Oregon State quarterback Chance Nolan, who started the Beavers' first five games before heading to the sideline with a neck injury, has put his name in the transfer portal. Nolan, a fifth-year junior, started 17 consecutive games, including the final 12 of the 2021 season. Late in the first quarter against Utah on Oct. 1, Nolan was tackled when running the ball and left the game. It was later announced as a neck strain. Third-year freshman Ben Gulbranson has started OSU's last seven games. He is 6-1 as the Beavers' starting quarterback.

Nolan completed 66 of 111 passes for 939 yards and eight touchdowns this season. During his three-year OSU career, the former JC transfer completed 316 of 520 passes for 4,153 yards. Oregon State is losing senior quarterback Tristan Gebbia from its roster in addition to Nolan. Expected to return next season are Gulbranson and freshmen Travis Throckmorton and Dom Montiel. High school senior Aidan Chiles, a 4-star quarterback prospect, made a verbal commitment to OSU and is expected to sign later in December. - The Oregonian

Chance Nolan threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns and Oregon State remained undefeated with a 68-28 victory over Montana State at Portland's Providence Park on Saturday night. Anthony Gould caught a pair of touchdown passes and returned a punt for another score for the Beavers, who are 3-0 to open the season for the first time since 2014. Providence Park is normally home to Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers and the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League. Oregon State hadn't played in Portland since 1986. Montana State is using a two-quarterback system this season, with Tommy Mellott and Wyoming transfer Sean Chambers. Mellott threw for 101 yards with three interceptions, while running for 135 yards. Chambers ran for 35 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bobcats (2-1) - who haven't defeated an FBS team since 2006, when they beat current Pac-12 member Colorado 19-10 - were coming off a 63-13 victory over Morehead State in Bozeman. Deshawn Fenwick gave the Beavers the early lead with a 25-yard scoring run up the middle. Montana State answered with Chambers' 7-yard keeper on the Bobcats' first series of the game. Nolan hit Tre'Shaun Harrison with a 6-yard scoring pass to give the Beavers a 14-7 lead. Mellott was intercepted on Montana State's subsequent drive and Oregon State took advantage, scoring on Nolan's 1-yard keeper. But Marqui Johnson scored for the Bobcats on a 98-yard kickoff return to close the gap to 21-14. Silas Bolden scored for the Beavers on a 24-yard pass from Nolan midway though the second quarter. Nolan added a 9-yard scoring pass to Gould to make it 34-14 going into halftime. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Chance Nolan passed for two touchdowns and Oregon State's defense forced five turnovers in a season-opening 34-17 victory over Boise State on Saturday. The Beavers, who are hoping to build on last season's first bowl-game appearance since 2013, took control early behind their opportunistic defense and a few big plays offensively. Oregon State snapped its six-game losing streak in season openers. Boise State received a lift off the bench from backup quarterback Taylen Green, who replaced an ineffective Hank Bachmeier and sparked a second-half comeback. Bachmeier, a fourth-year starter, was pulled in the second quarter and did not return after tossing two interceptions and losing a fumble. He did not play in the second half.

Green showed promise, especially as a runner with 102 yards on the ground. His 74-yard touchdown gallop late in the third quarter cut Oregon State's lead to 27-10. He also scored on a 4-yard keeper early in the fourth quarter that brought Boise State within 27-17. With the Beavers' offense in neutral, short-yardage specialist Jack Colletto broke loose up the middle on a third-and-2 play for a 41-yard touchdown with 10:39 remaining to provide the final margin of victory. The Beavers opened the scoring on tight end Luke Musgrave's 26-yard touchdown catch, which followed Bachmeier's second interception of the first quarter. After a three-and-out by Boise State, Nolan hit Tyjon Lindsey for a 47-yard touchdown, giving Oregon State a 14-0 lead at 1:15 of the first quarter. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Coach Jonathan Smith has yet to publicly declare who will start at quarterback for OSU in the Sept. 3 Boise State opener. An announcement may not come until the middle of next week, or perhaps even Monday of game week. But barring an injury or something unforeseen, Nolan is Oregon State's starting quarterback. He's getting more than 80 percent of the reps with the No. 1 offensive unit in practice. From viewing practice and hearing what others think, Nolan - who started 12 games last season - is improved. There remains a battle in camp at quarterback, but it's for No. 2 between Ben Gulbranson and Tristan Gebbia. The view from here is Gulbranson has the edge, but there's time for Gebbia to make an impression. - The Oregonian

It's rapidly becoming a thing in college football. Be a quarterback, get a name, image and likeness deal. Not for all, but the list of quarterbacks landing significant opportunities, some into high seven-figure range, are growing. Even in the Pac-12, there's USC quarterback Caleb Williams with reports of NIL partnerships worth $2.4 million. Washington State's NIL collective put together a deal worth $90,000 for Cameron Ward when he transferred. Others in the conference are cashing in or on the verge.

Oregon State quarterback Chance Nolan? Since partnering with a marketing agency about nine months ago, Nolan says he has a small clothing line and a deal with a memorabilia company. "Nothing really too much," Nolan said. Nolan is aware of NIL quarterback deals, but it doesn't faze him. "I try not to look at that stuff, man. I'm more for my teammates," Nolan said. "I've never been somebody who's made it about myself. Seeing that stuff, that's great for those guys. But I'm here. I'm loyal to this team, I'm loyal to Oregon State. I just want to play football and get to the next level." That's not to say quarterbacks who land lucrative NIL deals aren't "team" players. In this era, it's possible to be loyal to the school, and still make endorsement money. Nolan's answer is simple: win games. "If we're 3-0 and beat USC, things can change," Nolan said. "That's kind of what we're focused on. You win, and that stuff comes with winning." - The Oregonian

Oregon State redshirt junior quarterback Chance Nolan (6-3, 210) returns after starting 12 games last season, hitting on 204 of 318 passes for 2,677 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Coach Jonathan Smith believes Nolan gained the experience to continue the Beavers' improvement this year. OSU won five of its first seven games last yearand earned a bowl bid for the first time since 2013. The Beavers lost to Utah State, 24-13 in the LA Bowl and finished the season 7-6. "What I love about Chance is how competitive he is and I think he displays that in his style of play, being competitive in the pocket but also extending the play and getting some extra yards, getting first downs," Smith said. "He did have a lot of good games for us. I thought he improved from his first year to this last year and right now he's heading into year three. We're counting on him taking that next step into being a three-year starting quarterback because he's got a skill set of throwing the ball, athletic, competitive." - Gazette Times

Chance Nolan passed for 257 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for a score, leading Oregon State to a 35-14 win over Stanford on Saturday. The victory makes Oregon State (6-4, 4-3 Pac-12) bowl eligible for the first time since 2013, and snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Cardinal. "It's been a long time coming, man," Oregon State senior linebacker Andrzej Hughes-Murray said of becoming bowl eligible. "I'm happy for my guys and happy for coach (Jonathan) Smith. And happy for myself, too." Smith, who was hired in 2018 to coach at his alma mater, inherited a team that was coming off a 1-11 season. "There's no question this is big," said Smith, who was the starting quarterback during Oregon State's 2000 Fiesta Bowl season. "(Win) number six is big. I'm not going to dance around that. We've got a couple more games that can mean a whole lot." Nolan completed 19 of 25 passes, including a 67-yard touchdown to Trevon Bradford that increased the lead to 21-0 early in the third quarter.

Injuries have taken a toll on Stanford (3-7, 2-6), which has lost five games in a row for the first time under coach David Shaw. Freshman Ari Patu struggled to get the Cardinal's passing game going in his first career start, completing 7 of 14 for 51 yards with a touchdown and interception before leaving midway through the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. Stanford used three quarterbacks in the game. "Better fight from our guys this week," said Shaw, whose team was coming off a 52-7 loss to Utah. "We're not just looking for better, we're trying to win." Oregon State's defense made strides after giving up a total of 76 points in its previous two games, losses at California and Colorado. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Chance Nolan threw four touchdown passes and Oregon State beat Southern California 45-27 on Saturday night. Tyjon Lindsey had five receptions for 102 yards and two touchdowns, B.J. Baylor ran for 158 yards and the Beavers (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) ended a 24-game losing streak - dating to 1960 - at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It was their fourth win in 49 road games (4-42-3) in the series. "I just love the feeling of getting a big team win. It doesn't matter what I did, it matters what we all did, and I was just a small part of it," Lindsey said. "The praise goes to the team. It's a team effort, and I love the way we handled business here. It looked like a complete team to me." Kedon Slovis threw for 355 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions as the Trojans (2-2, 1-2) lost their second straight home game as double-digit favorites.

It was the first home game for interim coach Donte Williams, who replaced Clay Helton two days after a 42-28 loss to Stanford on Sept. 11. "Well, tonight just wasn't our night," Williams said. "Oregon State, tonight they outcoached us, they outplayed us, and it will all get fixed. I promise you that." Oregon State used a dominant run game and Nolan's precise passing to methodically wear down USC, scoring touchdowns on five straight drives starting in the second quarter. That included consecutive 92-yard marches, the latter capped by Tre'Shaun Harrison's 36-yard scoring grab with 44 seconds left in the first half that put the Beavers up for good. Nolan was 15-of-19 passing for 213 yards, though he did throw his first two interceptions of the season, and added 57 yards rushing. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Oregon State took care of business Saturday against FCS opponent Idaho, dominating from the outset in a 42-0 victory. Chance Nolan passed for three touchdowns and B.J. Baylor ran for two scores as the Beavers (2-1) amassed 438 total yards and were stout defensively. Oregon State led 28-0 at halftime and was not challenged by the Vandals (1-2), who have lost 17 of the past 18 matchups against the Beavers dating back to 1953. It was Oregon State's first shutout since a 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh in the 2008 Sun Bowl.

Idaho was limited to 192 total yards and didn't get inside the Beavers' 20-yard line until late in the third quarter after an interception of OSU backup quarterback Sam Noyer. Wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey, who missed last week's game against Hawaii with an ankle injury, got the Beavers on the board midway through the first quarter with an 18-yard touchdown catch. Baylor's 4-yard TD run increased the lead to 14-0 late in the first quarter. Deshaun Fenwick's 9-yard scamper gave the Beavers a 21-0 advantage at 11:05 of the second quarter. Nolan's 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Teagan Quitoriano late in the first half gave Oregon State a 28-0 lead at the break. It was more of the same in the second half. - Oregon State/AP College Football

Chance Nolan passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns, and B.J. Baylor ran for a career-high 171 yards and three scores to lead Oregon State to a 45-27 victory over Hawaii on Saturday night. Nolan replaced starter Sam Noyer late in the third quarter of the Beavers' season-opening loss at Purdue last week and provided a spark. Coach Jonathan Smith opted to stay with the hot hand against Hawaii (1-2, 0-0 Mountain West). Good decision.

Nolan completed his first 13 passes as the Beavers (1-1) took a 24-7 halftime lead at the break. He finished 21 of 29 and also ran for 38 yards. "I did think he was sharp," Smith said. "We're going with stuff he's really comfortable with and it showed up. He came out really effective." Nolan, who started the last three games last season after an injury to Tristan Gebbia, learned Thursday that he would be in the starting lineup. If Saturday's performance was indicative, he could become a fixture as OSU's starting signal caller. "In our position you've got to prepare like you're gonna go in no matter what," Nolan said. "You never know what's gonna happen." - Oregon State/AP College Football

During his debut season with the Oregon State football program, Chance Nolan flashed dazzling athleticism and looked like he could be the Beavers' long-term answer at quarterback. But he also faced the ups and downs that most young signal callers do in the Pac-12, and struggled at times with the speed and physicality of the game. So in the three-and-a-half months since Oregon State's 2020 season finale, Nolan has worked to adapt his game from both a physical and mechanical standpoint. With one day of spring practice in the books, he and Oregon State's coaching staff are happy with the early return. "I thought he did a pretty good job in the weight room," offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren said. "Our strength guys really had the last three months with him, and he added a little bit of weight and strength. He had a little bit more zip on the ball today. In terms of durability, I think this will help him moving forward this season."

Nolan will enter the spring with a leg up in the starting quarterback competition, as last year's Week 1 starter, Tristan Gebbia, is still sidelined with a knee injury. With Gebbia out, that leaves Nolan, freshman Ben Gulbranson and incoming freshman Sam Vidlak as the only three active quarterbacks at the moment. All three had nice moments during the 7-on-7 portions of Tuesday's practice, and Lindgren pointed out that the lack of current depth under center could be a blessing in disguise. - Gazette Times
