Pitt senior wide receiver/returner D.J. Turner has been invited to participate in the 2021 College Gridiron Showcase & Symposium Jan. 17-21, in Fort Worth, Texas. Turner, who joined the team in September after transferring from Maryland, is Pitt's second-leading pass catcher, with 39 receptions for 552 yards (14.2 per catch) and two touchdowns. He caught 15 passes - one short of a Pitt record - for 184 yards in the victory against Virginia Tech. He also is Pitt's chief returner, averaging 8.4 yards on punts and 21.9 on kickoffs. Pitt has one game remaining: Dec. 10 at Georgia Tech. Participants in Fort Worth will be evaluated in individual, noncontact drills. They also will attend meetings and, possibly, sit down with NFL scouts and executives. The 2020 College Gridiron Showcase attracted 150 scouts from 31 of the 32 NFL teams and all nine CFL teams. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Pittsburgh's DJ Turner and Purdue's Rondale Moore each had 15 catches, tied for second-most in a game behind Tyler Snead's 16 receptions for East Carolina against Tulsa on Oct. 30. Turner, a senior who transferred from Maryland, finished with 184 yards and a touchdown against Virginia Tech while falling one catch short of the Pitt record set by Harry Orszulak in 1968. In case you were wondering, Larry Fitzgerald, the greatest Pitt receiver of all time, never had more than 12 in a game. Turner's previous high was eight catches for 186 yards against North Carolina State on Oct. 3. - AP College Football

As late as midway through training camp, D.J. Turner was just a name on somebody else's roster. If he had walked through the doors of Pitt's practice facility almost any day in August, he might have been asked to leave. Yet, here he is, shouldering much of the responsibility to make Pitt's offense go. Where would the Panthers have been without Turner's eight catches for 186 yards in the loss to N.C. State last Saturday? Definitely not within two points of winning. After four games, Turner leads the ACC and is eighth in the nation with 319 yards in receptions. Yes, Pitt has played four games - one or two more than 13 of the 14 other teams in the conference - but that doesn't diminish his productivity or offensive coordinator Mark Whipple's trust in his 5-foot-9 wide receiver.

He is here largely because the Big Ten postponed the start of its season, and Turner wanted a guaranteed place to play. Also, a big tip of the cap to Turner's brother, Mark Hayes, who played for Pat Narduzzi a quarter-century ago when Pitt's coach was an assistant at Rhode Island. Turner was set to play for Maryland this season. "I definitely planned on having a big season," he said. "But it goes to show that I'm here for a reason." - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Wide receiver DJ Turner, who announced Aug. 21 that he was transferring from Maryland after the Big Ten Conference decided to postpone fall sports because of the coronavirus pandemic, has enrolled at Pittsburgh. Turner, a graduate transfer, will be immediately eligible, Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi announced in a news release Tuesday. The Atlantic Coast Conference will play an 11-game schedule this season, with independent Notre Dame joining to play a conference schedule and becoming eligible for the ACC title game. Pittsburgh's first game is Sept. 12 against Football Championship Subdivision program Austin Peay and will be played without fans at Heinz Field. "DJ had a prior relationship with [wide receivers coach] Chris Beatty from Maryland, so it's an easier transition for him individually," Narduzzi said. "From what I saw today, he can help us right away. He's really smart." Turner, a former three-star recruit from DeMatha Catholic in Washington, had 24 catches for 294 yards and one touchdown in 30 games for the Terps. He was an effective returner in limited action, returning three punts for 107 yards as a senior, including a 40-yard return for a touchdown against Howard in the 2019 season opener. - Baltimore Sun

Maryland wide receiver DJ Turner has entered the transfer portal, he announced Friday, citing the Big Ten's decision to postpone the football season. He's the first known Terp football player to announce his intention to transfer since the conference pushed back the start of the season because of medical concerns surrounding COVID-19. "After the decision was made by the BIG 10 to postpone the season, my family and I weighed the options to determine what the best course of action would be to put myself in the best situation during these tough times," Turner wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. "After careful consideration I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal." Turner, a fifth-year senior, redshirted last year after playing in just the first three games of the season. - Baltimore Sun
