  11/29/23 - QB Riley LeonardSr/2025, Notre Dame, 6-4, 212 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Duke quarterback Riley Leonard entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, signaling his departure from the Blue Devils after two seasons as a starter. Leonard immediately becomes one of - if not the - most talented quarterback available in college football's transfer market. The move comes two days after Duke lost its head coach, Mike Elko, to Texas A&M. Leonard's 2023 season was cut short by ankle and foot injuries, but he helped lead the Blue Devils to a 4-0 start before being hurt on Duke's final offensive play of its 21-14 loss to Notre Dame. He finished this season throwing for 1,102 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in seven games. He also ran for 352 yards and four TDs. Last year, Leonard threw for 2,967 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions and he ran for 699 yards and 13 scores as Duke went 9-4. - AP College Football

Riley Leonard ran for two touchdowns and threw for 173 yards, and Duke wrapped up an impressive first season under Mike Elko with a 30-13 victory over UCF in the Military Bowl on Wednesday. The Blue Devils (9-4) have won four consecutive bowl games, although this was their first appearance in one since 2018. Jordan Moore ran for a touchdown in the first quarter, and then Duke took control in the second. UCF (9-5) lost three of its final four games this season. John Rhys Plumlee managed only 28 yards passing in the first half and 182 for the game. Moore opened the scoring with a 14-yard run, but Isaiah Bowser's 1-yard touchdown run for the Knights tied the game at 7. Duke outscored UCF 13-0 in the second quarter to take control.

After taking the lead on a short field goal, the Blue Devils recovered a fumble by Plumlee at their own 42. They went 58 yards in seven plays, and Leonard scored on 1-yard run. A 48-yard field goal by Todd Pelino made it 20-7 at halftime. Down 23-7, the Knights had a good chance to get back in the game after a profitable exchange of punts gave them the ball at the Duke 32, but UCF turned the ball over on downs. The Knights finally scored again on 2-yard run by Bowser with 9:03 remaining, but a trick play on a 2-point conversion failed badly. Leonard completed the scoring with a 3-yard run with 2:29 to play. He finished with a team-high 63 yards on the ground. Duke went winless in Atlantic Coast Conference play last year, but Elko turned the team around quickly, winning ACC coach of the year honors. The Blue Devils reached nine wins in a season for the seventh time and first since 2014. - Duke/AP College Football

Riley Leonard threw for a career-best 391 yards and four touchdowns and Duke used a late touchdown to close out the regular season with a 34-31 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday. Leonard, who completed 29-of-41 passes, connected with Sahmir Hagans for the game-winning score, a 20-yard reception with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. As a duo, Hagans and Calhoun accounted for 19 receptions and 313 receiving yards. With the win, the Blue Devils (8-4, 5-3 ACC) snapped a three-game losing streak in their series with the Demon Deacons and recorded their first eight-win regular season since 2014.   Riley Leonard threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Duke Blue Devils won their third straight game, topping Virginia Tech 24-7 on Saturday afternoon. Leonard completed 19-of-31 passes for 262 yards and also carried the ball nine times for 48 yards. Jalon Calhoun was Leonard's favorite target, as he hauled in five catches for 94 yards for the Blue Devils (7-3, 4-2 ACC). Grant Wells led the Hokies (2-8, 1-6 ACC) with 177 passing yards and one touchdown.

After Duke opened with a three-and-out, Virginia Tech took the lead on its second offensive play of the game when Wells connected with Da'Wain Lofton on a 53-yard scoring strike. It was the second longest touchdown pass of the year for the Hokies. Then - beginning with a 25-yard field goal from Todd Pelino - the Blue Devils scored 24-straight unanswered points, grabbing the lead and never letting go. The scoring run was highlighted by Jontavis Robertson hauling in a 6-yard pass from Leonard for the junior wideout's first career touchdown. - Duke/AP College Football

Riley Leonard threw for 158 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for 96 yards and another score to help Duke beat short-handed Boston College 38-31 on Friday night. Duke (6-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) became bowl eligible for the first time since 2018 under first-year coach Mike Elko. The Blue Devils notched just three victories last season. Boston College (2-7, 1-5) was without quarterback Phil Jurkovec due to a right knee injury, but freshman Emmett Morehead shined in his first career start, throwing for four touchdowns with no interceptions. Duke forced a three-and-out to begin the second half and Jaquez Moore scored on a 24-yard run to extend its lead to 31-14. Boston College cut its deficit to 10 points but opted for an onside kick with 3:31 left in the third quarter and Duke recovered it before another score by Moore.

Boston College got within 10 points again after a 75-yard drive ended in Morehead's 26-yard pass to fellow freshman Joseph Griffin Jr. with 12:07 remaining. The Eagles added a 34-yard field goal with 17 seconds left, but Duke recovered another onside kick to seal it. Moore finished with 82 yards rushing in his first multi-touchdown game for Duke. Leonard went untouched on a 60-yard touchdown on the sixth play of the game, and his 8-yard scoring pass to Sahmir Hagans made it 24-7. Morehead was 27 of 45 for 330 yards passing for Boston College, which lost its fourth straight game. Joseph Griffin Jr. had 103 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and Zay Flowers added 65 yards and two scores. - Duke/AP College Football

Duke forced Miami into eight turnovers, the most by any team in a Power 5 conference game since 2009, and rolled past the Hurricanes 45-21 on Saturday. Quarterback Riley Leonard ran for three touchdowns and threw for another for Duke (5-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), which scored the game's final 28 points. The Blue Devils gave up two touchdowns in the first 1:54 of the third quarter to lose the lead, but the rest of the way was all Duke. Even worse for Miami, potentially, was this development: quarterback Tyler Van Dyke left in the second quarter with an apparent injury to his shoulder region and did not return. Van Dyke was hit, remained down face-first for a few moments, then walked off flanked by Hurricanes medical personnel as he held his arm to his chest — often a telltale sign of a shoulder issue.

The last team with eight turnovers in a Power 5 conference game was Nebraska, which had that many in a 9-7 loss to Iowa State in 2008. Jake Garcia relieved Van Dyke and went 13 for 21 for 198 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Van Dyke was 11 for 16 for 81 yards and a score before he exited. Colbie Young had two touchdown catches for Miami (3-4, 1-2) and Will Mallory had the other. Duke outgained Miami by only nine yards, 336-327. With the turnovers, it didn't matter. Duke turned the turnovers into 24 points, the last of those coming on Brandon Johnson's 29-yard return for a touchdown with 5:16 left. - Duke/AP College Football

Riley Leonard ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and Duke snapped a 13-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak in beating Virginia 38-17 on Saturday night. Duke (4-1, 1-0 ACC) scored three touchdowns during an 11-minute span of the first half. The Blue Devils didn't win an ACC game last year as part of a conference drought that lasted nearly two full calendar years. Leonard completed 18 of 24 passes for 129 yards and added 59 rushing yards. Jaylen Coleman picked up 97 rushing yards on 19 carries. Brennan Armstrong threw for a touchdown and scrambled for a touchdown for Virginia (2-3, 0-2), which has lost all three road games this season and five in a row dating to last season.

The Blue Devils scored on their first possession of the second half when Leonard ran in from 1 yard out. They stretched the lead to 35-10 on Jaquez Moore's 59-yard run in the first minute of the fourth quarter. In the first half, Leonard's 19-yard pass to Jalon Calhoun opened the scoring. Leonard ran 2 yards and Jordan Waters scored on a 1-yard plunge into the end zone to boost the lead to 21-0 with 10:25 to play in the second quarter. Virginia got on the board with Armstrong's 11-yard pass to Perris Jones with 1:12 to go in the first half. Duke snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series, avenging last year's 48-0 loss. - Duke/AP College Football

Riley Leonard threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as Duke continued its strong start to the season by defeating North Carolina A&T 49-20 on Saturday night. Duke is 3-0 for the first time since 2018. Leonard ended up 11-for-12 passing for 155 yards – all in the first half – to go with a team-high 66 yards rushing on five carries. Leonard completed his first 11 passes before he was intercepted by Avarion Cole on his final throw late in the first half. N.C. A&T (0-3) scored on Andrew Brown field goals of 21 and 41 yards in the first half. The Aggies, who didn't score a touchdown a week earlier at North Dakota State, reached the end zone twice in the fourth quarter on Charlie Dixon's 8-yard run and Eli Brickhandler's 6-yard pass to Romello Kimbrough.

Duke scored three touchdowns in the first 8 1/2 minutes, beginning with the first play from scrimmage when Leonard connected with Nicky Dalmolin for a 38-yard play. The Blue Devils used 10 plays on their second possession, ending with Jordan Moore making a diving catch for a 4-yard touchdown. Duke's defense produced the next points when DeWayne Carter grabbed a fumble and ran 35 yards untouched for the score. In the second half, Leonard ran 56 yards for the first points. Jaylen Coleman (12 yards) and Eric Weatherly (14 yards) also scored on runs for the Blue Devils. The teams have met three times in a four-season span, with Duke winning convincingly each time. - Duke/AP College Football

Riley Leonard threw for two touchdowns and completed his first 15 passes of the season, boosting Duke to a 30-0 victory over Temple as coach Mike Elko won in his debut Friday night. Duke recorded its first shutout of a Football Bowl Subdivision team since 1989 at North Carolina. Leonard, a sophomore, completed 24 of 30 passes for 328 yards. He also was the top rusher in the game with 64 yards on 11 carries. Elko was in his first game as a head coach after replacing David Cutcliffe, who spent 14 seasons in charge of the Blue Devils. Duke is coming off three consecutive losing seasons with a combined 10-25 record during that stretch.

It was a disappointing opening game for first-year Temple coach Stan Drayton, who had been the associate head coach at Texas. Temple was held to 179 yards of total offense, with just 50 in the first half compared to Duke's 337 by halftime. Duke scored five plays into the game on Jaylen Coleman's 1-yard run. Moore threw touchdown passes of 4 yards to Jordan Moore and 39 yards to Sahmir Hagans in the first half. Moore was the game's second-leading receiver with 77 yards on six catches. He competed with Leonard for the starting quarterback role in the preseason and is listed as the backup quarterback. - Duke/AP College Football

Three practices into the first preseason of his Duke tenure, Mike Elko isn't any closer to - publicly or privately - naming the Blue Devils' starting quarterback. Elko said Friday, sophomores Riley Leonard and Jordan Moore must both factor into game plans no matter who gets the start against Temple. "I think in the modern world of college football, the way the speed of the game is nowadays, we're worried about getting our third quarterback ready," Elko said. "As much as we're worried about getting one and two, we're also worried about three because that's how seasons go sometimes." Leonard started one game as a freshman last season when Gunner Holmberg, who has since transferred to Florida International, was injured. Moore has no starts but played in 10 games last season for former coach David Cutcliffe. - Rock Hill Herald
