DeMario McCall, Ohio State, Player News

  08/15/21 - CB DeMario McCallrSr/2022, Ohio State, 5-09, 179 (DS#74 CB) + More +

Demario McCall was tempted to leave. Honestly, who would have blamed him? For five years, he bounced from running back to receiver at Ohio State without finding a true niche. Last year, he caught one pass and had one carry. His primary role was kickoff returner. Most of the time, that meant calling for a fair catch. "It was very frustrating," McCall said. "Very frustrating." When the NCAA granted players an extra year of eligibility because of COVID-19, McCall seemed an unlikely candidate to return. He had, after all, graduated this spring. Yet here McCall is, back for a final year. "To be honest, nobody wants to be here for six years," he said Friday. "But we've all got different routes. God has a plan for all of us. So this is the plan. He's driving and I'm with Him." The latest route is a detour. McCall has switched positions to cornerback. "It was actually my idea," he said. "For my last go-round, I wanted to try something different and go for it and give it my all." - Columbus Dispatch

Back for a sixth season with Ohio State football, Demario McCall may be in line for a third position. McCall was working out with the cornerbacks when reporters watched a couple of periods of the Buckeyes' Friday practice. Ryan Day said the former running back and slot receiver has been practicing at nickel back - a move prompted by McCall's suggestion. "The guys on defense saw him do a few drills and he kind of caught their eye right off the bat," Day said. "So he's been building and learning. It takes time to change positions like that. And I know he's kind of done some different things for us on offense, but this is a huge opportunity for him." McCall began his college career as a running back and ran for 270 yards and three touchdowns as a true freshman. Yet he totaled only 283 rushing yards in the following three seasons - including a redshirt year - then moved to the receiver room last season. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  10/01/20 - CB DeMario McCallrSr/2022, Ohio State, 5-09, 179 (DS#74 CB) + More +

Demario McCall came to the Ohio State football team as the No. 44 player and No. 2 all-purpose back in the 2016 recruiting class. Five years later and he's entering his final season in Columbus, having spent his career going back and forth between the running back and wide receiver rooms. He's settled back in the latter for the 2020 season, but he's still not entirely sure of his role. That isn't an ideal scenario for someone who was once a top 50 recruit. "(It's) very frustrating," McCall said. As a runner, McCall has compiled 553 yards and six touchdowns. As a receiver, he's caught 19 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns. Most of those stats have come against second units in games already decided. His only consistent job has been as a return specialist. "I can be anywhere," McCall said. "Out the backfield, at receiver, special teams. (I can be) a role player."

McCall's experience as both a back and receiver gives him a unique skill set. But he hasn't been able to break through in a meaningful way. He knows what he's capable of doing with the ball in his hands. He just needs a chance to do so. "First things first, I'm going to do what I have to do to make the team better and get the team wins," McCall said. "For me personally, I just want to go out (on) top. Our goal is to win a Big Ten Championship first, then compete for a National (Championship). Other than that, I just want to play my role." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
