  12/08/21 - DE Owen Carney Jr.rSr/2022, Illinois, 6-3, 269 (DS#34 DE) + More +

2021 ALL-BIG TEN HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Owen Carney,...Carney had a career-high 6.5 sacks in 2021 to rank sixth in the Big Ten and third in the Big Ten West, while climbing to No. 9 on Illinois' all-time career sacks list (15.0). He totaled 46 tackles - another career high - and 8.0 TFLs on the season. - Illinois Football

Senior linebacker Owen Carney Jr. has been adjusting to a leadership role on the Illini defense. "Stepping into that role is new to me," Carney said. "I feel like I'm getting adjusted to it and every day has become more natural to me." It's no surprise that the Miami native is sliding into a position of authority for defensive coordinator Ryan Walters' unit despite a position switch to outside linebacker this offseason from defensive end. He's played all 21 games over the last two seasons, earning second-team all-Big Ten honors in 2020. Further, he ranked fourth in the conference with five sacks a season ago, three of which came during a 31-24 loss at Purdue on Oct. 31. - News Gazette Tribune

  03/29/21 - DE Owen Carney Jr.rSr/2022, Illinois, 6-3, 269 (DS#34 DE) + More +

Owen Carney Jr. recognizes he might display a more intense personality than some of his Illinois football teammates. "I'm a serious guy because when I hit the building, I just put on my pro hat," the senior outside linebacker said Thursday, during a Zoom call with media members. "I just try to lead by example and come every day to work. So if that's the vibe you get from me, I guess I'm doing it right." First-year Illini football coach Bret Bielema can be plenty serious in his own right. But his wavelengths appear to be just a bit different from those emitted by Carney. "Coach B, about 80 percent of the time you're probably going to see him with some flip-flops on," Carney said. True to form, Bielema appeared at a Big Ten tournament sendoff earlier this month for the Illinois men's basketball team wearing shorts and flip-flops. "Every account I have of Coach B is very new," Carney continued. "He does like to play music in his office and just vibe out. Sometimes he has different moods. He has the mellow to him. He has the reggae to him. And, of course, you know he's always going to wear his flip-flops." - News Gazette Tribune

Illinois' top defensive lineman from the 2020 season is reversing course - a piece of good news for coach Bret Bielema's first team. Defensive end Owen Carney Jr. on Sunday announced he's returning to the Illini for the 2021 campaign, 18 days after revealing he'd entered the transfer portal. Carney played in at least 10 games during each of his first three Illini seasons and 43 overall, including all eight this past season. The 6-foot-3, 260-pound native of Miami amassed 70 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 91/2 sacks during his Illini career. - News Gazette Tribune
