  08/14/22 - QB Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

Welcome back, Tyrrell Pigrome. Almost three years removed from his last season as the quarterback for the Maryland football team, Pigrome has returned to the state - this time trying his hand at Towson. Is it strange to be back in the area where it all started? Pigrome doesn't think so. "I don't look at it that way," the Birmingham, Alabama, native said. "I just look at it as a new opportunity. A new opportunity means new blessings. I'm just getting to do what I do and pursue new opportunities in my life. So it doesn't feel weird at all." The Tigers have six quarterbacks on their roster, but Pigrome, 24, and UAB graduate student transfer Tyler Johnson III, who helped the Blazers capture a pair of Conference USA titles in 2018 and 2020, appear to be the leading candidates to start in the season opener at Bucknell on Sept. 3.

Coach Rob Ambrose said he can't bring himself to call Pigrome "Piggy" or "Swine" or any of the other hog-related nicknames his teammates have conjured up, but Ambrose said the Mississippi transfer has raised the level of competition among the quarterbacks. "He's clearly talented," he said. "It's not like I haven't seen him before. But the cool part about him is, just like everybody else, he sees that it's his job to meld himself to the program and the people in it, and he's doing a really good job. He's picking up the language pretty quick, and he's one of those six guys where it's the Quarterback of the Day to where I could say, 'If that guy started, we'd beat everybody." - Baltimore Sun

Days before the start of the 2021 season, No. 25 Ole Miss football has added another quarterback. Former Maryland and Western Kentucky quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome has joined the Rebels. Pigrome, who started seven games and played in 34 at Maryland, was added to the Rebels' roster Tuesday. Pigrome joins junior Matt Corral, sophomore Kinkead Dent and freshman Luke Altmyer in the Rebels' quarterback room. Pigrome is a senior who does not have any remaining eligibility after 2021. At Maryland, Pigrome threw for 1,455 yards and seven touchdowns and ran for 376 yards and four touchdowns across three seasons. In 2020 at Western Kentucky, Pigrome threw for 1,603 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for 337 yards and four touchdowns. - The Clarion Ledger

  04/04/21 - QB Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

Western Kentucky's quarterback competition has lost some of its competition. Tyrrell Pigrome, the Hilltoppers' starting quarterback last fall, has entered the transfer portal, the program confirmed to the Daily News on Wednesday. Chris Hummer of 247Sports was the first to report Pigrome's entrance in the portal. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound graduate transfer from Maryland started 10 games last year and appeared in 11. He completed 171 of 297 passes for 1,603 yards and nine touchdowns with two interceptions - both of which came in a loss to Georgia State in the LendingTree Bowl. The dual-threat quarterback was WKU's second-leading rusher with 337 yards and four touchdowns on 105 attempts. Pigrome came from Maryland last spring, where he had 2,407 yards of offense in 34 games, including seven starts. - BG Daily News

Western Kentucky scored the first 17 points of the game in some unconventional ways. Special teams player A.J. Brathwaite Jr. recovered a botched punt attempt in the end zone and offensive lineman Jordan Meredith gathered a loose ball in the end zone after a fumble by teammate Gaej Walker. Narveson connected on field goals from 33, 46 and 49 yards - boosting his season total to 13-of-14 makes. Walker added 98 yards on the ground for Western Kentucky (5-6, 4-3 Conference USA). Pigrome was 18-of-27 passing and he carried it eight times. Chris Reynolds passed for 205 yards with two touchdowns for Charlotte (2-4, 2-2). Two of Micaleous Elder's four catches were for touchdowns. The game was initially scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28 and bumped to Tuesday, Dec. 1 but was unable to be played. It was WKU's second Sunday game in program history - with the first against Arkansas State in the 1952 Refrigerator Bowl. - AP College Football

  11/21/20 - QB Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

Tyrrell Pigrome ran for two touchdowns and the defense scored two more on back-to-back takeaways as Western Kentucky scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half to defeat Florida International 38-21 on Saturday. FIU (0-5, 0-3 Conference USA) was first on the board when JJ Holloman pulled in a 28-yard pass from Max Bortenschlager midway through the opening quarter, and the Panthers led 13-10 at halftime.

The Hilltoppers (4-6, 3-3) rallied for 35 unanswered points beginning in the first half. But defense turned the tide in the third quarter when Bortenschlager was hit and fumbled. Roger Cray picked up the ball on the bounce and ran it 19 yards to the end zone to put Western Kentucky ahead 17-13. On FIU's next play, Eli Brown picked off Bortgenschlager for a 22-yard interception return and touchdown. Gaej Walker and Pigrome scored short rushing touchdowns in the final quarter as WKU extended its scoring run. Walker finished with 127 yards on 17 carries. Pigrome passed for 121 yards. Western Kentucky hasn't lost a home finale since 2010. The Hilltoppers end their season at Charlotte next Saturday. - AP College Football

Backup quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Craig Burt Jr. with 1:21 to play and Western Kentucky beat FCS-member Chattanooga 13-10 on Saturday. Brayden Narveson kicked a pair of 32-yard field goals for Western Kentucky (2-4). Pigrome came on for starter Kevaris Thomas late in the fourth quarter and finished 4-of-8 passing for 73 yards. Thomas completed 12 of 17 for 59 yards. He lost a fumble that was recovered by UTC's Ty Boeck at the Mocs' 20 with 23 seconds left in the first half and Western Kentucky trailing 7-3. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, moved to Thursday, Sept. 3, then eventually delayed until Oct. 24 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chattanooga played for the first time in 336 days, its longest layoff from action since missing the 1943 and 1944 seasons due to World War II. This is the lone game of the fall for the Mocs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UTC will compete for the Southern Conference Championship with an eight-game schedule in the spring of 2021. - Western Kentucky/AP College Football

OCT 5 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU graduate QB Tyrrell Pigrome, a graduate transfer from Maryland, continued his efficient play at the quarterback position in the Hilltoppers' 20-17 win at longtime rival Middle Tennessee. The Birmingham, Alabama, native completed 21-of-36 attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 55 rushing yards. Pigrome's 21 completions tied a collegiate career-high, while he did not turn the ball over for the third-straight game in a WKU uniform. He is now one of just three quarterbacks in the nation to have at least six passing touchdowns and no interceptions this season, along with Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Miami's D'Eriq King. - Conference USA Football

  09/05/20 - QB Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

Western Kentucky has announced its starting quarterback. After watching two weeks of practice and reviewing film from Saturday's first fall scrimmage, Tyrrell "Piggy T" Pigrome was named the Hilltoppers' starting quarterback leading into the Sept. 12 season opener at Louisville. "I think he's done a really good job of handling the offense. You've heard me say and (offensive coordinator Bryan) Ellis say a lot that part of playing the position is just managing the position, mastering the play, making sure everybody is in the right position," WKU head coach Tyson Helton said Wednesday in a Zoom conference. "You can tell he's an older guy - he does that. He seems to handle it pretty well. At the same time, he's still learning the offense. He'll have to progress as we go through the season, but he's doing a nice job of that."

Pigrome was the assumed frontrunner for the position because of his experience entering fall camp as a graduate transfer from Maryland. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound QB earned seven starts over his career for the Terrapins. Pigrome, the 2015 Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year, accumulated 2,407 total yards of offense in 34 games, and was recruited by now-WKU offensive coordinator Bryan Ellis out of Clay-Chalkville High School. Pigrome credited aggressive recruiting once he entered the transfer portal in February as a big reason he came to Bowling Green. "I think the maturity level's there, I think he's handled things - being the new guy, coming in, have to win the position - I felt like he's handled that pretty good with maturity, so we just felt like, right now, he's kind of the clear-cut starter," Helton said. "As you know, as we progress through the season, you never know what's going to happen, so we'll see. I'm just happy for him. I think he's done a nice job and looking forward to seeing him play in Louisville." - BG Daily News

  05/20/20 - QB Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

A first look at the tape suggests Tyrrell Pigrome as a running quarterback at Maryland. Sure, his legs are capable of bailing out a broken play, but it's the last thing he wants to do. Pigrome wants to prove himself as a pocket quarterback in his final season of college football. As the newest addition to Western Kentucky's roster as a graduate transfer, Pigrome will have that opportunity if he wins the open quarterback battle. "They run an offense around what they have to do and what I like to do," Pigrome told the Daily News in a phone interview Wednesday. "Just make me the best me. I can run and throw. People don't know that I want to sit in the pocket. I'm just going to show what I can do." WKU announced the addition of Pigrome over the weekend, bringing much-needed experience to a quarterback room that lacks it.

The Hilltoppers are down two quarterbacks from the 2019 roster with the graduation of Ty Storey, who was also a grad transfer, and Steven Duncan, who transferred to Tarleton State. Both were the only quarterbacks to play last fall, which leaves the future of the offense in the hands of the unproven. Pigrome completed 58 percent of his passes last season for the Terrapins against Big Ten defenses. WKU's offense last season under head coach Tyson Helton and offensive coordinator Bryan Ellis allowed Storey to lead Conference USA with a 70 percent completion rate with easy routes and a veteran offensive line. "I'm comfortable," Pigrome said. "We'll be able to show that as the season starts, I'll be able to do whatever they need me to do. That's the best situation I could be in. I have better opportunities." - BG Daily News

  05/16/20 - QB Tyrrell PigromerSr/2023, Towson, 5-09, 204 (DS#68 QB) + More +

Western Kentucky has a new quarterback. Former Maryland quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome is joining the Hilltoppers as a graduate transfer after starting seven games for the Terrapins over four years. A source has confirmed to the Daily News that Pigrome has signed documents to make the transfer official. Pigrome joins a quarterback room with redshirt junior Davis Shanley, redshirt sophomore Kevaris Thomas and incoming freshmen signees Grady Robison and Darius Ocean.

The Hilltoppers' starting quarterback position will be up for grabs until the last week of fall camp leading up to the home opener against UT-Chattanooga on Sept. 5, but Pigrome's resume and immediate eligibility makes him the assumed favorite. The 5-10, 209-pound quarterback nicknamed "Piggy" is the first Maryland quarterback to start a game in four different seasons since Vic Turyn in 1945-48. He entered the transfer portal on Feb. 6 and chose the Hilltoppers over Tulane and Temple. He started three games last year for Maryland, throwing for 719 yards on a 58.5 percent completion rate with three touchdowns while rushing for 153 yards and another two scores. - BG Daily News
