By the time Nov. 20 rolled around, it had been more than two years since Christian Veilleux played in a competitive football game. Veilleux, who last played in 2019 as a high school junior, could feel the gravity of the moment. "It was a little crazy," V eilleux said Wednesday. "I was nervous at first. Then once the nerves left, I remember being back there and being like, it's back to high school days. I'm just playing high school ball...It took about a drive to get the shock out. Then after that I felt like I was back. It really didn't feel like it was two years from when I (last played)." Soon enough, the nerves faded and Veilleux was back in his element.He would go on to complete 15 of his 24 pass attempts for 235 yards and three touchdowns on his way to leading Penn State football to a 28-0 victory over Rutgers. That game, this spring and soon this fall could be the first glimpse into the Nittany Lions' offensive future - one led by Veilleux and a young crop of offensive weapons. The redshir t freshman quarterback has been a forgotten player of sorts since the season ended. In front of him on the depth chart is Sean Clifford - a redshirt senior who is entering his sixth year with the program and his fourth as a starter. Behind him is Drew Al lar - a former five-star recruit who finished the cycle as the No. 1 quarterback in the country according to some rankings. Veilleux is stuck between them, a bridge between the present and the future that is often overlooked by some who would like to con nect the end of the Clifford era to the beginning of the Allar era. - Centre Times

Christian Veilleux used the biggest opportunity of his young college career to make up for a lost time on Saturday. Penn State's freshman quarterback, who was out of football a year ago when his high school canceled the season due to the coronavirus pand emic, stepped in for an ailing Sean Clifford and shook off the rust. Veilleux sparked what had been a lifeless Penn State offense with three touchdowns in a 28-0 win over Rutgers on Saturday. Veilleux was not available for comment after the game as Penn State does not allow freshmen to speak to reporters. "We faced as much adversity in this game as I've been around," Penn State coach James Franklin said. Jahan Dotson, Parker Washington and Malick Meiga caught touchdown passes and Keyvone Lee ran for a s core for the Nittany Lions who snapped a two-game skid at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions (7-4, 4-4 Big Ten) did so with 35 players battling flu-like symptoms through the week and up to kickoff. Clifford, who left the game midway through the fir st quarter, was among them. The three-year starter missed warm-ups as he was receiving fluids in the locker room. Afterward, Clifford told Franklin he felt like he could play. It didn't last. Clifford was just 2-for-8 passing with 23 yards before he retu rned to the locker room for more treatment. Although he had never played a collegiate down and took a while to find his rhythm, Veilleux settled in and the rest of Penn State's offense did enough in the second half to beat the Scarlet Knights (5-6, 2-6) for the 15th straight time. - Penn State/AP College Football
