After switching schools for a third time by coming to Louisville, defensive back Nicario Harper has entered the transfer portal, he announced Thursday. Harper was brought to the Cardinals' team in March to be a hybrid player, seeing time at the linebacker, safety and nickelback positions. He played in five games and totaled seven tackles, four of which came in a 35-31 loss to Florida State on Sept. 16. "A lot of people just think I'm just a physical guy, but I want to show also I can cover," he said in August. "I can move around. I can blitz. I can play up top. I can play in a box. I can do everything. That's the kind of player I feel like I am, so I want to I'm glad I got the opportunity to show that this season." Harper transferred from Jacksonville State where he recorded 54 tackles and two interceptions over two seasons. He was an Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year honoree, AP All-American first team choice and a Buck Buchannon Award Finalist. The Georgia native started his college career at the University of Southern Mississippi and appeared in nine games as a true freshman in 2018. - Courier Journal

Nicario Harper wasn't happy with the feedback he'd received. After two seasons at Jacksonville State, Harper was ready to take the next step and to enter the 2022 NFL draft. The only problem? Scouts weren't sold on him. He was told they wanted to see him in coverage more and to work on his hips. Harper, who had a stint at Southern Miss before Jacksonville State, was open to what he'd been told even if he wasn't thrilled to hear it. "They just really see me as a physical player, as a downhill thumper," the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year said, "and I want to be able to show my versatility more." Instead of staying at Jacksonville State, he moved back up to the FBS level and transferred to Louisville, where he's been given the chance to show off his versatility. During fall camp, the Cardinals repped Harper at multiple spots, including the CARD linebacker, free safety and nickelback positions.

Harper is one of six transfers, out of 13 total that joined the roster during the offseason, that coach Scott Satterfield's staff brought in to reinforce a secondary that gave up the fourth-most passing yards in the ACC (3,193 yards) and 20 touchdowns (10th). The bulk of Harper's experience as a Gamecock was at safety where he tallied 54 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in addition to being a Buck Buchanon Award finalist, given to the top safety in FCS, in his final season. That's not all he has to offer, though, and the Georgia native welcomes the opportunity to display more of his capabilities this season. "A lot of people just think I'm just a physical guy, but I want to show also I can cover," he said. "I can move around. I can blitz. I can play up top. I can play in a box. I can do everything. That's the kind of player I feel like I am, so I want to I'm glad I got the opportunity to show that this season." - Courier Journal

2021 ALL-ASUN CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB - Nicario Harper, Jacksonville State, So., Atlanta, Ga.,...Harper was another player that missed time due to injury but still produced enough to earn his second-straight all-conference nod. The Atlanta native was a consensus First-Team All-American in the spring, when he was named the top defensive back in the FCS. He missed two games in the fall season and was limited in others, but still finished third on the team with 54 tackles, while adding 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. His two defensive scores tied Swain for the team lead and ranked him among the FCS leaders. - Jacksonville State Football

MARCH 2 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nicario Harper, SAF, 6-1, 180, R-So., Atlanta, Ga., Jacksonville State,...Harper led a stellar JSU defensive effort against No. 23 Tennessee Tech, recording a game-high 13 tackles and also intercepting a pass in the 27-10 win. His interception came with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter at the JSU three-yard line to stop a TTU scoring threat and keep the JSU lead at two possession. The play also set up the Gamecocks' final scoring drive. Harper was the leading tackler on a defense that held TTU to just 227 total yards and only 75 yards on the ground and also forced five turnovers.
