As he often does, Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin spoke in NFL terms when he broke down his two quarterback additions out of the transfer portal. Spencer Sanders, a four-year starter at Oklahoma State, is the veteran. Walker Howard, a top-five quarterback in last year's recruiting class from LSU, is the draft pick. "I'm very excited about the quarterback room," Kiffin said Wednesday. "I was very concerned about it from pure numbers, you guys can figure that out. My job is to put together the best roster every year. And you know, we had a chance to bring those two guys in."

Kiffin was asked if there would be a quarterback competition between Sanders, Walker and returning starter Jaxson Dart and did not provide a straight answer. He did, however, explain that he was pleased with Dart's progress as the season went on. Dart finished the season with a 62.4% completion rate, 2,974 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. "I think Jaxson did a lot of great things last year," Kiffin said. "I know Jaxson, when he initially played versus the middle and end, dramatically improved for a young quarterback. We're very excited about continuing that." - The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin says he has informed school officials he will be staying at Ole Miss, putting an end to speculation that he was the leading candidate to fill the head coaching vacancy at Auburn. "Same as I said last week: I'm staying here and we have a lot of work left to do," Kiffin told The Associated Press on Saturday in a voice message. Kiffin added he has not signed a contract extension with the school. The 47-year-old Kiffin is 23-12 in three seasons as Rebels coach. No. 20 Mississippi finished its regular season 8-4, losing four of its last five, including Thursday's 24-22 loss to Mississippi State. Auburn was playing Saturday at No. 8 Alabama in the Iron Bowl, and its coaching search figured to heat up soon after its season concluded. Auburn fired coach Bryan Harsin earlier this month and has gone 2-1 since under interim coach Carnell Williams, the former star running back for the Tigers. - AP College Football

Jaxson Dart is warming up to the idea of being a running quarterback. Dart ran for 115 yards, one of three Mississippi 100-yard rushers, and the ninth-ranked Rebels rolled up 448 on the ground in a 48-34 victory over Auburn Saturday. It was the first time since 1976 the Rebels had three 100-yard rushers in a game. "You don't get that every week," Dart said. "I think the best thing was just about every play you could feel Auburn wearing down more and more." Ole Miss (3-0 Southeastern Conference) is 7-0 for just the second time since 1962 and first time since 2014. The Rebels raced to a 21-0 lead and never trailed, although Auburn (3-4, 1-3) pulled as close as 28-24 in the third quarter.

Quinshon Judkins had 139 yards on 25 carries and scored on a 41-yard run with 6:26 remaining to build the final margin. "The defense wasn't up to our standards. But we had to stop them from running and it was good to see us finish," Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said. Dart, the Southern California transfer, finished 9 of 19 for 130 yards with three touchdown passes and ran for 115 on 14 carries. It was his second 100-yard rushing game of the season. He had only 43 yards rushing in six games last season at USC. Zach Evans had 136 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. Tank Bigsby led Auburn with 179 yards on 20 carries with touchdown runs of 2 and 50 yards. The Tigers had 301 yards rushing, but three turnovers. Robby Ashford scored on runs of 2 and 11 yards and finished 8 of 17 passing for 140 yards. - Mississippi/AP College Football

Jaxson Dart threw for a career-high 448 yards and three touchdowns, and ninth-ranked Mississippi rallied from a 10-point deficit Saturday in routing Vanderbilt 52-28 for its first 6-0 start since 2014. The Rebels (6-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) won their fourth straight in the series after trailing 20-10 in the second quarter. Quinshon Judkins ran for the first of his two TDs just before halftime, then the Rebels added three more in the third quarter as part of 35 straight points. Senior Jonathan Mingo caught nine passes for a career-high and national season-high 247 yards and two TDs, the last a short pass he caught at the line of scrimmage and took 71 yards to the end zone. The Rebels padded the lead with a 1-yard TD run by Matt Jones with 18 seconds left for the final margin.

Vanderbilt (3-3, 0-2) lost its 23rd consecutive SEC game and 10th straight for second-year coach Clark Lea. The Commodores scored 13 straight points to go up 20-10 before being shut out after halftime. De'Rickey Wright intercepted two passes for Vandy. Lea went for the touchdown instead of a field goal on fourth-and-3 at the Ole Miss 5, and Ray Davis capped Vanderbilt's longest drive this season with a 5-yard TD run up the middle with 1:32 left in the first half. The Commodores ran 15 plays and chewed 8:54 off the clock for a 20-10 lead. Then Dart hit Mingo with a 48-yard pass down to the Vandy 3, and Quinshon Judkins scored two plays later from 2 yards out to pull Ole Miss within 20-17 at halftime. Ole Miss simply dominated the third quarter, outgaining Vandy 217-31 on offense and outscoring them 21-0. - Mississippi/AP College Football

Jaxson Dart and Quinshon Judkins accounted for four touchdowns in the second quarter as No. 16 Mississippi rallied from an early deficit to beat Tulsa 35-27 on Saturday. Ole Miss (4-0) trailed for the first time this season, 14-7 before the decisive 28-point outburst. Dart threw 31-yard touchdown passes to Malik Heath and Jonathan Mingo, and Judkins had scoring runs of 1 and 4 yards to complete the rally and build a 35-14 cushion.

Dart directed consecutive scoring drives of 75, 64, 93 and 46 yards in the quarter and finished 13 of 24 passing with 154 yards, adding 116 yards rushing on 13 carries. The Rebels had 462 yards of total offense, highlighted by 140 yards rushing on 27 carries by Judkins. Tulsa (2-2) was led by Davis Brin, throwing for a 20-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Epps and adding a 1-yard touchdown run. Brin was 7 of 13 passing for 112 yards before exiting with an injury in the second quarter. However, he remained on the sideline in uniform in the second half. Braylon Braxton replaced Brin to finish 9 of 22 passing for 83 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Epps to pull Tulsa to 35-27 in the fourth quarter. The Golden Hurricane, despite 457 yards of total offense, did not cross midfield on their final three possessions. - Mississippi/AP College Football

No. 20 Ole Miss shrugged off its uncertainty at quarterback by running right through Georgia Tech, with Zach Evans and Quinshon Judkins leading a 316-yard pummeling on the ground that carried the Rebels to a 42-0 victory Saturday. Jaxson Dart returned as the starting quarterback after Luke Altmyer got the nod the previous week. It really didn't matter who was taking the snaps. Not the way Ole Miss (3-0) was running the ball. The game plan was apparent from the very first possession. On third-and-7 from the Georgia Tech 17, Judkins ran for the first down. The freshman then rumbled to the end zone on third-and-goal from the 7.

Ole Miss ran for all six of its touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards on a staggering 62 carries. Evans had scoring runs of 3 and 26 yards while rushing for 134 yards. Judkins gained 98 yards and also scored twice. Ulysses Bentley added two more TD runs as the Rebels really poured it on the third quarter, doubling their 21-0 halftime lead. The Ole Miss defense wasn't too shabby, either. The Rebels held Georgia Tech to 214 yards total offense while sacking Jeff Sims seven times. They have allowed just 13 points on the season, albeit against less-than-stellar opposition. Dart completed 10 of 16 passes for 207 yards with an interception, doing some of his best work on the ground. He rushed for 40 yards and pretty much delivered the exclamation point to this beatdown by lowering his shoulder to send safety Jaylon King flying at the end of a run late in the third. - Mississippi/AP College Football

Southern California transfer Jaxson Dart directed three consecutive touchdown drives in the first half to help No. 21 Mississippi beat Troy 28-10 on Saturday in the opener for both teams. Ole Miss built a 21-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes on drives of 82, 68 and 83 yards and was never seriously threatened. Dart was 18 of 27 for 154 yards, with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Malik Heath to cap the opening series of the second half. Transfer Zach Evans rushed for 130 yards on 20 carries as Ole Miss finished with 433 yards of total offense. The Rebels scored on 2-yard runs in the first half by Ulysses Bentley IV, Jonathan Mingo and Quinshon Judkins. Jon Sumrall lost in coaching debut for Troy. Gunnar Watson threw for 275 yards for Troy, completing 34 of 47, with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Rajae' Johnson in the final quarter. - Mississippi/AP College Football

Ole Miss football began preseason practices on Wednesday with a quarterback-battle-sized question mark hanging above it. Rebels coach Lane Kiffin said he's not ready to make a decision between sophomores Luke Altmyer and Jaxson Dart after one day of practices. He wants to make a decision before the season opener and, given his experience in coaching, wants to stick with one instead of letting Altmyer and Dart battle things out in a game. "We're always going to look at everything and what's best for the team and not do things because we've done them before," Kiffin said. "But I think people pull (quarterbacks) too fast. It's not like a pitcher who goes in and then pitches four days later (after being pulled). There's a lot of mental stuff to playing quarterback. When you get pulled, that's a big deal. You've got to make sure he's had every opportunity and that what's happening is actually his fault."

Kiffin continued that he thinks it's important to differentiate between a quarterback who's making unforced errors and a quarterback who's struggling because the team around him is struggling. He said he's not the kind of coach who will yank a quarterback for throwing two or three interceptions because he knows oftentimes quarterback mistakes happen because of protection or route running errors or unlucky bounces that benefit the defense. Dart and Altmyer are considered the two favorites to replace quarterback Matt Corral, who started for the last two years for the Rebels before being picked in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. - The Clarion Ledger

Last year's Ole Miss football team was one of the best in program history. But that was last year. The 10 wins, the Sugar Bowl berth, the epic highlights and the mustard bottle are as much the past as Johnny Vaught, Archie Manning, Deuce McAllister and the goal posts being paraded around The Square. Expectations for the 2022 Rebels are all over the place. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has to replace 94% of the passing yards, 97% of the rushing yards, 78% of the receiving yards, 55% of the tackles and 63% of the tackles for loss and sacks from last year's team.

Sounds like 100 percent confusion. But the Rebels signed 13 of the top-200 transfer portal prospects per 247Sports' rankings, including four of the top 50. . Kiffin's strength is tailoring offenses to his players' talents. Quarterbacks Jaxson Dart and Luke Altmyer won't have to be Matt Corral so much as they'll have to be the best versions of themselves. - The Clarion Ledger

Quarterbacks across college football hit the transfer portal harder than anyone this offseason, with big names across the country finding new homes. On3's J.D. PicKell decided to name his top five transfer portal quarterbacks recently on an episode of "The Hard Count with J.D. PicKell," and Ole Miss Rebels' signal-caller Jaxson Dart checks in at the No. 3 spot in the countdown. Dart was one of the most celebrated high school quarterbacks in America coming out of high school. According to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2021 cycle, the Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) product was ranked as the No. 7 quarterback prospect in America.

While he was at USC last year in his freshman year, he flashed that same mesmerizing ability, but also showed the propensity to make too many high-risk throws-tossing five interceptions. After the Trojans brought in Lincoln Riley and Caleb Williams to be their trigger man in the offseason, Dart hit the transfer portal and ended up at Ole Miss. Dart struggled mightily in the Ole Miss spring game behind their second-string offensive line, throwing two interceptions, one of which was a horrible pick six. - On3.com

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings - No. 3. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss (from USC). The former 5-star recruit had a tough spring operating Lane Kiffin's offense, throwing multiple interceptions in the Grove Bowl. While Luke Altmyer enters the offseason with a slight lead in the battle, it would be surprising if Dart didn't receive a real look at some point early this fall. He's that talented. He must cut down on all the risky throws, but if it all clicks, the USC transfer could put monster numbers throwing to an impressive collection of Rebels playmakers including the recently-added Jaylon Robinson. - On3.com

Jaxson Dart was so focused on competing, he forgot to do the things that would've helped him compete. Saturday's Grove Bowl was not a banner day for Ole Miss football's quarterbacks competing for the starting job. Dart and sophomore Luke Altmyer combined to complete 20 of 52 pass attempts (38.5%) for 348 yards. Dart threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns to go along with two first half interceptions. Altmyer ran for two touchdowns against a defense that wasn't allowed to touch him.

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said he thought Altmyer was in more control and Dart's focus might've been in the wrong place. "I thought he was trying to win the job instead of just playing quarterback," Kiffin said. "He was forcing balls and not being very consistent. In the second half he ended up calming down and taking it one play at a time and ended up making some plays." When Dart was bad, he was atrocious. His first interception happened because he overthrew tight end Michael Trigg over the middle and put the ball right in safety Derek Bermudez's belly. Then Dart sprinted upfield to try to make a tackle, lowered his shoulder straight into linebacker Troy Brown and ended up getting leveled. His other interception came because he threw a ball straight to cornerback Tysheem Johnson without a receiver within five yards. Johnson returned the pass 73 yards for a touchdown. - The Clarion Ledger

The quarterback competition at Southern California might be over before it even started. Jaxson Dart did not practice Tuesday after the freshman sustained a knee injury in the Trojans' 45-14 win at Washington State, while three-year starter Kedon Slovis took first-team reps after being knocked out of the game because of a neck injury. Interim coach Donte Williams would not discuss the status of Dart, who came off the bench to throw for 391 yards and four touchdowns. That included whether Dart needed an MRI or other tests. "Shoot, I hope he's here tomorrow, so we'll see. I know he just wasn't here today," Williams said. Williams had indicated there would be an open competition following Dart's debut in which he rallied USC to victory in its first game since Clay Helton was fired as coach last Monday. Dart was named the Pac-12 offensive player and freshman of the week after going 30 of 46 passing, though he was intercepted twice, and rushing for a team-high 32 yards. Williams said Dart would need to practice this week in order to have a chance to start for USC (2-1, 1-1 Pac-12) against Oregon State on Saturday. - AP College Football

SEPT 20 PAC-12 OFFENSE & FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Jaxson Dart, Fr., QB, USC (Kaysville, UT),...3rd player to win both Offense & Freshman in award in same week since the Freshman award began in 2019. Arizona State QB Jayden Daniels won it in November 2019 and USC QB Kedon Slovis won it in September 2019 in his first career start...When starting QB Kedon Slovis was knocked out of the game on the opening series, true freshman backup Jaxson Dart came in and had a historic first-time performance under adverse circumstances. After seeing USC fall behind late in the first half, 14-0, in the rain and playing under an interim head coach, Dart rallied the Trojans to a 45-14 win.

Threw for 391 yards-the most ever by a Trojan in his debut--on 30-of-46 passing (65.2%) with 4 TDs. Its the 3rd most by a Pac-12 QB in their debut since at least 1997...Also led USC in rushing with 32 yards on 6 carries, the first Trojan quarterback to do so since Matt Barkley in 2010 versus Stanford...His first TD toss was a 38-yarder on fourth-and-9 with 32 seconds left in the second quarter to get USC finally on the board, and he did so while hobbling on a knee he bruised while rushing...3 of his 4 TDs were 30-plus yards...Also nominated for offense: Jalen McMillan, WR, Washington; Kyle Phillips, WR, UCLA; Travis Dye, RB, Oregon; Chase Garbers, QB, California; Rachaad White, RB, Arizona State; Tanner McKee, QB, Stanford; Chance Nolan, QB, Oregon State...Also nominated for freshman: Jalen McMillan, WR, Washington; Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon; Andrew Edson, Edge, Washington State; Jimmy Wyrick, Safety, Stanford; Omarr Norman-Lott, DL, Arizona State; Easton Mascarenas, ILB, Oregon State. - Pac-12 Football

Freshman quarterback Jaxson Dart came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes as Southern California rebounded from last weekend's tough loss to Stanford, and the subsequent firing of coach Clay Helton, with a 45-14 victory over Washington State on Saturday. Dart replaced an injured Kedon Slovis on the second series of the game. He completed 30 of 46 passes for 391 yards, with two interceptions, as Southern California (2-1, 1-1 Pac-12) won in its first game under interim coach Donte Williams, the first Black head coach in program history. "I'm super fortunate to be around a group of guys and coaches who show a ton of resiliency and confidence in one another," Dart said. "And like coach said, our main goal, and we're going to face some adversity, but we have to go 1-0, and win that moment." Dart was surprised to find himself playing early in the game. "I think those moments always hit you when you are least expecting it," Dart said. "It was the first drive and we were just starting to get something going and I was just super excited, even though I felt terrible for Kedon." Drake London caught 13 passes for 170 yards for the Trojans. - Southern California/AP College Football

Just one year ago, Jaxson Dart was barely a blip on USC's radar. The young Utah quarterback had no Power Five offers. His profile didn't even appear on all the major recruiting sites. It would take a senior-season transfer, a pandemic-altered high school campaign, and a meteoric rise to Gatorade national player of the year for Dart to arrive at this moment, with coach Clay Helton making official Thursday what so many around USC had expected since the freshman's standout spring. Dart will be USC's backup quarterback behind Kedon Slovis this season, while Miller Moss, a fellow four-star freshman, will occupy the No. 3 spot.

Slovis remains the unquestioned starter under center. The significance of the selection at backup quarterback extends beyond this season, with Dart now presumed to be at the center of USC's future plans at the position and Moss - for now, at least - on the outside looking in. Dart has certainly looked the part of heir apparent since his arrival in April. As the competition between the two freshmen played out through August, Helton said Dart rose to the occasion during live repetitions and scrimmage situations. - Los Angeles Times
