Four new members joined the 200-yard rushing club, increasing the total to 25 players who have accounted for 30 such games this season. North Carolina's Ty Chander ran 22 times for 213 yards against Wake Forest, Oregon's Travis Dye had 28 carries for 211 yards against Washington, UAB's DeWayne McBride picked up 210 yards on 14 attempts, and Arizona State's Rachaad White ran 28 times for 202 yards against Washington. - AP College Football

  11/06/21 - RB Ty ChandlerrSr/2022, North Carolina, 5-11, 203 (DS#15 RB) + More +

Ty Chandler ran for career highs of 213 yards and four touchdowns to help North Carolina rally from 18 down in the third quarter to stun 10th-ranked Wake Forest 58-55, handing the Demon Deacons their first loss in a nonconference matchup of instate Atlantic Coast Conference teams. Chandler's big day included a 50-yard breakaway run with 1:12 left. That was the final blow for the Tar Heels (5-4) as they rallied from a huge third-quarter deficit to beat the Demon Deacons (8-1, No. 9 CFP) for the second straight year, following a 21-point comeback last year by erasing a 45-27 deficit with 7:38 left in the third. The loss doesn't impact the Demon Deacons' pursuit of their first ACC title since 2006 since it was part of a home-and-home nonconference series announced in 2015 with the schools not playing each other as often amid the expanded ACC's scheduling model. But it likely ends their hopes of climbing deeper into the College Football Playoff race, even if they win out in league play and win the ACC championship game.

Sam Hartman threw for 398 yards and five touchdowns while running for 78 yards and two more scores for Wake Forest. A.T. Perry and Jaquarii Roberson each hauled in a pair of touchdown grabs to lead a 615-yard effort from the offense. But that high-scoring unit, one of the best of the Bowl Subdivision, stalled at a critical time with three straight empty drives against a much-maligned defense that had struggled to show many tangible signs of improvement this season. Sam Howell threw for 216 yards and a touchdown while running for 104 and two more scores in a matchup of high-profile quarterbacks. He helped the Tar Heels post 546 yards and set up a tiebreaking 25-yard field goal by Grayson Atkins with 2:12 left. - North Carolina/AP College Football

In addition to touchdown runs of 5 and 7 yards versus the Cavaliers, helped set the tone for the second half with a 60-yard run on the second play from scrimmage. - Atlantic Coast Conference Football

If North Carolina receiver Emery Simmons' observation of running back Ty Chandler is correct, the Tar Heels' will be in for a special season offensively. Chandler is the graduate transfer from Tennessee that UNC coach Mack Brown brought in specifically to make up for the lack of veteran talent in the backfield. Michael Carter and Javonte Williams posted 1,000-yard rushing seasons a year ago on their way to the NFL. Simmons labeled Chandler, "very quiet" and "soft-spoken." But it's the comparison that raised eyebrows. "He kind of reminds me of Javonte," Simmons said. "He's just quiet. He keeps his head down. He works. And that's it."

Williams transformed himself from strictly a short-yardage back into a prolific runner who gained 1,140 yards last season and led the Heels with 22 touchdowns, 19 of which came on the ground. If Chandler can have anywhere close to the kind of production that helped Williams get picked 35th overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos, the Heels should have a good shot at reaching all of the goals they've set this season. - Raleigh News Observer

  04/26/21 - RB Ty ChandlerrSr/2022, North Carolina, 5-11, 203 (DS#15 RB) + More +

The Tar Heels lost two 1,000-yard running backs in Michael Carter and Javonte Williams, who will both be hearing their names called in this week's NFL draft. They also lost their top two ball catchers in 1,000-yard receiver Dyami Brown and Dazz Newsome, who led the team in receptions in 2019. The Heels were so young at running back that coach Mack Brown sought a graduate transfer in Ty Chandler, from Tennessee. Brown's philosophy with transfers is to only take a starter, so Chandler will have the first crack at solidifying the starting spot. But as the Heels showed with Carter and Williams, there are plenty of carries to go around. The battle to be in the rotation will be competitive and likely carry into fall camp. - Raleigh News Observer

  10/10/20 - RB Ty ChandlerrSr/2022, North Carolina, 5-11, 203 (DS#15 RB) + More +

Tennessee senior running back Ty Chandler is leading the Southeastern Conference in rushing through two weekends despite failing to notch a 100-yard performance in victories over South Carolina and Missouri. Of course, negative plays can factor into such totals as well. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder out of Nashville's Montgomery Bell Academy has carried 32 times for 176 yards for a robust average of 5.5 yards per rush. Not once in those 32 carries has Chandler endured a lost-yardage stop, a trait he hopes to continue this Saturday when the No. 14 Volunteers face No. 3 Georgia in Sanford Stadium. "We definitely take pride in that - being able to get back to the line of scrimmage and getting more yards than what the play is blocked for," Chandler said Tuesday afternoon on a Zoom call. "That's what is preached to us every day, and that's what we try and do.

Tennessee's running backs didn't have a lost-yardage carry in last weekend's 35-12 thumping of Mizzou, as Chandler, sophomore Eric Gray and freshman Jabari Small combined on 39 rushes for 222 yards. Vols third-year coach Jeremy Pruitt said after the game that negative runs typically are the result of missed assignments and that running backs should always fall forward. Pruitt felt like his rushers could have broken more arm tackles but was pleased they didn't get greedy. "Sometimes a running back can get greedy and bounce things that he shouldn't or maybe make the wrong cut," Pruitt said. "Our guys are coachable, and they're trying to do the things we ask them to do." - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Former Tennessee running back Jay Graham is returning to his alma mater to work a second stint as the Volunteers' running backs coach. Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt announced the hire Thursday and said in a statement that Graham "is one of the best assistant coaches in the country." Graham agreed to a two-year deal that will pay him $575,000 each year. Graham spent the past two seasons coaching Texas A&M's running backs. He replaces David Johnson, who left Tennessee to become the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator on new Florida State coach Mike Norvell's staff. Graham gained 2,609 career yards rushing at Tennessee from 1993-96. He worked as a graduate assistant at Tennessee in 2005 and was the Vols' running backs coach in 2012. He left Tennessee in 2013 to join a Florida State staff that included Pruitt as defensive coordinator. The Seminoles won the national title that season. - AP College Football

2019 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Ty Chandler (Jr.), Tennessee,...Chandler has proven to be one of the SEC's most explosive and versatile running backs over his two seasons on Rocky Top. The Nashville, Tenn., native led the Vols with 630 rushing yards on 115 carries (5.5 ypc) in 2018, while hauling in 19 receptions for 183 yards. He led UT with seven total touchdowns with four coming on the ground and three scoring grabs.

He became the first Vol since 2006 with two runs of 75 yards or more. Chandler also permanently etched his name in the Tennessee record books as the first Vol running back to record a touchdown reception in three consecutive games. He ran for a career-high 158 yards against UTEP early in the season and closed out the fall with 80 or more yards rushing in the final three games. Chandler rushed for 305 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman in 2018 and also ranked fourth in the SEC with a 26.1 kickoff return average. - Tennessee Football
