OCT 4 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Colin Schooler, Texas Tech, LB, Sr.,...Schooler recorded 15 tackles and forced a key first-half fumble to help push Texas Tech to a strong defensive performance in its 23-20 victory at West Virginia. The senior LB finished one tackle shy of his career-high, which came during his time at Arizona. It marked his most tackles as a Red Raider and the 16th time in his career to reach double digits. On West Virginia's second drive of the afternoon, Schooler got to qua rterback Jarret Doege, forcing the strip sack. Devin Drew recovered the fumble at the West Virginia 34-yard line, setting up Texas Tech's second touchdown drive of the game. The sack pushed Schooler, the nation's active leader in career tackles and tackl es for loss, to 54.0 TFLs for his career, two shy of entering the top 25 all-time in NCAA FBS history. - Big 12 football

Texas Tech's Colin Schooler was named Monday to the watch list for the Dick Butkus Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top linebacker. This is the second preseason watch list already this summer for Schooler, a senior linebacker who was pr eviously recognized as a candidate for the Bednarik Award (nation's top defensive player) last week. Schooler was one of 51 linebackers tabbed to the watch list, which include seven players from the Big 12 Conference.Schooler, one of the most expe rienced players, yet alone linebackers, in college football entering the 2021 campaign, is a four-time All-Conference honoree after garnering honorable mention accolades three times at Arizona and then again in 2020 following his debut season with the Re d Raiders. His return for a final season makes the California product the active FBS leader with 375 career tackles and 51.0 career tackles for a loss. Linebacker Colin Schooler, the graduate transfer from Arizona, and defensive end Tyree Wilson. the transfer from Texas A&M, both got into their first games for the Red Raiders. Schooler assisted on a tackle on his first play. On the next play, Wilson dro ve right tackle Christian Jones nearly back into quarterback Sam Ehlinger, though Ehlinger completed the pass. Colin Schooler's much-anticipated debut with Texas Tech didn't happen Saturday night, and DaMarcus Fields didn't add to his 32 career starts. The transfer linebacker from Arizona and the three-year starting cornerback were among more than a dozen Red Rai ders who didn't suit up for the season opener against Houston Baptist. Tech issued a policy on Friday saying it would not answer questions about players who were deemed "unavailable" for games this season. However, Tech coach Matt Wells said Monday that, of 12 active COVID-19 cases among players that the athletic department announced on Sept. 2, only three had returned to action. As a Pac-12 linebacker for the past three years, Colin Schooler got used to making all sorts of split-second decisions: calls, checks, angles to take on opposing skill-position players. Perhaps no single one of those carried the gravity of the quick deci sion he had to make over the past month. When the Pac-12 postponed fall sports on Aug. 11 as a precaution for COVID-19, the former Arizona star decided not to sit tight. But then he had to choose a new home. He had his name in the NCAA transfer portal by Aug. 21 and announced on Aug. 30 he was joining Texas Tech as a graduate transfer. "The really tough part about it is Arizona did nothing wrong," Schooler said Tuesday. "It was a conference choice for them to not play, and I have no bad blood over there . I still wish everybody the best at Arizona. "But personally I couldn't sit back and watch the rest of the teams that decided to not opt out of the season play. I feel like when it's fall time, it's football time and that's what my family and I chose to do."Few, if any, transfers into the Texas Tech program have been more heralded. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior achieved some level of all-Pac-12 recognition each of his first three years after posting single-season tackle totals of 95, 119 and 98 - and tackles for loss totals of 13 1/2, 21 1/2 and 11. He's impressed his new coaches and teammates by being a quick study. "At Arizona, we ran kind of the same scheme," Schooler said. "But in terms of football, defense is defense no matter where you a re. It's just a matter of getting down the terminology and calls and certain checks like that. The Arizona pipeline to the Big 12 expanded further Sunday, when former Wildcats linebacker Colin Schooler announced his commitment to Texas Tech. Schooler became the fourth UA player to transfer to a Big 12 school this year. He joined his brother, Brend en Schooler (Texas); fellow linebacker Tony Fields II (West Virginia); and safety Scottie Young Jr. (West Virginia). The Schooler brothers entered the NCAA transfer portal after the Pac-12 announced it was postponing the fall football season because of t he coronavirus pandemic. The Big 12 is pushing forward with plans to play. Texas Tech is slated to open its season Sept. 12 against Houston Baptist. In the original, pre-pandemic schedule, the Red Raiders were slated to host the Wildcats on Sept. 19. Ari zona defeated Texas Tech 28-14 in Tucson last year. Colin Schooler appeared in 37 consecutive games for the UA over the past three seasons, including 33 straight starts. Former Arizona linebacker Colin Schooler will be eligible to play immediately this fall at Texas Tech after leaving the Pac-12 team for which he started the past three seasons. The Pac-12 has opted against playing football this fall because of the corona virus pandemic. The Big 12 plans to play a reduced 10-game schedule that starts Sept. 12. Coach Matt Wells said Sunday that Schooler, a graduate transfer, joined the Red Raiders last week. Schooler had 318 tackles in 37 games at Arizona, and goes into hi s final season with 46 tackles for loss, the most among any active FBS player. Brenden Schooler transferred to Arizona to play with his younger brother, Colin. They lost the opportunity to team up this fall when the Pac-12 postponed sports until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. They've decided to pursue other options. The Schooler brothers announced Wednesday that they're entering their names into the NCAA transfer portal. Both are graduate transfers who'd be eligible to play immediately. Both said they hoped to land at schools that are still planning to play this fall.While the Pac-12 and Big Ten have decided to nix fall sports, the ACC, Big 12 and SEC are moving forward with modified football seasons for the time being. Colin Schooler started most of the past three seasons at "Mike" linebacker, compiling 312 tac kles, including 46 for losses, plus 11 passes defensed and four interceptions. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, when he had 95 tackles and 13.5 TFLs, and upped those totals to 119 and 21.5, respectively, as a sophomo re in 2018. - Arizona Star News

With COVID-19 cases surging in the state and Gov. Doug Ducey ordering a shutdown, the University of Arizona has put its athletics reentry plan on pause. On June 15, UA had begun bringing football players back in waves to participate in voluntary on-campu s workouts. Eighty-three student-athletes had returned to campus, and only one had tested positive for COVID-19, according to the university. But with cases still on the rise in Pima County and elsewhere, and the healthcare system becoming increasingly b urdened, UA has halted workouts for the time being."Out of an abundance of caution, we have made this decision with campus and community partners to pause our reentry process," UA Athletic Director Dave Heeke said in a statement. "The health, safe ty and well-being of all members of our community is our No. 1 priority. The Arizona Wildcats are following the lead of the Pac-12 Conference by bringing student-athletes back to campus in mid-June. The UA "will begin the process of having student-athletes return to campus for volunteer physical training" on June 15, the scho ol announced Friday morning. That date coincides with the league's recommendation issued earlier this week. Campuses have been closed to students since mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic.The first group will consist of football players. Student-athletes from other sports, along with select staff members, will return "in phases on a weekly basis" thereafter, the school said in a news release. Priority will go to those who compete in fall sports. The release also noted that "all student- athletes and staff members on campus will follow significantly elevated safety protocols for testing, tracing and treatment." "The phased re-entry of student-athletes is the next step in Arizona Athletics' commitment to a safe and healthy return to campu s," UA athletic director Dave Heeke said, via the school. One day after UA president Robert C. Robbins expressed concern about the viability of college football this fall, Wildcats athletic director Dave Heeke clarified his department's stance on the season, which is in doubt because of the coronavirus pandemic . Heeke has been working with other athletic directors in the Pac-12, which is working with other conferences across the country, "to bring consistency to a restart of football," Heeke said in a phone interview Thursday afternoon."We certainly con tinue to explore all options regarding football for next year," Heeke said. "Everything's on the table as far as how we would restart it. "It's important for us to restart football, and we want to do that in the appropriate manner. We want to follow the science and be able to assure a safe and good environment for our student-athletes, for our staff and coaches, as well as for fans.
