  03/22/20 - Tre NixonrSr/2021, Central Florida, 6-0, 187 (DS#59 WR) + More +

UCF has closed the book on Gabriel Davis' stellar career and the Knights are already working to identify their next great wide receiver. It's a story receivers coach Darrell Wyatt said hasn't been written yet. When Wyatt was asked who would replace Davis, who declared early for the NFL after setting the single-season school record with 1,241 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season, he responded, "I was asked this question two years ago. That's still a work in progress. Who's going to be the guy? I think you earn that in practice. You earn that in the scrimmages. "We've got some talented guys. We've got a few guys that have come back and made some plays, but past results do not guarantee future results. Every day, they come out and grind and the guy that emerges will be the go-to guy."

Before UCF suspended spring football workouts due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Knights' receivers were battling to show Wyatt they could replace Davis. Tre Nixon entered the offseason as a strong candidate for the job. Nixon was second on the team behind Davis in receiving yards (830) and receiving touchdowns (7) last season while third in catches (49) behind Davis and Marlon Williams. He also was targeted 94 times, second-most behind Davis (133). "Tre's done a great job for us for two years," Wyatt said. "He's had some big plays for us. He's been able to get deep and give us some big plays, but he wants to improve his overall game. He's been in what we call the lab, working on his craft." Nixon, who transferred from Ole Miss in 2017, points to several areas of his game he's hoping to bolster this spring. - Orlando Sentinel

  03/10/20 - Richie GrantrSr/2021, Central Florida, 6-0, 197 (DS#3 FS) + More +

UCF athletic director Danny White has signed a five-year contract that will pay him more than $1 million annually. White's base salary will start at $1.081 million and increase by 5% every year on the rollover date. The deal includes a $2.5 million buyout, which White or his new employer would owe UCF if he leaves the school before May 11, 2021 to become an athletic director at another school, an executive with a professional team, college conference or the NCAA, or an executive with a sports marketing, sports management company, broadcasting or social media company.

One of Duke AD Kevin White's five children, Danny White has helped UCF reach new heights since taking over in 2015. The football program has been one of the nation's best over the last three years, including going undefeated in 2017 and prompting White to declare the Knights national champions. The men's basketball team made the NCAA Tournament last year and barely lost to Duke in the second round. He also helped raise $31.7 million in financial commitments in 2019, nearly double the previous year and nearly four times what UCF raised just three years earlier. - AP College Football

2019 AFCA FCS COACHES' SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: LB Bryson Armstrong, Jr., Kennesaw St.,...The Marietta, Ga., native guided the No. 4 defense in the country with 95 tackles. He earned the 2019 Big South Defensive Player of the Year award after adding 12.0 tackles-for-loss, 3.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception to his tab. The 2017 Jerry Rice Award winner made a massive impact in the Owls' two postseason games this season, turning in double-digit tackles in each contest. Against Wofford, he forced a fumble in the fourth quarter that turned the momentum in the Owls' favor that eventually propelled Kennesaw State into the second round of the FCS Playoffs.

In addition to the double-digit tackles games in each playoff game, Armstrong collected 13 tackles at Missouri State, 12 against Charleston Southern and 10 versus North Alabama. Against the Lions, the junior lived in the North Alabama backfield and collected 2.5 tackles-for-loss, his season high. His sole interception came against Campbell, where he returned the turnover for 11 yards en route to a 38-35 win. Armstrong is the first player in program history to twice be named to the list after collecting honors in 2017. - Kennesaw State Football

Former Maryland coach D.J. Durkin, who was fired during the 2018 season following the death of a player who had collapsed during offseason conditioning drills, was hired Thursday as an assistant by Mississippi. Durkin, who spent last season as a consultant with the Atlanta Falcons, will join new Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin's defensive staff. Durkin did stints as defensive coordinator at Michigan and Florida, building up a reputation as a top recruiter, before being hired as Maryland head coach at age 37. He went 10-15 in two seasons at Maryland, but his tenure ended abruptly amid scandal. On May 29, 2018, offensive lineman Jordan McNair collapsed during conditioning drills because of heat-related illness. McNair died on June 13. An independent investigation determined that athletic trainers on the scene did not follow proper procedures. Durkin was not found responsible for McNair's death, but he was fired in October after having been placed on administrative leave to start the season. - AP College Football
