2022 PRESEASON BUTKUS AWARD WATCHLIST: Sherrod Greene, South Carolina,...Greene, a 6-1, 233-pounder from Rocky Mount, N.C., returns to Carolina for a sixth season after having both his 2020 and 2021 seasons cut short prematurely due to season-ending injuries. He has appeared in just four games over the past two seasons after logging 35 contests including 24 starts from 2017-19. He totaled a career-best 73 tackles as a sophomore in 2018 and collected 6.5 tackles for loss during the 2019 campaign. - South Carolina Football

The pass was completed and a teammate already had South Carolina receiver Josh Vann wrapped, but Sherrod Greene ran over to help get Vann to the ground. Quarterback Luke Doty took another snap and couldn't find his man, so he kept the ball and began to run. Greene, a mischievous grin stretched around his mouthpiece, bee-lined toward him on an arrow's trajectory. Doty knew he was supposed to step out of bounds and did, which was fine. Greene wasn't really going to smack him. Probably. "Pretty much, my main goal is just staying healthy," South Carolina's "super senior" sixth-year linebacker said. "I know if I have a full complete season, I got big plans ahead of me." His energy and unfettered enthusiasm in the Gamecocks' Garnet and Black Spring Game weren't surprising.

It's what head coach Shane Beamer wants to see no matter if it's a meaningless scrimmage. But after playing in only four games over the past two seasons, Greene learned that every chance to play can't be discounted. He's spent far too much time on the sideline, willing to give up anything he'd be asked to sacrifice if he could get just one more play. "Having back-to-back season-ending injuries, it can take a toll on you. I had good support in my corner," he said. "My family and my mom kept my head on straight. It wasn't as bad as it may seem, but it was a good trial for me." - The Post and Courier

Sherrod Greene was on his way to becoming a star linebacker at South Carolina. Injuries knocked that path off course the past two years. In 2020, Greene fractured his hip in the season opener against Tennessee and missed the rest of the year. In 2021, the North Carolina native suffered a right ankle injury on the second play of the Sept. 18 game against Georgia and was lost for the season. Rather than calling it a career or possibly entering the NFL Draft, Greene announced in December that he would be back at USC for a sixth season. "Got so much left to give!! I'm not done yet," Greene said in a Twitter post two days before Christmas. Greene opened up this spring about how hard the struggles the past two years have been.

He credited those in his inner circle for keeping his spirits up during a challenging portion of his career. "It was tough because the year before that I broke my hip," Greene said. "Just having back-to-back season-ending injuries could take a toll on me, but I had good support in my corner with my family, and my mom kept my head on straight. So it wasn't as bad as it may seem, but it was a good trial for me." The Gamecocks coaching staff brought Greene along slowly this spring and monitored him, and they'll do the same in the fall so he can be ready to play each week. - Rock Hill Herald

Weakside linebacker Sherrod Greene fractured his hip against Tennessee and will miss 4 to 6 weeks. "There's no surgery required," Muschamp said. "Unusual injury. They're going to take a look at it between 4-6 weeks and see what they do from there." Greene has started 25 of his career 36 games and has 131 career tackles with 9½ for loss. Damani Staley is set to start in place of Greene, with Mo Kaba behind him. Staley, a backup at middle and weakside linebacker, had a fantastic preseason when starting middle linebacker Ernest Jones was out. He had two tackles against Tennessee. - Birmingham News

South Carolina starting linebacker Sherrod Greene will miss at least the next four to six weeks with a fractured hip, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said Tuesday. Greene, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior who had started 23 of the past 26 games for South Carolina, was injured in the Gamecocks' 31-27 loss to No. 21 Tennessee Saturday night. Muschamp said Tuesday that Greene's injury was "unusual" and that Greene will not need surgery. Greene will get rechecked in about a month or so. "Hopefully, he'll be back within that time," the coach said. "But it's a very unusual injury." - AP College Football
