thursday, Ford Field lost its first football event of the year, with news the Mid-American Conference media kickoff will be shifting to a virtual event for 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The media days will be a two-day online event, sometime this summer, the conference announced Thursday. The Mid-American Conference has moved its media days to a virtual platform for 2020.

"A virtual media preview will provide the opportunity for increased exposure for our coaches, student-athletes, member institutions and the conference as a whole," MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in statement. "This will allow the membership to not only connect with the media but students, fans and alumni from all over. The MAC will continue to look for innovative ways to expand its reach." MAC football media days have taken place annually at Ford Field for more than a decade, with the lone exception being 2017, when they were held at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. - Detroit News

A strong 2019 season brought UB's overall record to 24-15 since 2017, marking the program's first time having three consecutive seasons of being at or above a .500 winning percentage during its Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) era. This past fall also produced the Bulls first taste of back-to-back bowl seasons, after just two coming from 1999-2013. The team also placed a program record 12 players on the All-Mid-American Conference team. One of the biggest factors in that success was tailback Jaret Patterson, who rewrote the UB record book last fall. Patterson's sophomore campaign saw him setting single-season program records for rushing yards (1,799), yards from scrimmage (2,008), rushing touchdowns (19) and total touchdowns (20). The two-time All-MAC selection ranked fifth in the nation in rushing and was one of only six players to account for over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and score 20 or more TDs.

Patterson and the Bulls were nearly done with the first two phases of their 2020 offseason schedule. After a great winter conditioning period in the newly minted Murchie Family Fieldhouse, UB would open up the spring season by getting a good portion of its 15 scheduled spring practices, ahead of the annual spring game slated for April 3. But before they knew it, just like everyone else in the nation, the sweeping impact of the COVID-19 outbreak picked off the Bulls' spring schedule. Patterson does think the abbreviated spring will pay off for UB this fall, though, simply because of the advantage it'll have over other programs. "We really got a head start because we started (earlier) than most programs so that's a good thing," Patterson said in a conversation on Twitter. "But definitely missing out on them other practices and reps are big. I don't really think it will affect us, we just have to make them (up) whenever (we) get back to things." - Niagara Gazette

Buffalo coach Lance Leipold has agreed to a new five-year contract for the second consecutive offseason, this time after leading the Bulls to their first bowl victory in school history. Leipold's new contract runs through the 2024 season, extending his previous deal by one year. The deal is a reward for building Buffalo into a consistent winner. With a 31-32 record over five seasons, Leipold already ranks fourth on the school list for coaching victories, and Buffalo's 24 wins over the past three seasons lead the Mid-American Conference over that span. The Bulls closed last season with an 8-5 record, including a 31-9 win over Charlotte in the Bahamas Bowl. It was the school's first win in four bowl appearances. Leipold was named MAC coach of the year in 2018 after Buffalo finished 10-4 and set a single-season school record for wins. - AP College Football

History was made on Saturday afternoon as the University at Buffalo football team won the first bowl game in school history by defeating Charlotte, 31-9, in the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl played in Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas. Sophomore running back Jaret Patterson was named the Offensive Most Valuable player after rushing for 173 yards and two touchdowns in the game. While Patterson paced the offensive attack, it was the defense that shined in the Bahamas sun. Charlotte, one of top rushing teams in Conference USA, and 25th nationally, was limited to just 80 yards on the ground. Junior defensive end Malcolm Koonce was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player after tallying five tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.

The Bulls wasted little time getting on the board as they scored on their first possession. Kyle Vantrease connected with Antonio Nunn on a 12-yard fade pattern to give UB a 7-0 lead with 9:12 left in the first quarter. Vantrease called his own number with a quarterback sneak, with three minutes left in the half, to give the Bulls a 14-0 lead. Linebacker James Patterson made one of the biggest defensive plays of the game when he came up with an interception on Charlotte's first play of its ensuing possession. The Bulls were able to convert that into a 31-yard Alex McNulty field goal to take a 17-0 lead at the half. Buffalo extended its lead to 24-0 on a 6-yard Patterson touchdown run, his first of the game, with 5:22 left in the third quarter. - Buffalo Football
