  2022 PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Bret Bushka, Butler,...Bushka, a redshirt junior from Lombard, Illinois, becomes the second Butler athlete to win the league's top offensive honor, joining 2012 recipient Matt Lancaster. He led all PFL athletes with 3,004 offensive yards and 25 touchdowns. While Bushka's 2,377 passing yards ranked second among PFL passers, his 627 rushing yards were eighth among the league's rushers and led all quarterbacks. He led the PFL in pass efficiency (142.17) and completion percentage (64.7) and was tied for the league lead with 20 passing touchdowns.   Brett Bushka threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third, Brody Reder added three rushing scores and Butler rolled to its fourth-straight win, routing Morehead State 56-20 on Saturday. It was the 600th win in Butler history. Joey Suchy, who picked up a career-high 99 yards, opened the scoring with a 21-yard run. Reder had touchdown runs of 10, 3 and 3 yards and Bushka, who scored on a 2-yard keeper, connected with Jared Suchevits for a 43-yard score as the Bulldogs led 42-7 at the half.

Butler (6-2, 4-1 Pioneer Football League) was successful in five trips to the red zone and is now 29 of 30 when inside the opponent's 20. Bushka, who leads the league by completing 67% of his passes, was 8 of 10 for 195 yards. Tyler Adams had three catches for 91 yards and a 36-yard score. Grady Cramer and Carter Cravens combined to go 24 of 42 for 274 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Eagles (2-6, 1-4), who had their string of five-straight games with a blocked punt end. - AP College Football

  Joey Suchy scored three touchdowns, Butler dominated the second half, and the Bulldogs won their homecoming game, defeating Marist 31-10 on Saturday. Suchy had 84 yards rushing on 10 carries, scoring on runs of 12 and 3 yards. He also caught a 16-yard TD pass from Bret Bushka in the fourth quarter. Bushka completed 14 of 23 passes for 159 yards and added 69 yards rushing. Butler (5-2, 3-1 Pioneer Football League) outscored Marist 21-0 after halftime, holding the Red Foxes (2-5, 2-3) to 116 yards in the second half and only four yards in the fourth quarter. Marist's Brock Bagozzi was 23-of-42 passing for 214 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Butler's Luka Zurak, who entered the game as one of four kickers in FCS who has not missed a field goal this season, made his only attempt, a 35-yarder.   OCT 10 PIONEER FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bret Bushka, Butler, (Jr., QB, Lombard, Illinois),...Bushka was responsible for all four touchdowns in Butler's 31-0 PFL victory against Dayton, Saturday. He finished the day completing 25-of-29 passes for three touchdowns with no interceptions (218.25 pass efficiency rating) and added a touchdown on the ground where he had 33 yards on 10 carries, finishing the day with 371 total offensive yards. Bushka led drives of 12-plays for 87 yards, 12 plays for 69 yards, and 12 plays for 80 yards before capping the scoring with a 75-yard touchdown throw to Tyler Adams for the only play of the final scoring drive.   Bret Bushka threw two touchdown passes and ran for the go-ahead score - all in the fourth quarter - and Butler rallied past Valparaiso 26-25 on Saturday. Valparaiso led 19-6 entering the fourth quarter before Bushka's 50-yard pass to Luke Wooten drew the Bulldogs to within 19-13. However, after Valpo's kick returner was taken down at his own 4-yard line and the Beacons lost 3 yards on first down, Aaron Dawson ran 99 yds for a TD and the Valpo lead was 25-13. Bushka brought the Bulldogs right back, throwing to Jared Suchevits for a 4-yard touchdown that left the score 25-19 when the PAT was blocked.

Bushka capped the comeback with a 2-yard run with 1:45 left on the clock. The 30-yard drive was set up by a 30-yard punt from Valpo's Evan Matthes. Lucas Kozlowski intercepted a pass deep in Butler territory to seal the win in the final minute. Bushka completed 24 of 34 passes for 259 yards and led the Bulldogs (4-2, 2-1 Pioneer Football League) in rushing with 69 yards on 18 carries. Dawson finished with 158 yards on 14 carries for Valparaiso (3-3, 2-1).   OCT 10 STATS FCS NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK: Butler (31-0 over Dayton in Pioneer Football League),...The Bulldogs posted their first shutout win since 2010, ended a seven-game losing streak against Dayton and halted the Flyers' NCAA record streak of scoring points in 501 consecutive games. Bret Bushka was 25 of 29 for 338 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for another TD. Kody Leach's end zone interception with 5:40 remaining helped preserve the shutout for first-year coach Mike Uremovich's 3-2 team.   Bret Bushka threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and Butler beat Dayton 31-0 on Saturday, the first time the Flyers had been blanked in 46 years, snapping their 501-game scoring streak. Dayton missed field goal attempts from 44- and 34-yards out in the first half and was stopped on downs twice in the fourth quarter. The last time Dayton was shutout was a 9-0 loss to Marshall on October 16, 1976. The streak broke the 500-game milestone on a 46-3 win over Kentucky State on Sept, 17. The streak was the second longest streak in college football. Division III power house Mount Union's streak began on Nov. 7, 1981 and reached 523 games with a win Saturday.

Luka Zurak connected on a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter to put the Bulldogs up 3-0, and Bushka hit Cameron Heald with the first of two touchdowns midway through the second quarter to send Butler into intermission with a 10-0 lead. Bushka and Heald connected on a 17-yard score in the third quarter and Bushka scored from the 4 to make it 24-0 after three quarters and capped his day with a 75-yard strike to Tyler Adams early in the fourth. Bushka finished 25 of 29 for 338 yards and added 33 yards on 10 carries to lead Butler (3-2, 1-1 Pioneer League). Adams finished with four catches for 149 yards.   Bret Bushka threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score, Adam Sturtz returned an interception 75 yards to the end zone and Butler breezed to a 45-10 victory over NAIA-member Taylor on Saturday. The Bulldogs trailed 7-0 after the Trojans' Brendan Lamb scored on a 10-yard run, but Bushka answered with a 6-yard scoring run to knot the score. Butler (2-0) took the lead for good in the second quarter on a pair of 3-yard TD runs — by Brody Reder and Joey Suchy. The Bulldogs added AJ Deinhart's 26-yard scoring run and Sturtz's pick-6 in the third quarter for a 35-7 lead. Bushka hooked up with Johnny O'Shea for a 12-yard score three seconds into the final period. Bushka completed 14 of 20 passes for 117 yards with one interception. He rushed for 80 yards on 12 carries. Deinhart ran for 85 yards on nine carries. Elijah McCloskey completed just 6 of 15 passes for 68 yards for Taylor.   SEPT 5 PIONEER LEAGUE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bret Bushka, Butler (Jr., QB, Lombard, Illinois),...Bushka led the PFL with four passing touchdowns in the opening week and led Butler to its first season-opening victory since 2018 - a 31-26 win against NAIA foe St. Thomas (Fla.), Saturday. He completed 25-of-35 passes for 309 yards and had 13 carries for 60 yards to lead all PFL quarterbacks with 369 total offensive yards. With Butler trailing 14-3 at halftime, Bushka came alive in the third quarter completing all six of his pass attempts for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns to close the deficit to 20-17. Bushka wasn't done and completed 9-of-11 passes for another 95 yards in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns that gave Butler the lead.   Bret Bushka threw for four scores in the second half and Butler rallied to be beat NAIA-member St. Thomas (Florida) 31-26 in the debut of first-year Bulldogs coach Mike Uremovich on Saturday. Bushka threw touchdowns of 21, 63, 3 and 8 yards to Jeremy Johnson, Tyler Adams, Cameron Heald - and Adams again - respectively. His score to Heald gave Butler the lead for good at 24-20 with 11:52 left. Rontavious Farmer and Damian Heller each scored a touchdown in the first half to put the Bobcats up 14-3 before intermission.

Farmer crashed in from 2 yards out on a two-play drive that lasted only 13 yards which was set up by Caleb Walker's interception of Bushka on the Bulldogs' opening drive. Heller's 8-yard scoring run with 2:15 before halftime came at the end of a 17-play, 92-yard drive that lasted 7:05 for the Bobcats. Uremovich is the 25th coach in Butler history. The 2022 season for St. Thomas marks its fourth year of football while also providing its first-ever senior class. - AP College Football
