After opting out last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, big things are expected of Sooners' defensive lineman Jalen Redmond. Redmond said he's become much more comfortable over the last few weeks as OU ramps up in preparation for the Sept. 4 opener at Tulane. "I went through the spring and knocked some rust off. I'm still knocking rust off now," Redmond said. "I'm not the perfect player. I'm still working on it, still trying to get back into it. But I feel like it's doing good. I'm feeling good." In 2019, Redmond played 13 games, with four starts, leading OU with 6 1/2 sacks and finishing third on the team with 11 tackles for loss. "He's getting there," Sooners defensive line coach Calvin Thibodeaux said. "He's making every day count...I think he's really close. Every day he's out there working his butt off. He's adding value and we're happy with where he is right now." - Daily Oklahoman

  07/14/21 - DT Jalen RedmondrJr/2023, Oklahoma, 6-2, 291 (DS#17 DT) + More +

Redmond has been an intriguing player since his arrival from Midwest City, but his playing time has been drastically limited after health issues limited him to just three games as a freshman in 2018 and then he opted out last season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, though, Redmond looked like he was ready to fulfill those high expectations, with a team-leading 6.5 sacks and was third on the team with 11.0 tackles. Redmond has spent time both on the interior and edge for the Sooners, though the interior figures to be his preeminent spot in 2021, teaming with Perrion Winfrey to form a formidable duo on the inside. But with Redmond and Isaiah Thomas, OU has plenty of versatility up front and could mix and match things up there to take advantage of favorable matchups. - Daily Oklahoman

Jalen Redmond didn't want to do it anymore. After opting out before last season, there came a time when the OU defensive lineman wanted to forget about his preseason decision and go back all-in with the Sooners. Watching the success that his roommate, Isaiah Thomas, had in Thomas' breakout 2020 season made coming back that much more appealing. "There was a point that I wanted to come back," Redmond said. "But I knew I had to do what I had to do." Redmond didn't want to give up a season of playing football, especially when two years earlier he didn't know if he'd ever be able to play the sport again.

But the health problems that kept him out for all but three games his freshman season in 2018 were what led him to the decision to sit out in 2020. "With COVID and everything that was going on - it's a respiratory thing and with my past history with blood clots and those things, me and my family just thought it was the best idea to sit out," Redmond said. "It was, shoot, one of the hardest decisions I had to make, especially coming off the year before. It was a hard decision but I had to do what was right for my health and my body." - Daily Oklahoman

Redmond, who led OU with 6.5 sacks in 2019, will be back for the team's 2021 campaign. Redmond opted out of the 2020 season but practiced with OU ahead of the Cotton Bowl and assisted with the Sooners' scout team. Redmond, a Midwest City native, was a five-star prospect, according to 247Sports.com, coming out of high school. He played in 16 games over his first two seasons on campus. - Norman Transcript

Jalen Redmond, an OU sophomore defensive tackle, was arrested on a complaint of driving under the influence early Wednesday morning. Redmond, 21, was stopped near Elm Avenue and Boyd Street in Norman, according to an affidavit obtained by The Transcript from the Norman Police Department. A police officer said they observed a vehicle make an improper wide right turn and drifted into the inside lane of Boyd Street just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Police said Redmond was sitting behind the steering wheel, admitted he had consumed alcoholic beverages and agreed to perform a Standardized Field Sobriety Test. Police said he was arrested due to his test, admission to drinking and physical signs of intoxication. - Norman Transcript
