  01/05/23 - Taylor UpshawrSr/2024, Arizona, 6-4, 246 (DS#25 DE) + More +

The post-playoff exodus continues at Michigan, where a second edge rusher has signaled plans to transfer today. Defensive end Taylor Upshaw entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal on Tuesday, a team spokesman confirmed to MLive on Tuesday. Upshaw, who appeared in 36 games over five seasons, is a graduate student with a year of eligibility remaining. Upshaw has not yet announced the move, but it's not totally unexpected given his backup role in 2022. He has two career starts (none this year) and never seemed to crack a starting spot in Michigan's revamped defense the past two seasons.

This year, with Michigan going 13-1 and winning its second straight Big Ten title, the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Upshaw tallied 12 tackles (4 1/2 for a loss), two sacks and an interception as a backup edge rusher. His highlight of the season came Nov. 26 against Ohio State, when he notched his first career interception in the win over the Buckeyes. Upshaw follows fellow edge rusher Julius Welschof, who entered the portal earlier Tuesday. He is the eighth Michigan player total to enter the portal since the end of the regular season, allowing him the opportunity to get a jump-start on finding a new place to play in 2023. - Ann Arbor News

  12/22/22 - Jordan MorganrSr/2024, Arizona, 6-5, 311 (DS#2 OG) + More +

Tackle Jordan Morgan, one of the top offensive linemen in the Pac-12, is expected to return to Arizona next season. Morgan seemed destined to enter the 2023 NFL draft amid a stellar '22 campaign before suffering a season-ending knee injury at UCLA on Nov. 12. Morgan elected to go the latter route. Assuming his injury was a torn ACL, he faces a lengthy rehab. But if he's able to recover in time for the season, he'll solidify Arizona's line as quarterback Jayden de Laura's blind-side protector. - Arizona Star News

  12/07/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Arizona's star wide receiver, who leads the Pac-12 in receptions (85) this season, announced on his social media accounts Monday night that he's returning to the Wildcats in 2023. Cowing announced his decision with a video hours after receiver counterpart Dorian Singer, who leads the conference in receiving yards, revealed that he's entering the transfer portal. "Ever since I was young, I dreamed about playing the game I love professionally," Cowing said in the video. "After careful consideration and talking with my family and loved ones, I have decided that one year is not enough. Wildcat nation, we still have business to take care of."

After three seasons at UTEP, Cowing transferred to Arizona this past season and quickly emerged as one of the Wildcats' top play-makers on offense alongside Singer and star freshman Tetairoa "T-Mac" McMillan, catching 85 passes for 1,034 yards and seven touchdowns; his 85 receptions also ranks third in single-season program history behind Bobby Wade and Dennis Northcutt. Cowing has 226 catches for 3,629 yards and 20 touchdowns over his four-year college career. Cowing, who is likely to become Arizona's first All-Pac-12 selection since Juron Criner in 2010, was named a first-team all-conference selection by Pro Football Focus last week. - Arizona Star News

  11/25/22 - Michael WileyrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 210 (DS#31 RB) + More +

Michael Wiley ran for 214 yards and three touchdowns, and Arizona beat Arizona State 38-35 on Friday to end a five-game losing streak in the Territorial Cup rivalry. The Wildcats (5-7, 3-6 Pac-12) twice led by 10 points and let Arizona State back in it both times in a wild game that featured 1,018 combined yards. Wiley was Arizona's workhorse, finishing with the second-most rushing yards in Territorial Cup history behind Trung Candidate's 288 for Arizona in 1998. Trenton Bourguet threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns for Arizona State (3-9, 2-7) in Shaun Aguano's final game as interim coach. The Sun Devils got the ball back at their own 28-yard line with 1:33 after stopping Arizona on a fourth-and-1, but Bourguet threw his second interception after being hit.

The Sun Devils rallied from some early miscues to lead 14-10 at halftime. Once the second half started, neither team could stop the other, combining for five touchdowns and 429 yards in the third quarter alone. Giovanni Sanders caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Bourguet to put Arizona State up 21-17. Wiley scored on runs of 12 and 72 yards to make it 31-21 Arizona. Xazavian Halladay scored on a 1-yard run after Jalin Conyers caught a 27-yard pass between two defenders, then Conyers scored on a wide-open 4-yard pass to put Arizona State up 35-31. DJ Williams answered with a 6-yard score to put Arizona back up and the Wildcats got the ball back on a strip sack of Bourguet with 3:17 left. Arizona State had one last chance after stopping the Wildcats on fourth down, but Isaiah Taylor made a diving interception after Jacob Manu hit Bourguet's arm. A melee between multiple players ensued, but the pick ended Arizona's five-year misery against its biggest rival. - Arizona/AP College Football

  11/13/22 - Jayden de LaurarSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 207 (DS#40 QB) + More +

Jayden de Laura accounted for three touchdowns and had his fifth 300-yard passing game of the season as Arizona upset ninth-ranked UCLA 34-28 Saturday night, snapping an eight-game road losing streak against ranked teams. "That was a big win for the program. It meant a lot," coach Jedd Fisch said after Arizona's first road win over a Top 10 team since it defeated No. 2 Oregon in 2014. "That was a fun game. It was pretty good to hold that team to 28 points. That is one of the top five offenses in college football." Zach Charbonnet rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns for the Bruins (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12), whose chances of making the Pac-12 title game took a big hit. "We ran into a good quarterback. He extended plays like no one we played this year and even since we've been here (in 2018). The plays he made running around were the difference in the game," said UCLA coach Chip Kelly of de Laura's play. de Laura completed 22 of 28 for 315 yards and two TDs.

He also ran in from 3-yards out during the second quarter to give the Wildcats (4-6, 2-5) a 21-14 halftime lead. The sophomore is averaging 340.1 passing yards with 18 touchdowns and a 64.7% completion rate in his last seven games. "We've had close games throughout the year but we didn't finish them. Knowing we were able to close this out is important for the last two games," de Laura said. Michael Wiley ran for 97 yards and scored two touchdowns while Jacob Cowing caught nine passes for 118 yards. The Wildcats were in the lead most of the night but fell behind 28-24 with 10:22 remaining in the fourth quarter when Charbonnet had a 5-yard TD. Arizona responded with an 8-play, 82-yard drive, capped by de Laura's 17-yard pass to Tetairoa McMillan on fourth-and-4 to go back on top 31-28. After UCLA turned the ball over on downs, Tyler Loop extended the lead to six with a 23-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining. The Bruins drove down to the Arizona 29, but Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw three straight incomplete passes. He had Jake Bobo wide open in the end zone on the final play of the game, but Bobo was unable to come up with it after making a diving attempt. Thompson-Robinson was 26 of 40 for 245 yards and a touchdown. - Arizona/AP College Football
