 Joko Willis, Auburn, Player News

  08/09/22 - OLB Joko WillisrJr/2025, Auburn, 6-2, 212 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Joko Willis was sandwiched between Derick Hall and edge coach Roc Bellantoni, an arm draped over each one's shoulder and a sly grin on his face. It was early June during a position group dinner at Bellantoni's house, and Willis' presence drew some attention. No, the former junior college linebacker wasn't crashing the party; he was merely bonding with some of his new position mates. After spending his first season at linebacker for Auburn last fall, Willis is shifting into a different role as the Tigers open fall practices Friday. He'll now be working with Auburn's edge defenders in what defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding described as a "hybrid" role within the Tigers' defense.

Schmedding confirmed Willis' new role Thursday on the eve of fall camp in a move that should help alleviate concerns about depth at the edge position this season. The Tigers entered spring with just three scholarship players at edge-seniors Derick Hall and Eku Leota, and redshirt freshman Dylan Brooks, a former four-star prospect who did not see the field last season. Now Auburn enters fall practices with five men in the room, with Willis as well as Western Kentucky transfer Marcus Bragg, who joined the program this summer. "That's one of the top priorities for us, is building dependable depth," Schmedding said. "We talk about not just being on the field but being dependable. That's the consistency that goes along with that communication, doing your job, those type of things. We talk about the time to build trust isn't third-and-1 in the Iron Bowl. That's got to be built from January all the way through." - Birmingham News
